To have cried!

I'm 19. DS is 18 months.

I live with DP & DS. I work hard, I have 2 jobs. DP works too. So, no we don't just sit on our arses, but we still need UC help to pay the bills. I want(ed) to train and work in the NHS. I'm also interested in politics.

So yeah, when I woke up this morning and saw the election result I cried. Austerity is very real, it's not a joke or a fictional story. With the way it is right now, I cannot afford an education. I cannot afford to study for a career. I'm stuck where I am.

Sadder still, others have it far worse. There are children in poverty, a homelessness crisis, the NHS is crumbling when people need it more than ever. I can respect democracy. I can respect the vote. But I have to ask, for people like me - what now?Sad

More than you - obviously

Clearly not of you think they can all go to hospital by car. That just plain stupid.

OrangeTwirl · 13/12/2019 18:27

What really concerns me is thatorangeseems to have implied that she is somehow involved in making serious decisions about prioritising patients on 999 calls. But she is 100% that broken legs don't prevent you sitting in a car... um... yikes

You haven't said what your position is re broken legs...other than some garbled post about fires and painted walls... I rest my case

TheBlueStocking · 13/12/2019 18:28

Hope the Daily Mail is reading this so that they can print that OrangeTwirl has solved the issue of people with a serious break to a major bone requiring medical treatment. Hallelujah!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 13/12/2019 18:28

DSs played rugby for years. The broken legs I saw there could not have gone by car. Only a stupid person would have tried it.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 18:30

Why are you still going on about broken legs? It's a broken leg record and so far from the point of the thread. Jesus, enough with the broken legs. I know you're keen to show off your dubious knowledge on the subject, but really.

And I have clarified my position and did so fairly speedily tbh 🤷‍♀️.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 13/12/2019 18:33

A load of cold hard bitches on here. Shame on you,

caringcarer · 13/12/2019 18:35

Your child will be eligible for free childcare soon so that should make you better off. You must have realised when you have a baby before you finished your education things would be tough until baby in childcare. This government is helping you pay bills by paying you UC. They are adding 50p per hour to minimum wage in budget and every year until it is £10.50 per hour. Also the NIC will be less soon too. If Labour had got in it sounds like they would have given you everything for free but as they were borrowing to give it to you the debt would be passed on to your child and even possibly grandchildren. Nothing in life is free.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 18:35

Amen mistlewoe. And they seem rather loud and proud about it 🤢.

caringcarer · 13/12/2019 18:38

Tory government are bringing back the nurse bursary. Make sure you are ready to apply OP.

Many rugby players have attended A+E with broken legs without problem
... once it's pointed out that an ambulance will be hours because there are greater priorities to deal with. Never mind. You'll live and learn... How many ambulance crews do you think are stationed in your area at any one time? Why do you think a broken bone would take priority?

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 18:44

Jesus, it is not the point. You aren't sounding as clever as you think you are.

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 18:45

Goodness me, this debate about legs is making me want to break mine.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 18:47

Surprising that someone who is so well acquainted with the pressures on emergency services and how limited they currently are is so disinterested in the ACTUAL CONVERSATION, thay public services being cut could affect any one of us and in fact could be dangerous.

Do you find being callous and lacking in empathy is a good thing in your line of work?

Sandaled · 13/12/2019 18:48

@OrangeTwirl I'm guessing you work in the control room for ambulance, what would you suggest to someone who phones and exclaims that they are unable to bend their leg at all without causing excruciating pain? That they stick their leg out of the car window? Or poke it out of the sun roof of a taxi if they have no one to drive them but are rendered unable to drive? I see why par for the course a break wouldn't necessarily warrant one, if someone is able to physically get into a vehicle without causing more damage, but do you just tell them all no? I'm guessing only if they're desperate will they wait hours rather than make their own way in anyway. I agree they shouldn't be used as a taxi service, but surely not all breaks be equal.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 13/12/2019 18:48

Yes. Including my DS. However, many could not. You said you don't need an ambulance for a broken leg. You are wrong.

Why do you think a broken bone would take priority?

Nowhere did I say it was a priority. Please point out where I did. You stated, quite clearly, that "Nobody needs an ambulance for a broken leg". Nobody. Not that they shouldn't take priority, that nobody needed one.

How many ambulance crews do you think are stationed in your area at any one time?

How is that relevant?

I've watched the fly on the wall documentary about the ambulance service. I know what strain it's under (probably worse than it is portrayed). I'm not stupid. That doesn't mean that nobody with a broken leg needs an ambulance.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 13/12/2019 18:50

I'm off. This isn't what the thread was about, it's been derailed.

peaceanddove · 13/12/2019 18:51

Having a baby at any age severely curtails your freedom and some choices for years. I didn't have my first child until I was in my thirties, with a professional career behind me, a great DH and supportive family. It still shocked me to the core how such a tiny baby suddenly ruled my life 24/7.

If the OP chose to have her baby whilst still at school age then it's ridiculous for her to complain that her options are now very limited at 19. Did she think a baby would increase her academic potential and open career doors for her?

Professional women in their thirties, with more than ten years of success behind them STILL find that having a baby can impede their careers and impact their finances.

It's not cruel or nasty to point this out. It's life.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 18:53

Fucking broken fucking legs though. Debate of the fucking century.

Sorry op. Massive derail. I did attempt to get it back on track.

Hope you get to do your course.

FWIW, I did a degree in politics and it was ace. One of the best subjects around, not that I'm biased Xmas Wink. Very little talk of broken legs too!

Kittygirl47 · 13/12/2019 18:54

The broken leg analogy is ridiculous. The OP CHOSE to have a child at barely 17/18 and is now bleating that she isn’t getting more free money to fund her poor choices!

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 18:56

peaceanddove

And if it shocked you, in your thirties, how do you think it felt to an 18 year old?

sauvignonblancplz · 13/12/2019 19:03

@peaceanddove and knowing the difficulty of having a baby you don’t think we should support this young mum?
No slap it up her ehhh? Silly silly girl, suffer .

Sandaled · 13/12/2019 19:04

I'm really shocked at the reaction to someone wanting to increase the opportunities for themselves, by accessing support which is available to anyone anyway. Really odd.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 13/12/2019 19:05

OP, there are positives in this;

-the conservatives are raising the minimum wage, so if that applies to you, then you’ll be better off
-the conservatives are planning to invest extensively in science and technology. If you are interested in science this could create exciting opportunities for you.
-the conservatives are moving away from austerity towards investment. But they are not promising magical unicorns which means a more stable economy and jobs market for you. It also means a better future for your child compared with Labour raising the country’s debt levels.

I hope you can find a way to study science or to obtain training in an area that leads to a job. The future really is bright, even if things are hard right now.

OrangeTwirl · 13/12/2019 19:06

I agree! Some people think the world owes them everything. There are priorities in all forms of life. Broken legs are not a priority for the NHS. Education for over 18's is not a priority for the Government. If only everyone took responsibility for themselves...instead of putting the burden of their lifestyle choices on others.

HiandHello · 13/12/2019 19:07

OP I’m sorry I honestly don’t understand how people could have done this.
I’m in the top 5% and would never ever vote Tory. I feel so ashamed of how this country has voted.
