Genuinely feeling mortified for Jo Swinson

Wow that was kick in the balls if ever I have seen one. Jesus how absolutely humiliating. I was curling up just watching the footage last night, and then the clip about her claims that she will be PM.

Just mortifying on every level.

I hope she is able to leave with a shred of dignity, because I am not sure she is ever going to recover her creditability after last night's carnage. She was seriously out of touch, and she paid the ultimate price.

No sympathy from me, I thought it was an excellent result.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/12/2019 11:42

She was hopeless, quite honestly!

leckford · 13/12/2019 11:42

The problem with MN people is that they appear to mostly live in the London bubble. Often concerned with issues that are of little concern to the rest of the U.K., the racism obsession, the ‘anxiety’ issues, the mental health issues people do have them but not to the extent described on here were they are an excuse for everything. In real life we just get on with it.

adaline · 13/12/2019 11:44

I don't like her, but would not wish that one anyone. All on the world stage too.

She put herself in that position though. She has nobody to blame but herself.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/12/2019 11:47

Doesn’t the SNP also have the same difficulty with the definition of woman? Frying pan, fire really...

CatInTheDaytime · 13/12/2019 11:47

I do feel a bit sorry for anyone being so publicly humiliated.

She did deserve it, and I hope she can reflect on the reasons. Including exactly why it's so very hard to define women and biological sex when you DO know the answer but you've let yourself be brainwashed by a damaging dead-end ideology for the sake of being woke.

But it's not all her fault and part of the reason it happened was that a young, inexperienced leader was thrust to the fore because a seriously shafted parliamentary party really didn't have any better options, and part of what she's most inexperienced in is clear, straightforward thinking and a genuine understanding and contemplation of women's rights.

Johnson and Corbyn also deserve to lose their seats and to be publicly humiliated for their many appalling failings.

HandsOffMyRights · 13/12/2019 11:48

No sympathy after she rolled back women's rights by refusing to admit there are two sexes, that women and girl's rights and safety matter, by prioritising a few deluded men and with her homophobic and racist comments comparing men who self ID as women with lesbians and woc. Clue, the latter two are all women, Jo.

I'm delighted she lost. she did it to herself. I hope she recognises our fury and despair, but given her speech her inclusivity excludes women.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 13/12/2019 11:48

That news cheered me up this morning.

zsazsajuju · 13/12/2019 11:48

i would never have voted for her but do feel a bit sorry for her watching her lose her seat on the verge of tears. She is an adult human female (even if she doesnt know it) and I have compassion for her.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 11:51

given her ridiculous views on sex and gender, I’m not sorry she won’t be an MP anymore.

This. My worst nightmare was a hung Parliament with the Lib Dems in coalition, enthusiastically giving away women’s sex-based rights while claiming to be feminists. Johnson is no friend to women, but he’s not an active danger to us. There was no attempt at all from Swinson to listen to the other side of the argument. In fact, women who were concerned were told to fuck off and vote for parties which would accommodate our bigoted values. I imagine at least 149 of her adult human female constituents did exactly that.

midnightmisssuki · 13/12/2019 11:51

She was a lunatic.

PurpleHoodie · 13/12/2019 11:53

"Lordamighty

At least Jo Swinson now knows what a woman is -

an adult human female with a vote"

Your ignorance is showing. No people do not just get on with it. Mental health issues are no joke, and racism is a very real issue. I know firsthand how terrible the suffering
can be, and I'm not in London. A friend's husband appeared to be "getting on" with it until one day last year when he took the dog for a walk then hanged himself from a tree.

I volunteer with two charities that deal with mental health issues in some form. Far more people are struggling than you think. Members of my community who seem strong, confident people are often hiding their misery and their struggles. I've been amazed at who walked through the doors looking for help.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 11:55

But she is an ex-MP with a first class degree in Management from LSE. She’ll be alright. Some consultancy or bank will snap her up.

Yes, she can go and head up the diversity and inclusion strategy in some investment bank or other, championing the bravery of directors who like to dress as a hideous parody of a woman once a week.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 11:55

I see she was self I.Ding as a scottish person once again at the count.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 13/12/2019 11:56

Nah, she couldn't give a flying shit about other women, so she gets fuck all sympathy from me. Reap what you sow.

ClaraThePigeon · 13/12/2019 11:58

I'm not so sure why people seem so confident that it was her attitude towards women and their rights that lost the vote here in East Dunbartonshire, and not her voting record or general lack of interest in her constituency, except during the election campaign. Though she didn't really lose by much. I find a lot of people are still unaware of the issues regarding women's rights and spaces being under attack, or they don't realise the extent of it. Or they simply don't care. The SNP party members who came to my door didn't seem to be aware of it.

DodoPatrol · 13/12/2019 12:00

Can’t get cheerful about this.

I strongly suspect Johnson will come down in favour of trashing women’s rights now that he wont lose votes for it.

I imagine it there were a lot of issues involved. But I’m pretty sure that at least 149 women were persuaded by her stance on gender to vote elsewhere and lose her her seat.

RandomlyChosenName · 13/12/2019 12:01

My reaction was similar to Nicola Stergeon’s.

Quaffy · 13/12/2019 12:02

I don’t believe it had anything to do with Lib Dems’ remain stance or “ignoring 17.4 million people” (don’t 16.1 million people deserve a party to vote for or can they be ignored?). She was ousted by the SNP who are remain.

I have no idea why she lost. I’m not saying it was anything to do with self ID, because I don’t know anything about her constituency or its demographic, I’m saying that’s my reason for not being sorry she’s ousted.

yomommasmomma · 13/12/2019 12:02

Never feel sorry for a politician.
They are all tough as old boots, they know what they sign up for.

PencilsInSpace · 13/12/2019 12:03

I think this was one of her less mortifying public appearances in recent days.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 13/12/2019 12:04

She was the one to back an election in the first place. We wouldn't be in this situation without her.

Xenia · 13/12/2019 12:04

I didn't really follow her much as knew she had no hope of winning nor her party. Hoever on the gender issue I was very pleased Mrs May did not go ahead with changing our current law. our current law is a fair kind and balanced position which allows people to chance gender, over 2 years, have their surgery etc etc.

Labour had committed I believe to self ID so yet again the Tories have had the best policy - not surprising on that and many other fronts as to why we won.
