Boris Watch - Thread 1

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 19:11

Well, it's been done for Trump since he got elected.
No doubt some people will complain it's on AIBU - but it's a place with traffic.

So let's use this to keep an eye on the changes under Boris.

First Thing:

Boris introduces clause in the withdrawal agreement so the UK must leave with WTO rules if there is no trade agreement with the EU by the end of 2020

www.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/17/pound-slides-to-pre-election-levels-in-wake-of-bid-to-outlaw-brexit-extension

Feel free to comment and add things that you notice changing. The Trump threads are at 97 now.

Second Thing might be that BoJo buys a suit that fits him. I dread to think how much they cost, but they look rubbish on him.
Of course, it could be part of his 'rumpled schoolboy/spaniel eyes' spiel.
I bet his tailor spends his days with his head in his hands, hoping nobody learns that he suits-up Boris.

Their majority is so large that they no longer even need to remember to shoehorn someone who isn’t (1) male or (2) white into the photoshoot.

Baaaahhhhh · 19/12/2019 16:48

Not quite as old and white as previously though:

Moving in the right direction.....

Not quite as old and white as previously though

True. Does anyone remember this from Yes Minister?

Worth remembering that that "majority" and "landslide" and all these "new voters" are only an extra 1.2% increase. It's the FPTP system in action again.
And now we have no control over what Johnson does with our law or legal system, or other public institutions. Yay democracy.

Jason118 · 19/12/2019 17:37

From Al Jazeera :

Tim Bale, professor of politics at the Queen Mary University of London, said Conservative prime ministers from Margaret Thatcher to Theresa May all took office promising, like Johnson, to "heal the nation" and tackle social injustice. "But actually in the end ... they don't want to spend too much money, they don't want to raise taxes too high, they don't want to regulate the economy - and actually nothing much happens," he said. "So don't hold your breath."

Seems a reasonable summary.

Peregrina · 19/12/2019 19:23

"So don't hold your breath."

Spot on as far as spending in the north will be concerned.
Then all the guff about making Britain great again - this needs investment in skills and training, plus infrastructure and it's not likely to happen.

Oh dear another MN Momentum thread that cant accept Corbyn isn't the messiah.

“Govt appear to have ditched Lord Dubs amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill to continue to give refugee children sanctuary post-Brexit.”
That is so sad, these are children and need protection.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 19/12/2019 20:54

Oh dear another MN Momentum thread that cant accept Corbyn isn't the messiah

Absolutely

I mean that’s exactly how it works isnt it...anyone who would like to keep the government to account and doesnt adore every single tory policy must definitely be a corbynista and a member of momentum

Hopefully this tribalism bollocks will stop eventually...certainly didnt feel this bad a while back

Alsohuman · 19/12/2019 20:54

This thread’s got fuck all to do with Corbyn - who will, thankfully, soon be gone. It’s about holding Johnson’s government to account, as you’d know had you taken the trouble to read it @Walkingdeadfangirl.

ForalltheSaints · 19/12/2019 20:57

I always feel sorry for Her Majesty the Queen having to read out the speech. Surely in this day and age we could end this charade, and just have her open parliament with a short 'welcome and blessings on this parliament' type of address. Then the PM or Leader of the House could make the announcement about planned bills.

HeIenaDove · 19/12/2019 21:01

@Walkingdeadfangirl Arent you on minimum wage?

ssd · 19/12/2019 21:03

Interesting if she is.

I am, that's why I'd never vote tory I can't afford to.

HeIenaDove · 19/12/2019 21:04

Because thats what you said to John Mcdonnell on the webchat. I remember being surprised as it didnt chime with your posting history.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/12/2019 21:06

It’s about holding Johnson’s government to account
{double take} did you type that with a straight face?
Having read the thread and the hundreds like it over the election/past 3 years ... its not about stopping Brexit its about stopping a 'no deal'.
aka its not about hatred & Boris bashing its about 'holding our government to account'.

Pull the other one, it has bells on it.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 19/12/2019 21:08

promises to stay well clear

Epic fail

HeIenaDove · 19/12/2019 21:08

Heres the post....................

Walkingdeadfangirl Fri 06-Dec-19 00:01:53
Hello John,

"I would like to know, why are you planning on giving very wealthy women born in 1955 tens of thousands of pounds. But you are giving minimum wage working class women like me, born in 1956, NOTHING.

You claim to be for the many but it sounds like you are the party for the rich and will hammer the working class.

In the past I have voted for Blair but its very unlikely I would ever vote Labour under Corbyn (I just cant afford to).

Thank you"

MaxNormal · 19/12/2019 21:09

I don't see many Corbyn fans on here, as anyone who had RTFT would be aware of.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/12/2019 21:12

HeIenaDove Not sure what your point is, other than to bully me off this thread. As most leavers have been, off almost all Brexit threads on MN over the past 3 years.

ssd · 19/12/2019 21:13

I liked Corbyn. I didn't like what happened. I think he spoke a lot of sense but a lot of it was washed away in the media. He appealed to young people. I feel more upset that he let them down.
