The school denied them crackers

Primary school had a fake vote yesterday (only KS2 voted)

They voted in majority for the Green Party...

Today was Christmas dinner and Christmas jumper today.

Usually they get crackers with their dinners but were told today that because over half of them voted in the Green Party they wouldn't be getting crackers with their dinner.

Aibu to think the school shouldn't have done this? Seems a bit mean to me 🤷‍♀️

Once I'd eventually twigged you were talking about the kind of crackers that you pull open and not the kind you eat with cheese Blush

I think (if it is that actual reason, which I doubt very much), that it is an excellent idea. Crackers really are environmentally unfriendly - load of packaging around some plastic tat that actually has no use for anything.

DocusDiplo · 13/12/2019 22:05

Ohhhh!!!! I get it now!! Those crackers!!

Scrooge1234 · 13/12/2019 22:07

@sproutsandparsnips yeah I mean I'm all for the no crackers and my dd is also far more aware of environmental issues than I ever was...
I think it's just the way It was made out like it was the ones who voted fault...

Whatever lesson they were hoping to pass, my dd felt disappointed and regretted voting green because everyone was sad about it.

I think if the school had just said ' we're not doing it this year because of the environment' I would totally support that

Illcallbacklater · 13/12/2019 22:09

I was trying to work out why crackers were so bad for the environment and why kids were so upset about it... Then it clocked you were on about Christmas crackers. I'm off to bed, I clearly need it!

Orangedaisy · 13/12/2019 22:09

I got id’ed today buying crackers in Waitrose [misses point of thread].

StealthPolarBear · 13/12/2019 22:11

"I think if the school had just said ' we're not doing it this year because of the environment' I would totally support that"
That would be a dictatorship. What you got was democracy.

TooleyVanDooley · 13/12/2019 22:12

Yeah, I was several posts in before I realised it wasn’t cheese and crackers

TooleyVanDooley · 13/12/2019 22:14

I think it’s good for them to understand that there are consequences to how you vote

Scrooge1234 · 13/12/2019 22:14

Sounds like I could have improved the title lol

OP posts:
sproutsandparsnips · 13/12/2019 22:16

I get what you're saying op but actually I think it's a good lesson. When you vote your decision can impact on everyone. I.e. The fact that more than half voted Green will mean that everyone must abide by their policies. Perhaps a lesson in democracy rather than the issues per se.

ReanimatedSGB · 13/12/2019 22:17

It would certainly be easy for DC to interpret it as a punishment for voting Green, as it sounds like this is how it was presented to them. Which is dodgy as fuck. Because school staff shouldn't be so dimwitted as not to realised that presenting it in that way is likely to lead to the kids who voted something other than Green having a go at the kids who did vote Green (whether or not they cared that much about crackers).

ReanimatedSGB · 13/12/2019 22:18

In fact, this sounds like school staff deciding to do a 'Hah, see how much you stupid kids admire Greta Thunberg now when we demonstrate to you how much fun the silly little cow wants to take away from you...'

Scrooge1234 · 13/12/2019 22:21

@TooleyVanDooley for sure, I'm all for that but it seems like the way the lesson landed was perceived as a punishment for voting to save the planet which is what the kids thought... Bare in mind the school were going to do crackers but decided to not hand Them out because of how the kids voted

I don't know, it just seems a bit shit to me to tell the kids in years R-2 that they're not getting crackers now because half of year 3-6 decided to vote to save the planet

OP posts:
Scrooge1234 · 13/12/2019 22:28

And The years 3-6 who decided to vote didn't feel happy... they felt guilty.

Is the Xmas dinner really the time to bring in fucking politics? Can't the kids just enjoy it (with or without crackers) without half feeling guilty that they ruined it for the rest. Because yeah we as adults are fully aware that crackers are shite but rightly or wrongly my kids love a cracker at Xmas and were excited about it.

Like I said above, I'd be all for the school taking environmental measures (even though they were originally planning on giving crackers) and making the kids aware of them... But to blame a few on this decision seems a bit shitty to me.

MutedUser · 13/12/2019 22:31

It’s fantastic idea our school have banned Xmas cards too each child has to send one to the class if they want. Think the school newsletter said it would save 12,000 cards done this way. Brilliant .

Schuyler · 13/12/2019 22:34

They’re only crackers, do they bring that much joy and happiness to small children really?

Scrooge1234 · 13/12/2019 22:35

@MutedUser that's a great idea!

Cautionsharpblade · 13/12/2019 22:35

Did they get a vegan dinner too? That’ll teach them Grin

queenMab99 · 13/12/2019 22:35

They need to learn that activism can mean deprivation of unnecessary luxuries. I tell my grandchildren that leaving unnecessary lights on , kills polar bearsGrin

Readthisearlier · 13/12/2019 22:37

Brilliant teaching.

Butchyrestingface · 13/12/2019 22:37

Thread title is hilarious.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 13/12/2019 22:38

At least they still got a school dinner! Good thing they didn't vote Tory Grin

DeathStare · 13/12/2019 22:41

I think someone forgot to order the crackers! To have them in for today they would have had to have ordered them before yesterday - and if they had ordered them there would be no point at all not giving them out. Methinks they're using the vote as an excuse to hide a forgotten cracker order. And very funny it is too

AutumnRose1 · 13/12/2019 22:42

I think it’s quite good in terms of learning about actions and consequences.

fairislecable · 13/12/2019 22:43

I am very impressed and feel this is forward thinking and obviously a WWGD moment (what would Greta do) Grin
