This is my Christmas song, Christmas starts when I hear this song. Kirsty MacColl sounds fabulous.

It’s all over the newspapers again about the outrage.

Shane MacGowan has explained a million times what the word faggot means in his life and this song. There’s no harm in the song

AIBU that outrage at this word finishes and everyone should all sing along together to a great tune

Isn’t Brad Pitt in the video for this all time classic?

Kirsty McColl, what a talent she was.

charis · 19/12/2019 07:13

I think it's Matt Damon as a copper. Love it but neither faggot nor slut ever sat comfortably with me...

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 19/12/2019 07:21

All that being said, I think there is a case for the words slut and faggot to be bleeped on radio.

The version being played on Magic does have "slut" beeped out and the line containing "faggot" has been changed to "you're cheap and you're haggered"

bookmum08 · 19/12/2019 07:24

It's Matt Dillon as the cop in the video. He has said that Shane Macgowan was so drunk when filming he had to be held up between takes.

spingly · 19/12/2019 08:42

@Sl1pkn0t being homosexual does not mean you can't be a snowflake, they're not mutually exclusive.

The winds great leave the poignant and meaningful lyrics as they are.

spingly · 19/12/2019 08:50

*words are

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 19/12/2019 09:10

I love the idea of two drunks having a polite argument.

You're a homeless person
You're a bad person
You're an old dirty womanon junk
Lying there almost dead
On a drip in that bed

You naughty boy
You bad man
You cheap lousy Irish insult that we can’t use, because some English don’t permit us to
Happy Christmas your posterior
I pray God
It's our last

Now, is there anyone that is offended that I e forgotten about. Oh, I changed ‘bum’ as it’s usually a reference to someone who is homeless, but I don’t see any of the professionally offended up in arms about that. Don’t you care about a derogatory term for the homeless? I’m shocked at you. I’m away to feel superior, as I’m the only one to stand up for them. walks off feeling like smuggy McSmugFace

Hohonoshow · 19/12/2019 10:03

I looked for a response from the singer when I saw this thread and the one I read didn't seem to be implying the word faggot was not offensive, but rather that it was spoken in character, by a fairly offensive person.
I think it's the cheeriness of the people singing along to the sad song that is the issue not the song itself. Remember that old song "Streets of London"? It's like people singing a weird hyped up happy version of that.

Deadjinglebellringer · 19/12/2019 10:09

If she was calling a gay person a faggot that would be a slur but she is not so I don't get the angst. However, it could easily be changed to braggart, for the snowflakes.

Samcro · 19/12/2019 10:10

i listened to it yesterday and she said maggot.

Pumperthepumper · 19/12/2019 10:26

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I’m not English.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 19/12/2019 10:28

because some English

I know you find context difficult, Pumperthepumper, but note the some

Pumperthepumper · 19/12/2019 10:36

I wasn’t referring to your song, you’ve accused people of being English and xenophobic several times on this thread because they don’t agree with faggot being played on the radio. I’m just pointing out another thing you’re wrong about.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 19/12/2019 10:39

I’m just pointing out another thing you’re wrong about.

Oh no! You’ve hurt my feelings, I need to ban what you’re saying to me. Or I could just shrug my shoulders and wait and see what you next get offended about. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Deadjinglebellringer · 19/12/2019 10:52

She says maggot and faggot samcro 'you scumbag you maggot you cheap lousy faggot'

newname12 · 19/12/2019 13:30

From Roald Dahl's poem "Cinderella". Often studied by children.

Should this be edited too?

The Prince cried, 'Who's this dirty slut?
'Off with her nut! Off with her nut!'
Just then, all in a blaze of light,
The Magic Fairy hove in sight,
Her Magic Wand went swoosh and swish!
'Cindy! 'she cried, 'come make a wish!

Pumperthepumper · 19/12/2019 14:04

Yes.

Sl1pkn0t · 19/12/2019 16:06

No school would read that poem to children with the word slut in.

misspiggy19 · 19/12/2019 17:10

^He is pretty thick to be fair.

Taken from an article where he described the Pet Shop Boys:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/12/16/fairytale-of-new-york-shane-macgowan-lyric-offensive-the-pogues/amp/

MacGowan has described the duo as “faggots with synths” and “two queens and a drum machine.”

Ontheboardwalk · 19/12/2019 23:48

Not seen this before but if The George is ok with it so am I

OP posts:
MiniGuinness · 20/12/2019 01:36

I have never seen that before Boardwalk. Lovely lovely George. He knew it was not a slur in this context.

LadyChatterleysHoover · 20/12/2019 02:49

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I'm very hurt by your version of the song Angry. You've seemingly made no changes to the sixth line which I've heard being sung by hordes of rowdy drunken gentiles. Yes, that dreadful slur, "the rare old mountain Jew".

Sure, people say it's a different context but that's no consolation to my ds who identifies as a Jew.

Freesunglasses · 20/12/2019 07:15

How dare she call George a faggot! Then again he doesn't represent all gay people, only those snowflakeswho choose not to be offended by a word in a song.

Freesunglasses · 20/12/2019 07:16

Well that was put wrong, must wait till I've woken up to go in Mumsnet Grin

Pumperthepumper · 20/12/2019 10:06

Those of you who are convinced that faggot is a perfectly reasonable word to use in this context, could you name some modern day faggots using the same context? Just so I get a better idea of who it actually relates to. Ideally in this format: David X - Faggot. Thanks 👍
