UCAS utterly unfair

Iwasneveragoddess · 17/12/2019 18:25

My third child is filling out his UCAS form and as happened with his sister he has to put the highest earner in the household on the form, which will affect his loan, this isn’t me it’s my DH who is not father to any of my children.

He is still paying maintenance for his own children and is not financially responsible for mine, how on earth is this fair?

dd couldn't do devereuxs insane schedule because she's in the first team netball so is training 4 days a week from 6-9. Also she likes going out with her mates a few times a week. I suppose I pay for that, I do not resent it in the slightest. Most of her friends do similar.

Fine if you just do social sports I suppose.

Devereux1 · 19/12/2019 19:48

Trewser
GrinGrin Oh the insecurity! We've got a Hyacinth Bucket in our midst I see.

Trewser · 19/12/2019 19:52

Well, I doubt Hyacinth Bucket knew much about first team sport at uni so it's not the best analogy.

Trewser · 19/12/2019 19:54

I have to say, as an employer myself, I would feel for you having to stack shelves 4 nights a week but I'm not sure what it would add to your application. I suppose it shows tenacity.

Devereux1 · 19/12/2019 19:58

Trewser I bet you send out Christmas family newsletters, proudly announcing how Little Princess Trewser has made the first netball team and can bounce a ball around a court.

Thank you thank you for such a laugh, you are just comedy script funny!! Bye bye!
GrinGrinGrin

Trewser · 19/12/2019 20:09

Actually, she's severely dyslexic so has had to work very hard to get where she is and the fact that she's good at sport helped to get her place at uni, so if I did have a newsletter I would probably sing it from the rooftops yes!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 19/12/2019 20:11

Devereux1 Er, you know when I said "devote significant time to sport"? That level, as described by Trewser, is exactly what I meant. I just didn't see much point in mentioning it before. You're really looking daft here.

JustASmallTownCurl · 20/12/2019 09:55

@CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind

Well this thread isnt really selling the benefits of a university education is it. Thank fuck I'm ill educated and lazy and irresponsible and can lie in bed eating Toffifee watching people Argue On The Internet

Hahaha I did go to university and I agree with you. So I'd like to join #TeamClose. But a temporary membership for now, I don't fully trust anyone who likes Toffifee 😉

ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo · 20/12/2019 18:46

You heard it here everyone, don’t give your children any food! If they’ve any gumption they’ll find their own! You mustn’t spend money on children, lest they become feckless useless lumps, unable to respect anyone or turn up to work more then twice!

Anyway...!

I didn’t work at university and somehow managed to get a decent degree from a RG uni and a good job. And I do turn up to work!

CloseEncountersOfTheTerfKind · 20/12/2019 19:02

But @JustASmallTownCurl (good name btw) there's so much fun in Toffifee! I bet you don't like Ferrero Rocher too, do you?

You're not in my team. Off you pop with your poor taste in chocolate treats.

Wink
ferrier · 20/12/2019 19:35

RE. armed forces -
He won't be paying out any more than if he was at home with you. All the time he is away , he is eating free, and having his accommodation covered.

Where the hell does that idea come from? Armed forces pay for their accommodation and their food when on base - and both are pretty shite.

I'm glad others have addressed the issue of uni students 'leeching' off their parents Hmm. Nope ... we supported our dc to get the best grades they could without the stress of working, when appropriate. Luckily it worked out well ... no sign of employers deeming them lightweight or somehow inferior to those who worked their way through uni.

Iwasneveragoddess · 20/12/2019 19:43

ferrier

Quite - you are very right about the accommodation and the food.

I don't want to derail this thread, but a final point about parents paying for adults to study - it is very noticeable to us employers when a graduate has worked through university and been self sufficient, and those who have sat on their arses and taken their parent's money

The latter group doesn't last, are infantile in their behaviour and attitude, they crumble unless they are hand held through everything, experienced staff can't bear to work with them, and they dominate the group that doesn't progress or we let go after a probation period

OMG. You really need to read and listen more about what goes on in business today

Bit late to the party but I checked at work today and this is categorically not true at my employer. I checked the current grad intake and some of the previous and I absolutely cannot tell who was supported by their parents.
They are not infantile and us experienced staff enjoy working with all of them and are oblivious to how their degree was funded. Please do not generalise, your experience is clearly different to mine.

I fucking LOVE Fererro Rocher, I'm not a psychopath Grin

BerwickLad · 21/12/2019 19:03

I also love fererro rocher. Not as much as I love devereux's fantasy football timetable though. And how s/he has the ability to distinguish between students who have parental support and those who don't. Even though working doesn't necessarily mean that parents don't help.

Speaking for myself, the inflated tuition fees/scaling back of living expenses came in when my kids were young so I've had a bit of time to adjust. I do feel for anyone who hasn't had this lead time or who hasn't got spare cash to put aside. We got evicted and made homeless around the time student finance changed (bad thing) but got housing association accommodation as a result (good thing) which obviously meant I've been paying less rent for years and have mostly put the difference into savings for my kids. But actually even with that I'm not convinced that spending that money on student life is the best use of it for them - not because I don't want to support them, but because they'll only have that money once and it's taken me years to put it together, so maybe it's better if they put it towards a future house deposit and work while at college. I certainly wouldn't put what I've managed to save up towards tuition, so am loathe to put it towards living expenses.

The word snowflake used in the context in which its been used on this thread tells me all i need to know

And i really don’t understand why some posters dont get that there can be very many different experiences of degrees, work and imterviews

Im sure that some interviews would take in to account the the applicant did not work through uni...and i know that other interviewers wouldn't care as long as the interviews and psychometric tests were good

If a student can get work and still get a good degree that’s awesome and im sure that would help in future life, but sometimes its not that easy

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/12/2019 19:53

This is great

It is

I always enjoy it when a thread goes off into a lot of unprovable anecdotes Smile

(I dont really...Grin)

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/12/2019 20:03

I fucking LOVE Fererro Rocher, I'm not a psychopath

Wait

Is that a sign?? Explains a lot Sad

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/12/2019 20:25

Oh hell, I don't like Ferraro Rocher... I am forced to accept that I am, in fact, a deranged psychopath after all.

I'm mad keen on marzipan, Lebkuchen, and supermarket own-brand versions of After Eights. Does that salvage it?

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/12/2019 20:26

Why own brand?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/12/2019 20:34

Nestlé boycott. I'm that kind of snowflake. Grin

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/12/2019 20:37

Oooohhhh

I getcha!!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 21/12/2019 20:42

I'm here all week, making Jeremy Clarkson throw up in his mouth a bit.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/12/2019 20:44

😀

doublebarrellednurse · 21/12/2019 20:49

Should they ignore that household income then?

Cause I could see a lot of remarried women suddenly stopping work around entry time if that was the case.
