The school denied them crackers

Primary school had a fake vote yesterday (only KS2 voted)

They voted in majority for the Green Party...

Today was Christmas dinner and Christmas jumper today.

Usually they get crackers with their dinners but were told today that because over half of them voted in the Green Party they wouldn't be getting crackers with their dinner.

Aibu to think the school shouldn't have done this? Seems a bit mean to me 🤷‍♀️

@Ski4130 a table game a chocolate is an excellent idea btw!

What a good idea - it’s not political but environmental. Teach the children early and hopefully they will start to make some changes.

churchandstate · 14/12/2019 07:49

They need to learn that their vote comes with consequences, don’t they?

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2019 07:52

I sincerely doubt the teacher said it was because of th kids who voted green. There is usually a huge difference between what was said and what was heard.

Scrooge1234 · 14/12/2019 07:54

@Bluntness100 definitely possible

How can the decision not be be right? Kids need to learn votes have consequences. At 10 years old I hope it becomes a memorable lesson for them

crankysaurus · 14/12/2019 07:56

Aren't schools meant to be apolitical? That's just taught a whole bunch of them not to vote for a certain party. I'm a member of the Green Party, i work in the environmental industry, it doesn't mean you have to stop having fun!

EmmaGellerGreen · 14/12/2019 07:56

I’d be curious to ask what they wouldn’t get if they voted Tory.

crankysaurus · 14/12/2019 07:58

But Bluntness, even if what's heard is not what was (meant to be) said, it's what's understood that's important.

SnugglySnerd · 14/12/2019 07:58

Good for them. I'm sick of how much plastic tat sold at school fayres, given away as little prizes etc. It is killing our environment which will affect the youngest the most so I'm delighted to hear this.
At my dcs nursery they all made paper hats to wear for the xmas party which was cheap, fun and more environmentally friendly than crackers.

NoParticularPattern · 14/12/2019 08:00

Took me two pages to work out that they weren’t just eating lumps of cheese without crackers 😂😂.

I suspect this is one of those “child paraphrases actual situation” situations.

Acheypelvis · 14/12/2019 08:00

Ah just clicked it was Christmas crackers. Not like crackers and cheese! Was so confused. Haven't had my coffee yet

Acheypelvis · 14/12/2019 08:01

Cross post with pattern!

GrandmaSharksDentures · 14/12/2019 08:03

Was the vote on the same day as the lunch? If so, either:

  1. no crackers were ever bought & the school lies about why there were no crackers or
  2. crackers have been bought & will either be binned immediately or used & binned next year (not really helping reduce landfill)
Scrooge1234 · 14/12/2019 08:07

@saltysally my ten year old felt like she'd ruined it for the rest... my six year old doesn't get politics at all so no lessons learnt there...

As someone else just said, making some paper hats would have been a nice environmentally friendly alternative that the kids would have enjoyed.

@GrandmaSharksDentures the vote was Thursday. The results and Xmas dinner was Friday

I've bought 100% recyclable crackers this year. It would have been better for the school to do this or get the kids to make them. To show them you don't have to miss out and still have nice things.
I suspect this was an excuse for the school to not spend money as it was so close to the vote. They would have already bought them.

Queenofpi · 14/12/2019 08:12

After the crackers vs crackers penny dropped (so glad it wasn't just me!) I formulated a theory. I bet the school had already decided not to have crackers because WWGD (loving the new acronym! 😂) and when the majority vote from the kids came back green, they thought it would be a good way to pitch it. Of course, it's majorly backfired, and what they should have said is "We already decided not to have crackers because yada yada yada and we're sure you'll be pleased about it as you are all so environmentally conscious." That would have prevented your poor daughter's guilt trip.

ClutterbuckFarm · 14/12/2019 08:12

It’s a good life lesson. Not every consequence of your actions is spelled out in advance. Hopefully it will make them think through their voting choices when they do it for real in a few years time.

OkOkWhatsNext · 14/12/2019 08:15

100% the school were never going to have crackers for environmental reasons. There is a big movement to not use them this year because of the waste. Lots of discussion on PTA pages! Our school has managed to find some eco-friendly ones that donate money to charity so we’re using those. Sure the school were never going to use them and explained why, referring back to the vote result too, it’s just got muddled in the kids’ understanding.

Scrooge1234 · 14/12/2019 08:18

@fuzzymoon maybe there had been some propaganda on Thursday to get the kids to vote green in preparation for no crackers 😁 it's quite easy to get a bunch of 10 year olds to vote green when you mention a suffering turtle.

OP posts:
fligglepige · 14/12/2019 08:23

We never had crackers at school. I don't appear to have suffered any lasting psychological damage.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/12/2019 08:25

This thread has really made me think about the waste of resources that crackers are. I haven't brought any yet this year and as a result of this reflection probably won't, but do want the "snap". Am not doing a Margo (!! Lol) so off to Google cracker snaps - can just imagine my family's faces when they see a snap on the table rather than a whole cracker 🤣.

Straycatstrut · 14/12/2019 08:30

Yeah they voted with good intention and immediately got a negative. My son (Yr3) would have done this too and then thought twice.

Should have been followed up with a positive alternative.

Straycatstrut · 14/12/2019 08:35

Can't you recycle crackers anyway? I thought they were all cardboard and paper? Hmm

I don't think I've bought them in years!
