'You lost, get over it'.

Has anybody ever said this phrase and not been a complete and utter dickhead?

I mean, would any civilised person ever use it in any other situation?

Your DH is upset as they didn't get the job they'd hoped for.

"Honestly DH, you lost. Get over it".

A friend lost out on a house they'd set their heart on.

"It's been a week now. Stop crying, and get over it, honestly".

Your kid came last at sports day.

"LOSER! Get over it, for goodness sake".

It's just so rude. Either join in with the discussion, or ignore it. Even my 4yo understands that it's rude to gloat about winning, and people won't want to play with you if you keep doing it.

I always imagine people saying it in real life, then sticking their tongue out, putting their thumb on their nose and wiggling their fingers (is there a name for this action?), proclaiming 'na na na na naaaa'.

Any other phrases that are particularly irritating to you?

NB: I know I'll get 100 posts saying 'turkeys voting for Christmas', which I guess is the equivalent stupid phrase favoured by the left. But at least they get taken the piss out of when they use it. 'You lost, get over it' seems to be a completely valid contribution to debate on MN these days.

People aren’t just talking about it though. They’re being actively rude. Calling BJ a ct and applying the same term to Tory voters. Saying stuff about turkeys voting for Christmas and wearing jackets with the slogan “Kill all Tories”. Protesting the fair and square result. The bizarre god-worship of JC which fails to acknowledge the problems with his socialist policies. “Thanks for giving us hope JC”, “JC we love you!”. Saying they voted for the poor, sick and weak, and any form of self concern or self preservation is disgusting. They’re being sore losers and it’s not very nice. I doubt Tory voters would be so rude and unaccepting of a democratic result if the shoe were on the other foot.

Do you know, I was thinking that if Labour won and the Tories were upset about it, I can't imagine there would be a load of posts saying 'you lost, get over it'. Then I had a word with myself re internalised bias, and reminded myself that there are dickheads of every political persuasion etc etc etc. Smile plus, why is it rude to thank Corbyn for providing hope? You may think it foolish, but I can't see how it could be construed as rude to anybody.

27 posts in and no one has answered this? Enquiring minds want to know!

KnowBetterDoBetter · 20/12/2019 18:12

*Yeah, I mean we all know it could be worse but when the shit hits the fan it's irrelevant really that it is worse for others, I mean I know it's worse for the families of the people injured/killed at Whaakari but it doesn't stop the shit in my life being bad. I'm sorry for what other people are going through and wish they weren't but it couldn't get much worse for me with my parents right now.

I'm not explaining this very well.*

No, I completely agree. Some people really are insensitive wankers. It sounds completely shit, and even worse at this time of year. SadWine

It's rude. But the General Election is over and therefore any further debate or hand wringing is fruitless and I can understand people not wanting Labour supporters still wishing to argue about it. I voted Labour btw.

That's not really the case in our adversarial parliament, though. The Conservatives 'winning' doesn't just give them carte blanche to enact whatever they like. They will still be held to account by The Opposition, and The House of Lords. My constituency retained its Labour MP, and I expect him to fight tooth and nail for the best interests of his constituents and the country. And it is guaranteed that there will be another general election at some point.

You lost, get over it. Is a gross oversimplification. Some may even say it's a very undemocratic attitude... Shock

Smileyaxolotl1 · 20/12/2019 18:13

refraction he was probably shocked because you were talking complete rubbish. It wasn’t 300k extra votes the tories got compared to labour. It was over 3 1/2 million more votes.

YouJustDoYou · 20/12/2019 18:13

I've not heard anyone say it.

What is the difference between this and

Racist
Ignorant
Disablist

Apologist
Handmaiden
Stepford wife
Mansplainer/ing
Snowflake?

Generally its that the person complaining about "You lost, get over it" that is the one using one or many of those terms.

Unless you are against all of these then the only reason you are complaining is because now you are on the other end.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/12/2019 18:17

I asked the question what will boris do now? Will he actually get Brexit done or will he piss about for years like his predecessor response was YOU LOST GET OVER IT, fucking remoaner, corbyn shagger, (this is obviously not here but elsewhere) my point is it doesnt matter WHAT I say as a labour voter I'm not going to get a reasoned response EVER

EstuaryBird · 20/12/2019 18:18

Genuine question: what should we say instead?

A friend of mine is a lifelong Labour supporter, as am I, she i sa Corbynite, I am not. She is FB posting, Tweeting and messaging me to tell me what she’s put on FB and Twitter.....I’m bloody sick of it. But she’s a great friend when she’s off her soapbox.

