To blame Daycare for my dogs kennel cough?

DobieMom81 · 19/12/2019 20:19

My dog (7 month old puppy) goes to daycare twice a week. She was last there last Thursday. On Saturday she started coughing and became quite unwell. £100 at the vets and kennel cough diagnosed. I contacted the daycare to make them aware and they admitted that they’ve had a few dogs “call in sick” with KC in the past week. So they clearly knew it was spreading around the dogs in their care and chose not to tell anyone. Now my French bulldog has caught it off my puppy. I’ve been in contact with a number of customers and their dogs are all suffering with KC.

If I’d known it was going around the school I would have kept her at home. But they never thought to mention it??!!

I’m fuming. They’re now at me to pay £160 for January’s dayschool fees. AIBU to send a strongly worded email tomorrow about the fact that they knowingly let dogs go to their care knowing KC was spreading around when they should have been warning people???

It’s not really a thing in our area to vaccinate against KC Really?

That's unbelievable. Really it is.

I am unlikely to kennel my dog. But he had his KC and his elath passport thingy says so. I am glad I did as I needed to use a kennel unexpectedly He is due for his next on in January, he will be getting it even though, again I don't expect to put him into a kennel or day care him!

I can't believe ANY provider wouldn't insist on it. Hell, a few round here won't take an un neutered male, mine has an implant and has been refused.

They can get KC from any socialising with another dog with it. However, my vet does my dog's vaccine seperately to his usual boosters as they said it wasn't recommended before 1 year. He unfortunately caught it as a puppy too despite not attending day care or kennels. Please look into it yourself and if it's right about waiting until 1 get it done then. Regardless, your older dog could have had vaccine. Sounds irresponsible of vet to be giving that advice!

partyhatsoff · 20/12/2019 10:35

Sorry but that's tough, you should make sure your doggie is vaccinated against KC or wait until they are before putting them in a kennel situ...

My daycare did not require KC vacc, so when DDog got it I accepted the fees still had to be paid to keep her place. They had several dogs off with it, why should they have suffered financially because some of the dog owners did not vaccinate?
It was such a ball ache rearranging work etc that we got her vaccinated from then on! She had it quite mildly, but older dogs and puppies might not have been so lucky.

However, my vet does my dog's vaccine seperately to his usual boosters as they said it wasn't recommended before 1 year. Woah! They can have the nasal spray at 3 WEEKS!!!! The injection is safe from about 6 weeks , puppies usually get immunity from mum up until then!

Vaccinated dogs can get kennel cough. Mine did. He was current on vaccinations. He was so unwell the vet was calling me daily to check on him.

notfromstepford · 20/12/2019 12:07

You can't blame daycare - it's your responsibility. I know some kennels don't insist on KC vaccine. But my dog goes to kennels, so I got the KC vaccine. This is no different to anti-vaxxers not vaccinating their children and then blaming school if they get measles. It's not their fault.

Sillyscrabblegames · 20/12/2019 19:03

Op is irritated that the day care is doing nothing to minise spread of the virus. They didn't even tell other dog owners it was going around. They haven't told op not to bring their dog. The day care is irresponsible. It's even cheekier to then be invoicing for fees in advance.

Scarsthelot · 20/12/2019 19:48

Sillyscrabblegames why are you so convinced this kennels did something wrong.

They know some dogs that have attended have had KC. There could have been very good reason to presume the dogs disnt get it there. They may all attend at different times.

OP isnt taking her dog, so why would they tell her not to? Ops report may prompt some action if there is a link. It's possible that all these dogs caught it somewhere else, Independently.

Most kennels or day care invoice in advance. Just like a children's nursery, you pay for their place, even if they cant attend and pay in advance.

BiteyShark · 20/12/2019 19:54

My dog had never been in kennels yet he gets the vaccine because he goes to daycare which means he regularly mixes with other dogs. Whilst it doesn't stop him catching it, it does lower the risk.

YABU to blame daycare and think you only needed the vaccine if you use kennels.

Rogues22 · 21/12/2019 04:22

FYI a dog can get KC even if it is vaccinated against it. It’s like in humans you can still get the flu even if you have been vaccinated, there’s so many different strains of it and the vaccines don’t protect from all of them. Dogs can also get KC from parks, water bowls, sniffing faeces etc. without even contacting another dog. They should be vaccinated from it however as it reduces the chances of getting it.

Chewysmum · 21/12/2019 12:53

I voted YANBU but after reading that your dogs are not vaccinated I've completely changed my mind, I can't believe that someone would be stupid enough to send an unvaccinated puppy to any form of social situation, completely unreasonable. The daycare also has culpability in allowing any unvaccinated dog into its facility but as the owner you are ultimately responsible for your dogs. Not only that, it could have been your puppy who began the outbreak to begin with! It literally baffles me at times how people can be so stupid, would you have sent your toddler to nursery without having any vaccinations??

KarmaStar · 21/12/2019 14:17

Op,your sentence about the dog's not being in kennels is ridiculous!
Your puppy is sent to mix with dogs all day and you didn't get him inoculated or check the playgroup was?
You are irresponsible as are they.

JavaQ · 21/12/2019 14:25

YABU
I hope you insured your french bulldog. They are expensive to fix when their cervical discs extrude...

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/12/2019 14:27

I'm very surprised the daycare would take an unvaccinated dog.
