AIBU?

Genuinely feeling mortified for Jo Swinson

Wow that was kick in the balls if ever I have seen one. Jesus how absolutely humiliating. I was curling up just watching the footage last night, and then the clip about her claims that she will be PM.

Just mortifying on every level.

I hope she is able to leave with a shred of dignity, because I am not sure she is ever going to recover her creditability after last night's carnage. She was seriously out of touch, and she paid the ultimate price.

As an actual feminist (unlike Jo), I don’t take pleasure in seeing a woman torn down, however I agree with the comments in this thread that she badly misjudged lots of things, and given her ridiculous views on sex and gender, I’m not sorry she won’t be an MP anymore.

No I don’t feel in the slightest bit sorry for her. I’m a Lib Dem at heart with some leanings towards Labour but unfortunately the shit show we were presented with as ‘leaders’ for both those parties have led to this. End of.

And I agree that PR would be wonderful and we have a flawed electoral system from that point of view- Lib Dems did increase their votes but not their seats which is a result of our shit system

But the fact is jo Swinson came across really badly, I’ve hardly met a single Lib Dem voter who thinks she’s a good leader. Rather like any sane labour voters think Corbyn is shite.

Just deserts.

No pity from me. She squandered support by talking absolute nonsense about self ID, I am surprised she lost by such a narrow margin.

Hard now to see why she got as much coverage as she did. Like Cleggmania but most people seemed to hate her.

I don't like her, but would not wish that one anyone. All on the world stage too.

Same here and she was my M.P and I really can't bear her and I'm glad that she's gone but part of me still feels a little sorry for her even if I despise her voting record and her attitude towards women. That said she's far from the only candidate/party who was happy to throw women under a bus.

Marleyisme · 13/12/2019 11:25

She put herself on the world stage. Was a hypocrite and thtre women under the bus to get in the world stage.

Tough shit. Not an ounce of sympathy.

She wanted 0.6% of the population to trample the rights of 51% of the population.

It's no surprise that 51% of the population voted against that (or at least 149 of them did).

She failed maths and biology. What woman would vote to lose their rights.

Not a shred of sympathy from me, she was prepared to go against the wishes of over 17 million people who voted for Brexit, also she had no empathy for fellow women but still expected the country to stand behind her. Well deserved defeat in my eyes.

She's not a good candidate and the results reflected that. However, the negative attention she has received has been disproportionate to her male equivalents. So, YANBU to feel sympathy for her in that sense.

I don't rate her at all. But I also felt sorry for her, and the sight of Nicola sturgeon and Diane abbot celebrating her demise wasn't dignified and was unpleasant.

But she did bring a lot on herself, all this "jo Swinsons Lib Dem's" and how she was going to be prime minister, she made it more about her than her party.

Report
BlaueLagune · 13/12/2019 11:28

I voted Libdem but because of Brexit, so had I had the opportunity to vote for another remain party with a chance of winning like the SNP, I might have done.

I didn't like the views on self-ID, either. And unfortunately she just didn't have the presence to be PM.

I do feel sorry for her because she was the only high profile scalp (other than Nigel Dodds in NI) and I don't think she was the SNP's enemy and they didn't really have to target that seat. But she'll probably get a well paid job now (as I think she did before) so will be fine.

I was interested in Nicola Sturgeon's reaction to her unseating. She, Ruth Davidson and Kezia Dugdale all get on well on a personal level. It seems that Nicola S and Jo S do not because I think otherwise her reaction would have been more muted.

No sympathy for her, her voting record is terrible. That and it was deluded to ever think a Lib Dem would ever be a PM after the con/lib dem government.

Marleyisme · 13/12/2019 11:31

Oh and she was daft enough to believe that many people would vote remain in a 2nd referendum that she could convince them to bore for her based only on cancelling Brexit.

She wasn’t very likeable - but ultimately she’s just a woman who just lost her job ... and for that she has some sympathy

How long is it since a party leader lost their seat at a GE? I suppose if you are going to fail, then you might as well do it properly.

I don't take pleasure in her humiliation, but it does give me hope that at least a small part of the electorate has some basic sense. All is not lost.

But she is an ex-MP with a first class degree in Management from LSE. She’ll be alright. Some consultancy or bank will snap her up.

She has Bly herself and her stupid undemocratic ideas to blame. I feel no sympathy, she felt none to 17.4 million voters

I don't feel remotely sorry for her. She was perfectly happy to put women in danger for the sake of the woke vote. That is unforgivable and I'm glad she's history