So tell me, what am I supposed to keep saying to half a dozen posts a day?? I’m sick of it tbh.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 20/12/2019 18:23

Protesting the fair and square result.

Nothing wrong with protesting! There shouldn't be threats made or violence, but protesting is legitimate.

senua · 20/12/2019 18:30

Nothing wrong with protesting [the fair and square result]!
Yes there is. Are you saying that you want to overturn democracy?Shock

Livelovebehappy · 20/12/2019 18:32

And of course Labour supporters would never ever have said this were the situation reversed and Labour had won. Because they’re such a sensitive kind hearted bunch and would have been totally empathetic......Hmm

The right to peaceful protest is literally a fundamental part of democracy. If people weren't allowed to march or speak out about the prime minister, that's called something quite different.

Bit of a reach Grin but OK. I'm against those terms being used just because of the way somebody votes. If people are actually being racist/ disablist etc. then I absolutely do think they should be called out. Not sure what that has to do with the price of fish, though.

Covered this in a PP. I have agreed that Labour voters can use idiotic phrases too. This one just really grates on me on a more general level. It would annoy me if people continually said it in any other situation, like the ones I described in my OP.

I hate it when its applied to politics...so childish.
.no it's thousands of people who " lost." As though it's a sport.

Nonnymum · 20/12/2019 18:45

You are not being unreasonable. Its not a game its the future of the Country. I will never stop being sad about the direction we seem to be going in.

CakeAndGin · 20/12/2019 18:46

It’s a lot less rude that calling the whole of North stupid and assuming they can’t decide something for their own future.

If people can’t handle “you lost. Get over it” why are they posting about turkeys voting for Christmas?

AllergicToAMop · 20/12/2019 18:49

I think it's adequate answer to certain people. Like the type who for a week goes around proclaiming people are "Murdering tory cunts!"...
And I am not a Tory...

eurochick · 20/12/2019 18:51

It's so childish and mean spirited. Winners could at least be gracious in victory.

At least "turkeys voting for Christmas" is usually said slightly ruefully. I do think many of those who voted for Brexit will be the ones who will suffer most, and I feel sorry for them.

MidnightCircus · 20/12/2019 18:55

Is it cus you lost and you aren't over it? Grin

I voted Tory but actually, I do agree with you. It's dismissive. Saying that, I can understand the thought behind it, as it's a little annoying constantly being told voting Tory is wrong, you're scum, racist etc and Labour would have been better. That may be so (not one of us knows the future), but the end result is not going to change. Until the next election.

peonypower · 20/12/2019 18:55

Yeah well there you go
If Corbyn had got in, I'd have been sad about the direction the country was going in (fast track to bankruptcy).
But I wouldn't have been whining about it. I'd have plotted my exit.

meow1989 · 20/12/2019 19:07

I voted labour, my whole family vote labour, my husband voted labour. We all boted remain. I had to say to my husband the other day "it's rubbish, it's happened, you need to stop now", so not quite the same but similar sentiment. I am by no means complacent and am worried for the future of this country, in particular the nhs for sure, and I know now is the time to start planning the next move, but can we at least have christmas? I am exhausted by political ridiculous right now.

happinessischocolate · 20/12/2019 19:52

you lost get over it

No I didn't lose, I voted labour, but the question wasn't who do you think will win, it was who do you want in government.

Likewise a Tory voter didn't win, they personally weren't completing for anything.

See also: when a football team win, their supporters didn't also win because they weren't taking part.

Mayorquimby2 · 20/12/2019 19:56

"But... it's been a week?"

But tbf prior to that it was years of telling them how they were thick and racist or thick and didn't understand what they were voting for or thick and had been tricked in to voting how they did.

They weren't really allowed to ignore the discussion, anyone who admitted voting for brexit had an explanation demanded of them and when they did ignore it the proclamations of "it's no surprise that I'm yet to meet a brexit voter who can explain it justify their vote" rang out.

So it's no surprise that following a referendum and two general elections were they're still being told they voted the wing way and that others know better, that they do essentially want to say"fuck off and stop moaning at us"

For the record:
Not Tory
Don't live in England
Think brexit is monumentally stupid
Think Boris Johnson is an untrustworthy self interested opportunist and the fact that he was elected to lead the country is an indictment of the British electorate (for which they are free to tell me to fuck off and mind my own business)
