Boris Watch - Thread 1

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 19:11

Well, it's been done for Trump since he got elected.
No doubt some people will complain it's on AIBU - but it's a place with traffic.

So let's use this to keep an eye on the changes under Boris.

First Thing:

Boris introduces clause in the withdrawal agreement so the UK must leave with WTO rules if there is no trade agreement with the EU by the end of 2020

www.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/17/pound-slides-to-pre-election-levels-in-wake-of-bid-to-outlaw-brexit-extension

Feel free to comment and add things that you notice changing. The Trump threads are at 97 now.

soen I have a comment on the prospect link yes. That was a lot of speculation in one article.

OLDquestion · 17/12/2019 22:27

@chomalungma this thread is a great idea, thanks for starting it. It’s the first thing that has mildly cheered me up since the exit poll.

I’m in Smile.

Soen · 17/12/2019 22:28

Cendrillon - it's not lefty at all. It's just the facts. How can fact be left or right wing? Facts are facts.

He is planning an overhaul of the civil service. He is planning to change the relationship between the courts and parliament. He is planning to amend the HRA. Damien Green DID say social care insurance should be bought by those who can afford it.

Please explain how this is left or right wing? It's just a series of events, surely.

I do enjoy cataloguing it all though, you're not wrong there.

longtimelurkerhelen · 17/12/2019 22:29

@Peregrina

he won the willy waving contest between himself and Nigel Farage Thanks for that image Hmm need brain bleach

Interesting times ahead. Thanks for the thread.

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 22:30

Boris' tweets are really boring. Not like Trumps

Or should it be Boris's tweets?

Now there's a thread with potential Grin

Soen · 17/12/2019 22:31

Thank you for your balanced critique, Midnight. Indeed there was a lot of speculation, but that's probably because the wording the Government has used is so vague, its open to interpretation.

But thank you for assessing the article fairly. I appreciate this, far more than being criticised for being 'lefty'.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 17/12/2019 22:33

We need this thread. Following with interest and not a little trepidation.

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:33

Its true, it is very vague, I cannot disagree there. I'd say it was written from a left point of view, but that's not a reason to just dismiss it. I'm not a fan of echo chambers

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:36

This is actually what the Times article is referring to. And the Spector one

Soen · 17/12/2019 22:37

I'm glad you can discuss it openly and fairly Midnight. I make no assumption of your political leanings. I'm just here to post events as they unfold.

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:37

Prospect* not sure where I got Spector from haha

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 22:37

Whilst we're at it.

Here's a link to the Conservative Manifesto

Might be worth download in case the link vanishes.

Placemarking for now.

(Thanks for this thread, OP. All too necessary.)

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:39

I voted Tory this time, but traditionally always voted Lib Dem. I'm interested in the thread as well. May have voted for him but doesn't mean I won't critique if it's needed. Gonna lurk mostly though

Soen · 17/12/2019 22:40

I can see downsides to some of what you've posted Midnight. As well as upsides.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 17/12/2019 22:40

The BBC is still sucking up to him. Just about to watch the programme on the NHS and wondering how long it wil, take for Boris's supporters to realise what is happening.

ethelfleda · 17/12/2019 22:41

The sad thing is though, when we are all proven right about Boris, his fan club are so stubborn they won’t admit they agree and will find a way to blame Labour Sad

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:42

Its very vague Soen, it could go any way. I absolutely can't disagree there

Soen · 17/12/2019 22:43

It's only fair that we hold our leaders to account, no matter colour they wear. They act on our behalf.

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 22:43

onna lurk mostly though

Good thread, in the correct place. Mirrors the long running Trump threads.

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 22:50

The Conservatives are going to hold an inquiry into complaints of discrimination in their party.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/dec/17/equalities-professor-to-head-tory-inquiry-into-discrimination-in-party

The party said the review would look at how it could improve its processes, to ensure “any instances are isolated, and that there are robust processes in place to stamp them out as and when they occur.

OP posts:
Straightintoit · 17/12/2019 22:51

However we voted, we need to hold our leaders to account. This isn’t about moaning lefties, it’s about checking that the manifesto promises come to light.
Thanks for the thread, OP, and the link shares so far, PPs.
Watching with interest.

MidnightCircus · 17/12/2019 22:54

Waves to choma Grin

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 17/12/2019 22:56

@ethelfleda I understand how you feel as I feel the same.

I also feel that what we all need to do now is to let this story play out the way it is going to play out. Many people who voted for Boris did so believing that he will deliver on his promises (not that he's made any). They won't listen to reason what the dissenters are saying, same as the brexiteers wont listen when we warn of the dangers to this country from that. They need to see and experience it all for themselves.
