The school denied them crackers

Primary school had a fake vote yesterday (only KS2 voted)

They voted in majority for the Green Party...

Today was Christmas dinner and Christmas jumper today.

Usually they get crackers with their dinners but were told today that because over half of them voted in the Green Party they wouldn't be getting crackers with their dinner.

Aibu to think the school shouldn't have done this? Seems a bit mean to me 🤷‍♀️

We still had crackers and the bloody mess they made was irritating to say the least. Not the best way to make the point though - kinda heavy-handed. Unless it was in the Green manifesto? That would make more sense.

Over the last month my school have been saving all crisp bags from packed lunches. They have filled 4 bin liners so far. Next week the ‘eco council’ is going to tip the bags all over the floor in the hall and hold a vote whether to ‘ban’ them from packed lunches from January. I like this idea (and our school
Nurse likes it even more!)

@exLtEveDallas one of our local schools collect crisp packets and recycled them through the terracycle system. Might be an option for your school rather than banning crisps in lunch boxes.

They also collect biscuit wrappers, bread bags and pens all to go and be recycled. They get paid by weight I think.

I deny my family crackers too, have done for ages! I decorated some favour boxes and they come out every year with a few chocolate truffles, a couple of lebkuchen or a mini waxed cheese truckle popped inside...

EmilyStar · 14/12/2019 09:22

I don’t believe for a minute that the schools decision to not have crackers had anything to do with the children’s vote.

It would be ridiculously poor planning to decide to base the cracker shopping on how the children voted, and then leave the voting to the day before the Christmas meal. Bearing in mind that it’s a whole schools worth of crackers!

No, they’ll have decided ages ago to not do Christmas crackers. And it’s terrible communication to give the kids the idea it’s all their fault.

Booksandwine80 · 14/12/2019 09:30

I’m sure they will get over it Grin

MintyMabel · 14/12/2019 09:45

would have been better all round to give them all the pros and cons. My dd is no Greta but she is aware and concerned of environmental issues so she would have understood and I'm pretty sure the kids would have thought about coming up with an environmentally friendly alternative if they were given the chance..

That isn’t how voting works. The school have listened to the students. That’s a good thing.

Your ten year old has learned a great lesson.

Topseyt · 14/12/2019 10:06

I think that is a great idea couldn't get too bothered by it.

Crackers are a ridiculous waste of paper, cardboard and plastic. My parents never bought them and I never have either.

Billie87 · 14/12/2019 10:36

I read this and thought you meant a crackers to eat 😂😂 I thought gosh that is a bit mean.
But now I understand it means crackers you pull (!) I think that’s a great idea. Shows kids that who you vote for has consequences, good and bad.

BillywilliamV · 14/12/2019 10:40

I'm not having crackers this year, £3 secret Santa instead .

ClashCityRocker · 14/12/2019 10:59

I suspect someone has buggered up and forgot to buy the crackers...

... And then come up with a Cunning Plan.

diddl · 14/12/2019 11:18

Seems odd that they didn't just not do crackers.

Would kids have really noticed/cared if there just hadn't been any?

Surprised that schools still bother with them-it really is just throwing money away!

AJPTaylor · 14/12/2019 11:24

At dds lower school they made them in arts and crafts and teacher put a sweet or 2 In them and each pupil wrote a joke on a slip of paper.dunno if that is more or less eco friendly but they remember it fondly

Sawwhet · 14/12/2019 12:09

So what? Crackers are awful for the environment with their crappy plastic toys that go in the bin. Poor darlings how will they cope? They'll have depression by the time they're in secondary hevause of cracker-gate.

CarolinaPink · 14/12/2019 12:11

Grin A great lesson in how choices have consequences!

MayMiracle · 14/12/2019 12:18

Our primary school is also not allowing crackers this year, to reduce plastic waste.

They are asking instead for people to make their own, and include a pencil etc

CalamityJune · 14/12/2019 12:33

I spent half this thread thinking the OP meant Jacob's crackers and thinking of all the single use plastic Grin

wanderings · 14/12/2019 12:43

I hated crackers (still do), because I was afraid of the bangs. I spent many a Christmas meal hiding in another room while the crackers were pulled. I’d have been delighted not to have them!

Most likely scenario:
Decision made not to have crackers (on cost or environmental grounds)
On the day one or more children notice and ask why.
Response is along the lines of this is a positive thing because of the environmental impact and that it is in line with the previous day's vote was for the Green Party.

As pp say, children should understand that votes have consequences. Also, that environmental action should be about doing things themselves, not just about making a lot of noise about what other people are or are not doing.
