...to do a wash on Christmas Day?

We have 3 under 3 and the washing is mad. Not to mention we’re hosting 4 adults and 3 more children over Christmas. I’ll stick a load on in the morning and another in the evening probably. DSis says we should just forget it and catch up the day after.

Will you have the washing machine on on Christmas Day?

I do laundry every day usually, including at Christmas I think(I can't honestly remember)but were a bigger family(there's 8 of us now)and boxing day is a day of playing games with the DC so I'd rather not have lots of laundry to catch up on.

boble1 · 21/12/2019 21:41

I did 4 loads last Christmas Day.

I love washing!

beautifulstranger101 · 21/12/2019 21:41

Yes. Its not as if Christmas day is so sacred that putting the washing machine on will ruin it! Its really not a big deal. At all.

BiddyPop · 21/12/2019 21:42

We will probably have it set on the timer and throw the results into the dryer later or on the clothes horse overnight. Depending on what the load is (I will probably try to do towels for dryer so there’s less work on 25th).

If the washing machine is somewhere hat it won’t interfere with the general enjoyment of the day, and it means you don’t fall behind, why wouldn’t you?

Bluerussian · 21/12/2019 21:48

I've put the machine on on Christmas day before now, why not? It's not as if it's in the room where people are sitting and eating.

shiningstar2 · 21/12/2019 21:49

Back in the day [i'm 67] It would have been seriously strange to do a wash load on Christmas day. The advent of the automatic has changed all that. These days I would put a wash load on if necessary before guests arrived on Christmas day but not while they were actually here. I seriously couldn't walk through guests with a pile of dirty washing on Christmas day but before they arrive definitely ok. Normal service resumes on Boxing Day whether they are staying over or not. Still slightly conditioned by the norms of yesteryear Xmas Grin

GrapefruitGin · 21/12/2019 21:56

Ermmmm..... putting a wash on doesn’t exactly take up a huge amount of time. It’s like asking if you’ll be doing the washing up on Christmas Day.... if you want to, do it! If you don’t want to, leave it! No one will get hurt!

Queenest · 21/12/2019 22:03

70Lisa I agree about not washing on New Years Day. My Dad is superstitious about it - reckons someone will get washed out of the family. He’s worried it will be him, so we’ll not be washing on that day! Grin

Sportsnight · 21/12/2019 22:04

Dunno. I guess so if there’s stuff that needs it? But I’m in the “this is minimal effort” camp. I will not be ironing.

tillytrotter1 · 21/12/2019 22:06

OH did this one year, totally unnecessary, and it was only when I wanted to take a roasting tin from the oven that I realised he had put in both oven gloves.

KnightandDay · 21/12/2019 22:06

I often put on a wash on Christmas day, I hate having a pile of laundry!

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 21/12/2019 22:13

Will I chuff be putting a load of washing on on Christmas day! We usually do a load a day but will use any excuse to take a day off! The basket is never empty anyway so one or two days aren't going to make a difference!

kiki22 · 21/12/2019 22:18

I always do a wash xmas day takes a couple of mins to put it on and maybe 10 mins to sort and hang to dry.

Much easier than having double to find space to dry the next day.

lifeisgoodagain · 21/12/2019 22:22

Have done if there's been sickness or accidents but generally I've never washed daily not even with cloth nappies - I've always had a high capacity washer though

Rosebel · 21/12/2019 22:24

Probably not as we're going away round lunchtime on Christmas day. I try to get all my washing and ironing done by the 24th and then leave it until the 27th. I don't wash on New Year's day though too superstitious.

Bowerbird5 · 21/12/2019 22:48

I won't but can't see a problem with it. You sort it stick it in with liquid/powder and turn on hardly a mammoth task.

BoomBoomsCousin · 21/12/2019 22:53

We might put the washing on. What we won’t do is fold and put away. That can be a family Boxing Day activity.

Coatzillaclaus · 21/12/2019 22:54

TBH I’m Xmas Shock we’re discussing this on MN - Does it really matter? Please do whatever you want with your washing.

Bluerussian · 21/12/2019 23:56

I had no idea it's supposed to be unlucky to put a washing machine on on new year's day! That really is a new one on me but I don't care, not in the least superstitious.

Deelish75 · 22/12/2019 08:10

Why is it unlucky to do a wash on NYD?

I normally do a wash a day, I'll get the washing sorted and loaded into the machine on Christmas Eve, program machine to finish at about 7am on Christmas Day then transfer it straight to tumble dryer, much the same as everyday. Won't be sorting washing out on Christmas night, that can wait until Boxing Day morning.

OP do what works for you, and if your sister has an issue with that then she's that's her issue.

Singlebutmarried · 22/12/2019 08:13

I will, but that’s because I don’t want stinky horse mucking out clothes in the basket. They can go on and they’ll probably be dried later in the day too.

Singlebutmarried · 22/12/2019 08:14

@Deelish75 my Nan told me if you wash in NYD you wash all the luck out of the coming year.

That’s the one day I never put a wash on.

Iloveacurry · 22/12/2019 08:16

Yes I do, early in the morning before anyone arrives.

Deelish75 · 22/12/2019 08:26

@Singlebutmarried thank you, it’s something I’ve never heard before.
No NYD washing for me!

TulipCat · 22/12/2019 08:28

Depends where your washing machine is and how noisy it is. If it will disturb your gathering then don't but if not, go for it.
