To blame Daycare for my dogs kennel cough?

DobieMom81 · 19/12/2019 20:19

My dog (7 month old puppy) goes to daycare twice a week. She was last there last Thursday. On Saturday she started coughing and became quite unwell. £100 at the vets and kennel cough diagnosed. I contacted the daycare to make them aware and they admitted that they’ve had a few dogs “call in sick” with KC in the past week. So they clearly knew it was spreading around the dogs in their care and chose not to tell anyone. Now my French bulldog has caught it off my puppy. I’ve been in contact with a number of customers and their dogs are all suffering with KC.

If I’d known it was going around the school I would have kept her at home. But they never thought to mention it??!!

I’m fuming. They’re now at me to pay £160 for January’s dayschool fees. AIBU to send a strongly worded email tomorrow about the fact that they knowingly let dogs go to their care knowing KC was spreading around when they should have been warning people???

Was your dog vaccinated against it?

CallmeAngelina · 19/12/2019 20:24

Sorry, but it is your responsibility to vaccinate your dog against Kennel Cough - particularly if they're mixing with other dogs at somewhere like day-care/kennels. (clue's in the name!)

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/12/2019 20:24

I've never encountered a kennel that accept dog that aren't vaccinated against kennel cough. Why are your dogs not vaccinated?

Yarboosucks · 19/12/2019 20:24

I have never allowed my dogs to attend any form of daycare, walking service or fennel that does not require all dogs to be vaccinated. Therefore, if your dog was not vaccinated you are part of the problem and have no grounds to complain.

Scarsthelot · 19/12/2019 20:24

They had a few dogs not come in.

Those dogs may not have all been there at once or interacted with eachother.

Also, if your dog isn't vaccinated against it, he could have got it anywhere.

Yarboosucks · 19/12/2019 20:25

fennel? meant kennel obvs

DancingPyjamas · 19/12/2019 20:25

Two questions here OP.
A. Is your dog vaccinated for it?
B. Did you check the kennels health certificate prior to placing your dog with them?

I can't stress enough how important those two factors are when choosing kennels.

nobodyimportant · 19/12/2019 20:27

Do they not insist on dogs being vaccinated Shock?!

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/12/2019 20:28

Is there a good reason neither of your dogs are vaccinated? Surely that would have been the best way to avoid this.

koshkat · 19/12/2019 20:29

A kennel cough vaccine is not 100% effective so your dog could still have contracted it even if vaccinated.

Agree with others that all dogs attending such a facility should be fully vaccinated.

DobieMom81 · 19/12/2019 20:30

Neither dogs vaccinated as they’re never in kennels as such. I just assumed that if dogs had kennel cough they would be kept away from daycare.

Willing to accept I have been unreasonable

If you are sending a dog unvaccinated against kennel cough to day care then you kind of have to expect it really. If you choose a day care that doesn't ask to see copies of vaccination certificates including kennel cough then you haven't chosen a well run day care. If you don't want to pay fees for January find new day care.

Celebelly · 19/12/2019 20:31

The vaccine is only effective against certain strains so a vaccinated dog can still catch it. OP's dog may well have been vaccinated. But KC is just kind of part and parcel of kennels life or anywhere where there are multiple different dogs sharing toys/water bowls etc.

Celebelly · 19/12/2019 20:32

Cross-post. Vaccinate. Daycare is the same as kennels. She's spending time twice a week with multiple different dogs. Of course she should be vaccinated!

TheDarkPassenger · 19/12/2019 20:32

Is it just our area that don’t vaccinate for kennel cough then? Confused

LittleSweet · 19/12/2019 20:33

You should have vaccinated your dog for kennel cough and all the other vaccinations. It's your responsibility as a dog owner.

DobieMom81 · 19/12/2019 20:35

It’s not really a thing in our area to vaccinate against KC ... she’s had everything else but vet said she only needed KC vaccine if she was staying in kennels. I just didn’t think 😞

ClashCityRocker · 19/12/2019 20:36

Our local dog kennels/day care places insist on all dogs being at least 14 days downwind of their kennel cough vaccinations. I'm surprised a boarding kennel doesn't insist on it.

billybagpuss · 19/12/2019 20:36

You wouldn't expect a nursery to waive the fees if your child caught a cold from another kid and you kept them home, same difference with your dog.

Mine is vaccinated but if she caught kennel cough its irritating but usually easily treated at home.

Scarsthelot · 19/12/2019 20:36

Neither dogs vaccinated as they’re never in kennels as such. I just assumed that if dogs had kennel cough they would be kept away from daycare.

They have been once their owner knows.

Your dogs may not go in kennels but where do you think they get kennel cough from?

They get it from other dogs.

adaline · 19/12/2019 20:38

Why on earth isn't she vaccinated?!

You can't blame daycare for this. Your dog isn't vaccinated - she could have caught it anywhere.

Frenchw1fe · 19/12/2019 20:40

My kennel use herbal remedies if any dogs get kennel cough and it clears up more quickly.
Try raw honey, coconut oil and garlic.
Kennel cough vaccine is not 100% effective and wears off quickly. Much better to support you dogs immune system.

Also perhaps switch to a harness as the collar will cause more coughing.

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 19/12/2019 20:44

Every day care/home boarding/kennel I’ve ever used specifically says dogs must have KC vaccine.

Sorry your dogs are poorly but a bit of common sense says if your dogs going to be interacting with other dogs they should be vaccinated, dogs can pick it up anywhere not just day care. Just a walk in the park.

KittyMcKitty · 19/12/2019 20:47

My dog has never been to kennels / day care but is still vaccinated. My vets say there has been an increase in the number of cases of kennel cough.

Orchidflower1 · 19/12/2019 20:47

If an unvaccinated toddler gets measles from nursery then you’d blame yourself for not vaccinating. It’s the same thing here.
