When do you eat the Christmas treat food?

Me and Dp have this argument every year. We've just done the Xmas food shop including treats. He thinks we shouldn't touch it until Christmas Eve and I think we should spread the joy by starting it now.

AIBU or is he?

I buy and make some for Christmas that we might have from Christmas eve onwards and are put away until then but separately I buy snacks that are quite Christmassy in place of the snacks we usually have as soon as they become available, like mince pies instead of another type of individual cake or chestnuts. Shop bought mince pies were my pregnancy craving. My children were both conceived mid Jan and I went into labour in September both times, so there was very little opportunity to indulge it and I feel I have catching up to do!

ShinyGiratina · 21/12/2019 23:36

Mince pies/ stollen/ lebkuchen, December is fair game.

Christmas cake, from Christmas Day. Party type food over Christmas/ New Year. Chocolates tend to be unwrapped as presents.

What annoys me, is wanting to buy more mince pies between Christmas Day and New Year, and they're not stocked any more. So you can buy them in the summer/ autumn when they'd hypothetically be out of date by Christmas (because they'd never last that long!) But you can't actually buy them DURING Christmas Confused Bulk buying does not work!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 21/12/2019 23:45

I say Xmas eve but we've already had to restock the Pringles and dip

Overseasmom100 · 21/12/2019 23:48

My teenager would eat theot in 2 days. So Im putting bits out Chrustmas eve

MiniMum97 · 21/12/2019 23:52

You are. Your DH is right. No Christmas food until Christmas Eve. We are staying in a cottage this year and arriving on the 23rd so may be daring and start a day early this year! Lol!

Stefoscope · 22/12/2019 00:01

YANBU. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but it's much better to spread out the treats over a longer period. Tomorrow is my last day of work for the year, but I have already poured myself a couple of drinks from the 'Christmas' stash to prematurely start on the festivities. I expect I'll start on the cheeseboard around Monday lunchtime Smile.

ShatnersWig · 22/12/2019 00:05

Another one here who doesn't start treats until Xmas Eve. Traditional in our family.

LittleReindeer · 22/12/2019 00:08

If we don’t start now it won’t get eaten! The best stuff is saved for 24th but chocs, booze and mince pies are fair game this weekend imo.

YappityYapYap · 22/12/2019 00:10

I've eaten a selection box. I won it in a raffle so it's allowed. I might have a mince pie now

SpoonBlender · 22/12/2019 00:10

We started on the stollen, mulled wine and mince pies at the start of december. It's the only Christmas thing you should start early!

Lipz · 22/12/2019 00:20

Well..... I've been eating it for a while lol I was sneaking walnut whips from the box and closing the box pending it's full. Then I thought, fuck it ! It's Christmas, eat what you want when you want.

I gave all the kids a selection box last night and they were delighted, I've a fridge full of chocolate but the selection boxes were like I had given them 50 quid.

As a child Christmas treats were from Christmas morning where we ate a selection box for breakfast. It would end up us all being so full that we couldn't get through the goodies.

Now I say, eat it and enjoy it whenever you want it.

FiveNightsAtMummys · 22/12/2019 00:38

Yesterday for us. I was going to save it a few more days but I know we'll be getting more chocolate and sweets at xmas so thought I may aswell start now than end up with tonnes on xmas.

Grandmi · 22/12/2019 00:47

gluteustothemaximus · 22/12/2019 00:48

barbedwired · 22/12/2019 02:22

I've been at the Lindor choc balls since yesterday

Grinchymcfinchy · 22/12/2019 07:10

Looks like I've won the poll and the celebrations are getting cracked open later.

Depends on how much you’ve bought.

Aroundnabout1 · 22/12/2019 07:33

If i started now I'd have a stone to lose by NY instead of half a stone so trying hard to resist as it will take me 2 months to lose a stone.

CuckooCuckooClock · 22/12/2019 07:37

My dh is also a misery guts and won’t let us start on the goodies yet. Yesterday he had to pop out so dc and I scoffed a whole box of cheese straws in his absence.

lowlandLucky · 22/12/2019 07:40

By the end of October my DH had eaten 2 boxes of 20 mince pies from Lidl, i will start the Christmas treats on Tuesday and continue to stuff my face until the 1st or maybe the 2nd or......

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 22/12/2019 07:42

Christmas Radio Times started yesterday, so Christmas treats started then too!

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 22/12/2019 07:44

I've hidden all of ours! It's all packed up and stashed away with the kids' Christmas presents. All the crisps, nuts, biscuits, chocolate, crackers, alcohol, cake etc. DH knows I've been shopping but doesn't know what has been bought. The bags (and bags) will come down on Christmas Eve. Obviously if he really wanted something nice then I'd open something! It's just the way we do it in our house because neither of us can be trusted not to eat it all and then I'd have to go back for more.

Fr0g · 22/12/2019 07:44

when did it start appearing in shops? - then.
I won't be home at Christmas, but have felt the need to test several Christmas Puddings (if you get one that is on the dry side, dousing it with a good slug of port works wonders)

SlidingIntoForties · 22/12/2019 07:48

We started last night on the disappointing small tub of Roses in the pretty tin.

hazell42 · 22/12/2019 07:51

Everything is embargoed until 4 pm Christmas Eve in our house.
That's when we put up the tree.
After that angel goes on the top and the lights go on, it's a free for all!
