AIBU?

To think that Yorkshire puddings do not go in a Christmas dinner?

A traditional Christmas dinner that is. Yorkshire puddings are for roast beef surely? Not turkey and ham. What if the pudding accidentally touches the cranberry sauce? Xmas Envy

@fligglepige I agree. I was brought up that Yorkshire puds were for with roast beef and roast beef only.

We only have them with roast beef, but I don't understand the outrage at having them with Christmas dinner. And what on earth would be so bad about them touching cranberry sauce?

We have rib of beef for Christmas lunch, so I'm permitted.
But then I ruin everything by serving up pork, sage and onion stuffing on the side.

All roast dinner trimmings seem to be had with all roast dinners now. I remember when it was

Beef - yorkshire puddings and horseradish
Lamb - mint sauce and stuffing
Pork - apple sauce and stuffing
Chicken - stuffing
Turkey - cranberry sauce and stuffing

And mixing them up Was Not Done.

I love Yorkshire puddings so cook them with Christmas dinner, I know they technically belong with beef.

YABVVU! How bizarre! Yorkshire puddings go with every roast we have. Of course they go with a Christmas Dinner. Why would you not? Xmas Smile

You’d have kittens at my Christmas dinner, OP!

Abundant Yorkshire puddings (I don’t eat red meat, so roast beef has always been off the menu...but I’m certainly not letting that mean I miss out on a good Yorkie or three!).

I also hate bread sauce but LOVE horseradish sauce, so have a good dollop of that with my Xmas dinner (as well as cranberry).

I make dry old turkey for others, but also make chicken, ham and duck. With Yorkshires and horseradish. It’s a Christmas travesty, I know. Grin.

I was told a lovely story by an elderly Welsh gentleman I knew of the first time he had dinner at his future Yorkshire MiL's.

They were a mining family and as mentioned previously, Yorkshires were (and still are) served as a starter with gravy to fill you up before the expensive meat course.

Only he didn't know this. He thought puddings were all he was getting. So he made a show of how delicious it was, feeling sorry for the family as clearly times were hard and a bit confused by all his MiL's industry in the kitchen to just produce puds.

He felt rather foolish when, in his words, "the biggest spread you'd ever seen" made its way on to the table. He learnt a useful lesson about making assumptions.

Yorkshires go with everything. And they shouldn't be the over-cooked and charred mounds of sadness you often get in pubs.

Not just Christmas Dinner though is it? On almost every roast now ! Like you Y/S puds are for Beef only .

theWarOnPeace · 20/12/2019 08:51

Absolutely not. You wouldn't serve stuffing with beef so why serve YPs with turkey?

I do! There’s nothing much that isn’t improved by adding stuffing and Yorkshires. I don’t get the purism at all.

At Christmas we have a big chicken, and slow cooked beef, with Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, mint sauce(!), horseradish, no cranberry sauce because nobody likes it, and no Brussels!

That’s interesting @SerenDippitty, roasts from my childhood were just like that (although mint sauce and redcurrant jelly with lamb, bread sauce with turkey and stuffing only with birds, cos they have a cavity in which to put it). Grandmother, my aunts and my mother all abided by The Rules.

I went through my 20s and 30s rebelling against dogmatic puritanical roast rules, and Yorkshire Puddings were added with wild gay abandon to everything. Now I'm in my 40s and burdened by indigestion and ahem consistency issues I frequently feel completely over-faced with the towers of food you get when you have a pub roast. A little shriek starts bubbling up inside, it’s all TOO MUCH. So I have returned to The Roast Rules and am happier for it. Can’t say anyone has complained either, and if they did they would receive a dark look.

Anything goes for Christmas dinner.
It’s a time for celebration and spending time with people who are special to you.
I cooked Ds2 a small pizza a few years ago to go with his Christmas dinner. Apparently it was the best Christmas ever!
