...to do a wash on Christmas Day?

We have 3 under 3 and the washing is mad. Not to mention we’re hosting 4 adults and 3 more children over Christmas. I’ll stick a load on in the morning and another in the evening probably. DSis says we should just forget it and catch up the day after.

Will you have the washing machine on on Christmas Day?

Genuinely shocked at washing being done every day. No wonder the planet is doomed.

And yes I've got kids and family.

BarkandCheese · 22/12/2019 08:50

If this was Mumsnet in 1919 and doing the laundry was an all day affair involving boiling water in giant tubs, wash boards and soda flakes then I’d say give yourself a day off. As it’s 2019 and doing laundry is put dirty clothes and detergent into machine and switch on just do it.

Singlebutmarried · 22/12/2019 08:54

@bagelbaby as a family we generate at least 8 loads of washing a week, if I didn’t wash daily, at least once, then it would just build up and up.

Juanbablo · 22/12/2019 08:58

I probably will. Our washing situation is out of control. We have so much! There's 5 of us in the house. If we slack on the washing it builds up so fast so I try and stay on top of it.

DickDewy · 22/12/2019 09:20

If the washing machine was in the kitchen, I wouldn’t do any.

LynetteScavo · 22/12/2019 09:41

With three small children you're always going to be having to stick something in the wash. If your house is tiny and you eat in the kitchen best not stick it on during Christmas lunch. If you have a utility room noI'm no problem.

This is one if those situations where we all just have to use our common sense.

Elbeagle · 22/12/2019 10:22

bagelbaby I wish I didn’t have to wash so often. However my 3 DC are 6, 4 and 11 months. School uniforms need washing every day as they are genuinely filthy at the end of the day. 11 month old obviously needs his clothes washing every day. So that’s already 3 full outfits. They wear pyjamas for a couple of nights.
DH’s work shirt, boxers and socks need washing daily of course. I wear jeans more than once but I have to wash anything that comes in contact with my underarms every day as breast feeding makes me sweaty. That’s easily a load a day. If I could reduce it I would.

inwood · 22/12/2019 10:23

I can't even imagine thinking about it ahead. If it needs to be done I'll chuck it in but that's as much headspace as I'll give it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/12/2019 10:51

I do fuck all on xmas day

NoSauce · 22/12/2019 10:54

Haha bleeding hell. As if you’ve asked MN this Grin

CathyorClaire · 22/12/2019 10:56

Is Dsis proposing to do the catch up washing for you, OP?

If not she can butt out. Do what works for you.

fedup21 · 22/12/2019 10:59

Do it or don’t do it. It takes minutes. I wouldn’t waste a single second justifying or even talking about doing washing to anyone!

Redcrayons · 22/12/2019 10:59

No.
I shut up shop on Xmas eve and don't even think about it till after Boxing Day. Yes, it piles up but so what? Nobody but me and the DCs see it. I Run a couple of loads in a day to catch up.

I'm not susperstitous in the slightest, but if it involves not washing on NYD then I'm all for it.

Legomadx2 · 22/12/2019 11:00

I'm away for Xmas otherwise I definitely would

WorraLiberty · 22/12/2019 11:03

Blimey I honestly don't know because it's that insignificant, I probably have over the years and it just hasn't registered.

If I had to take the laundry down to the nearest lake and beat the clothes against huge stones, before lugging it all back home, I'd probably remember Xmas Grin

YesThisIsMe · 22/12/2019 11:04

It depends on your house layout and laundry routine surely. If doing the washing would mean lots of machine noise in the place where the family are gathered to eat, sorting clothes on the kitchen floor while people are prepping veg or festooning damp laundry all over the living space then probably not a great idea. I’ve got a washing machine and tumble dryer tucked away in an upstairs bathroom so it wouldn’t make any impact on the living space if I decided to throw a wash on.

marchingonwithmother · 22/12/2019 11:05

Is this threadworthy? Just put a wash on or don't. It's 30 seconds of "work"

Waveysnail · 22/12/2019 11:06

3 under 3. Life really doesnt change much on Christmas day

SheChoseDown · 22/12/2019 12:58

It doesn't fucking matter. Just do it or don't.
Jesus. Consulting strangers on the Internet.... Rly?

sparkli · 22/12/2019 13:25

I have 6 DC and I wash at least one load each day. It's not worth the hassle of trying to catch up by missing that load on Christmas Day. It doesn't take long to stick a load on and then hang it up to dry, or put it in the dryer. I have, on occasion, hung washing on the line on Christmas Day. Go for it, and enjoy your day!

catlady3 · 22/12/2019 13:28

Genuinely curious why this is even a question that needs asking, is the machine industrial size, maybe you have no space to dry the clothes or something? Granted I only do the occasional wash as it's just me, but takes about 1min to put on and maybe 4 to unload and hang? What am I missing?

Spikeyball · 22/12/2019 13:35

Yes probably. Leaky pads don't know what day it is.

DJA1511 · 22/12/2019 13:40

If it helps keep on top of it, do it.

I have two Dc and have so much washing. It’s never ending. Missing a day on Christmas Day would mean even more and 2 loads in Boxing Day so usually Chuck a quick load on.

Mil was shocked last year. She popped over and my washing machine was on. Her reaction surprised me as she has 4 children. Surely she knows there is so much washing to do? 🤣

Perid0t · 22/12/2019 13:41

It’s up to you. But personally no I won’t be.

Aebj · 22/12/2019 13:46

We go to the beach on Christmas morning ( we cook breakfast on the beach) , have a swim and then go home for lunch and a veggie afternoon but my washing machine will go on so I can wash the beach stuff
