Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

What a ridiculous OP.

I’m off for two weeks. I don’t feel in the least bit guilty about it. I’m a frontline public sector worker, but I’ve been able to take leave.

Of course I am grateful to emergency services and anyone else working over Christmas. I don’t think you should begrudge teachers, social workers or anyone else who has got some holiday, though.

Bitterness won’t make your Christmas any happier, OP.

Devonishome1 · 20/12/2019 08:33

I’ve got two weeks off and I’m proud to say that👍

sandybanana · 20/12/2019 08:34

I'm back at the third week of January.

Lots of annual leave to use up.

I also suffer terribly from
Severe anxiety and also ocd.

I need this time off to also get
my mental health in a better place. ( fingers crossed)

CharlottesPleb · 20/12/2019 08:34

Where do these people think the annual leave comes from that others are using at Christmas?

It comes from time off they haven't had during the rest of the year.

I do sympathise with people who are stuck working over Christmas, and I will avoid rubbing it in their noses, but I strongly feel it's not correct to assume it is something to envy in every case.

dottiedodah · 20/12/2019 08:36

I appreciate you are sore at other peoples "luck" in having 2 weeks break at Christmas ,while you are working very hard .However with the greatest respect to you ,surely you would expect to be working anti social hours in the essential services? I cant understand why anyone would "boast " about their holiday TBH, Also dont actually know many people apart from Teachers ,with 2 weeks off? DS works for a multi national co with 1 week off.DH works for Telecom Giant ,only 2 days !

MerryDeath · 20/12/2019 08:37

Hmm sounds like you need to get yourself a new job. that level of resentment must show in your work.

ClientListQueen · 20/12/2019 08:41

Office job - I get three days off (24/25/26)
I've done my Christmas working, 10 years in the emergency services and before that 7 years in pubs

Penners99 · 20/12/2019 08:44

I am off 14 Dec to 12 Jan, but I am self employed.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 20/12/2019 08:45

Have my first Xmas Biscuit

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 20/12/2019 08:47

Sadly OP, this thread illuminates the reason for the result of the recent election perfectly Sad
Thank you for working at Christmas - it's appreciated.

DukeChatsworth · 20/12/2019 08:48

I’m having my first Christmas fortnight off in 14 years. My happiness should not detract from your own OP. My time off does not disrespect anyone else. You sound quite bitter about it so may want to consider making changes in your life if you feel others should not be happy for their own good things.

CareOfPunts · 20/12/2019 08:49

Sadly OP, this thread illuminates the reason for the result of the recent election perfectly

It really doesn’t.

FilthyforFirth · 20/12/2019 08:51

Wow, you're going to hate me then. I've been off since the 12th and dont go back until the 6th.

But I've had NO holiday this year, and not more than 2 days in a row off together all year. My DH has been quite badly depressed, I have changed career and am a full time working mum to a 2 year old.

To say I will be glad to see the back of this year is an understatement. I absolutely deserve some time off.

I am extremely grateful for what essential and emergency services do over Christmas. But that doesnt mean those in other sectors dont also deserve time off.

Not to brag. Essential services are working But you have bragged, and treated readers as if they are not in this world.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working Are they? all of them? I'm sure lots of them are, but what's your point?

We get it you have 2 weeks off. Speak for yourself.

Please have some respect Who has disrespected you? You come on like a kid whose trainers have been dissed.

WhereverIMayRoam · 20/12/2019 08:56

Sadly OP, this thread illuminates the reason for the result of the recent election perfectly

ODFOD it really doesn’t. We can be appreciative of essential services without the requirement to observe a moment’s silence for a stranger on the internet who won’t have Christmas Day off. I have a lot of respect for the people who do these jobs but the MN requirement to venerate them gets bloody tiresome.

DinoSn0re · 20/12/2019 08:59

you don't have to take your holidays at peak times

This. It has cost us thousands extra over the years to have holidays because we can only go during peak times. So whilst we don’t rub it in anyone’s face, we see it as a fair exchange and won’t hide the fact that we’re pleased that DH has time off over Christmas.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/12/2019 08:59

My DH is not “essential” or retail or hospitality but he will only be off Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I am in education so do get a long time off but when I was in financial services I only got Bank Holidays too. Very few people get a lot of time off at Christmas unless they’ve saved up their leave and even then the business needs may dictate that that only one or two people can be off.

Nat6999 · 20/12/2019 08:59

When I was a civil servant managers used to start planning Christmas cover in August, everyone put down what they wanted & then minimum cover was worked out. Sometimes there was enough cover without forcing anyone else to work, other times staff were forced to choose times to work. That was how it was supposed to work but in reality favourite staff always got what they wanted & everyone else ended up having to cover, I was so glad once I had ds & chose to work term time only because it meant that I didn't have to worry about having a manager who had favourites & being involved in the stupidity.

CharlottesPleb · 20/12/2019 09:00

It really doesn't

You know in a way it does, because I see a few of the things on display here that were a small part of turning people away.

Boastful martyrdom.
Envy based on a broken thought process.
"I'm better than you"

TheOrigFV45 · 20/12/2019 09:02

Last day of work for me today until 6th of Jan. Anyone who begrudges me that or feels bitter or whatever can sod off.

I'm entitled to it.

I am of course thankful and mindful of all those who are working over the Christmas period. The two feelings are not mutually exclusive.

WhereverIMayRoam · 20/12/2019 09:02

Actually you may have a point there CharlottesPleb!

Alexandra54 · 20/12/2019 09:02

Foxes stay off social media, if simple things like those enjoying time off over Christmas annoys you.

I worked Christmas Day on many occasions, and never begrudged others their time off.
Just as I don't begrudge others their holidays and new cars (that I can't afford) and people having babies (although I finally have one myself after a 6yr IVF battle - couldn't afford to try again, despite that I'd love another).

If you spend your life being envious of others, then you'll never truly appreciate what you have.

LemonRedwood · 20/12/2019 09:03

I have two weeks off at Christmas, but that's because my job is term-time only. All annual leave entitlement has to be taken during the school holidays and the rest is - guess what - unpaid time. I, like a PP, took a significant paycut to work term-time only because that's what works for us.

I am hugely grateful to our essential services who work over Christmas and I'm not sure I've ever bragged that I'm not working that time. Answered questions when asked, yes, but bragged? No.

What was said to you, OP? Because it sounds like you're projecting massively.

TheReef · 20/12/2019 09:04

Some people HAVE to take two weeks off for Christmas.

I don't suppose the OP will think of them when she's spouting off about her summer holidays when they are having to work Hmm live and let live op.

pelirocco123 · 20/12/2019 09:04

As luckily we all get at least minimum holiday entitlement , anyone whose job requires them to work at Christmas will be getting time off when others arent .
Plus when you take the job you know what is required
