Genuinely feeling mortified for Jo Swinson

Wow that was kick in the balls if ever I have seen one. Jesus how absolutely humiliating. I was curling up just watching the footage last night, and then the clip about her claims that she will be PM.

Just mortifying on every level.

I hope she is able to leave with a shred of dignity, because I am not sure she is ever going to recover her creditability after last night's carnage. She was seriously out of touch, and she paid the ultimate price.

As a matter of interest, @7to25, what is Amy Callaghan's position on self-id?

Agree that Swinson had a hard time for her very weird accent, partly Milngavie, partly Bath. Very odd vowel sounds. So as a result she sounded wannabe English to Scottish ears.

I do understand how hard it must be to juggle two young kids, leading your party and being a MP. But her husband is the mobile one without a parliamentary seat. Had she moved them all up here, stuck the kids in local schools and nurseries and been totally up to speed with what's going on in her constituency, things might have been different.

“ Yes, men get mocked for appearance but usually because they are dishevelled. Their appearance is not critiqued to the same extent.”

The reason female figures in public life have more scrutiny put on their appearance is other women. Men really are not interested in what female politicians wear, how they style themselves, their hair or their make up.

If someone is particularly attractive that may be noted, but the daily obsession with appearance and critiquing it is very much mostly a female pursuit.

Pineapple, I don't want to speak for her at all as I hope she wouldn't speak for me, I told her about my experiences 35 years ago as a nurse on a psychiatric ward working with pre-op trans people* She listened and said the SNP were reviewing their policy at the moment ( I believed her) she said she stood up for minorities but that didn't mean the rights of minorities trumped all others.

  • things were very different then!
7to25 · 15/12/2019 10:31

Sorry about the bold!
She said she would never use the term "cis-woman" which was actually the question that I asked her. I was enraged by Swinson's woman's hour interview.

As Ed Davey said the Libdems always do terrible with ba hard left Labour as Tories cleverly say that a Lib vote lefts in a very socialist government which Lib voters despise.

ForalltheSaints · 15/12/2019 21:35

I think that the cancellation of Brexit without a vote harmed the Lib Dems, and the repeated reminder of what she voted for as part of the coalition stuck as well, more than most of the other Lib Dems who either were not MPs then or are remembered for other things.

achainisonlyasstrong · 15/12/2019 22:17

Think the bile directed at Jo Swinson is misguided. Always thought she came across as likeable and intelligent. Lots of Lib Dems prob thought so too as how else did she win the leadership. Also think women In power often get criticised for being irritating, annoying etc think it’s the fact that they have power that people find irritating. She seems to be getting a lot more blame for austerity than the conservatives! May not agree with her position on gender identity. But it comes from a place of empathising with transgender community who have faced a lot of difficulties. Don t think she deserves the venom she has faced, which is ironically more than a lot of men who actually abuse women!!!!

BingoLittlesUncle · 15/12/2019 22:27

Yes I felt sorry for her. She'd bitten off far more than she could chew as leader, but I was still sorry for her.

Malvinaa81 · 16/12/2019 17:24

Good riddance.

Unfortunately her type don't just go away, and learn from it.

She'll soon be back spouting her nonsense, and her smugness will be undiminished!

AuntSpiker · 16/12/2019 17:42

How can an intelligent person deny the existence of biological sex? If you're going to come out with bollocks like that, at least have some sort of justification for it (not that I can think of any but there you go). Especially if you've been asked about it several times.

IcedPurple · 16/12/2019 17:46

Also think women In power often get criticised for being irritating, annoying etc think it’s the fact that they have power that people find irritating.

Or maybe, just maybe.... some women actually ARE irritating and annoying? Just as some men are?

RipleysCat · 16/12/2019 17:51

If someone can’t think of a single reason why safeguarding could be compromised by letting any Tom, Dick or Harry in women’s changing/toilet spaces then they they haven’t got the cognitive facilities to run the country.
My fear was if someone will shaft you over that despite it being obvious what problems may arise, then they’ll shaft you over the next thing that comes up on the Woke agenda.
God knows what we’ll be told next is the ‘most oppressed’ minority group.

SandySpain9 · 18/12/2019 13:36

Yes shafting in toilets is for sure a consequence....
