So who's going to replace Corbyn?

Worst election defeat since Michael Foot in the 80s. Surely Labour has to realise that they need someone to appeal to the masses and the floating voters like me who would never vote for the Momentum crowd.

Keir Starmer is impressive. He's bright, articulate and has a life outside politics. Would Yvette Cooper be up for it?

And more importantly, can the Momentum lot take their blinkers off and realise that THEY are the problem?

And if she's got links to the right wing media then it might actually be a positive. Momentum are blaming the right wing press for the losses of last night, so 🤷🏽‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2019 13:44

Iirc Blair and Campbell is when people started talking about spin.

Since then Labour has been woeful at thinking about how the press will destroy them and gone with strong internal extremists instead.

Ed was the first wrong choice, the media hated him.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 13:49

Oh yes, isn't Alistair Campbell who Malcolm Tucker was based on? Or is that just a rumour?

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:53

He was pretty openly based on him, they even had a bit of a twitter war i seem to remember. Momentum arnt entirey wrong there for once. Blair had even the S*n on his side.

CornishMaid1 · 13/12/2019 13:55

I am not a Labour supporter. I am, since leaving Uni, Conservative (was Lib Dem as a student).

I dislike how right wing Tories are now and I wonder if that is why Lib Dem did have more votes (even if that doesn't translate to seats) yesterday. I was one who went from Tory to Lib Dem for it as I cannot be that right wing, but Labour is so far out to the left under Corbyn that that was not a viable alternative and I don't think I am alone in that.

For all his faults, Labour need another leader like Blair so central left rather than completely left. If there was a leader positioned there, I think many more, particularly those to the right of centre would be swayed across. It is just that the far left is just too far a position.

Alastair Campbell has spoken a lot of sense on it, when for the European Elections he said that he had to vote Lib Dem as Labour was not electable. Rather than listen to him, the party just kicked him out. If they had listened to him then and Corbyn had resigned as leader and replaced by someone less far-left socialist, I think the result may have been much different today.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:55

cant believe it was this long ago-

''Peter Capaldi: Malcolm Tucker is Alastair Campbell. But Mandelson is in there, too''

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2009/oct/17/peter-capaldi-malcolm-tucker-tv

ginnybag · 13/12/2019 13:56

@wowfudge - I did exactly the same thing, so did my husband, and so did about 25 people I know locally.

We're all natural Lib Dem voters, but yesterday we voted tactically to try to keep Brexit Party/Tory candidates out.

Despite that, our seat has just gone Tory for the first time ever.

The Labour vote last night was awful, but how bad was it really? If all the people who did what we did had voted as we 'should' have, how would it have looked then?

At what point are Labour going to recognise that they haven't got a party base anymore?

Rosehip10 · 13/12/2019 13:57

The long standing problem and getting worse in Labour is that the party is a coalition between working class typically "northern" or other working class areas and middle class London seats and a few place like Canterbury and Exeter with a middle class student vote. Any leader will find it harder and harder to keep that together and produce policies that satisfy both groups.

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2019 13:57

Maybe he was but sure though. I haven’t really watched it.

Blair got a stonking majority . The UK will vote Labour if the conditions are right, not Momentum Labour though. Time to listen, one can hope.

ChocoChunk1 · 13/12/2019 13:58

Keir Starmer, Stella Creasy, Jess Phillips or Yvette Cooper.

Al that far left moamentum lot can go, thank you very much.

CustardySergeant · 13/12/2019 14:03

I think Hilary Benn would be a good choice.

Winecheesesleep · 13/12/2019 14:11

Someone who is a complete break from Corbyn and Momentum who will apologise properly for anti-semitism in the party and root out the perpetrators. Momentum aren't going to accept their responsibility for this though so I'm not sure how likely that is.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 13/12/2019 14:16

I'd have a Labour 'big three' of Keir Starmer as Leader of the Opposition, Stella Creasy as Shadow Chancellor and David Lammy as Shadow Home Secretary.

Rosehip10 · 13/12/2019 14:18

Stella creasy will only appeal to the London type seats that labour continue to do well/ok in. She would have no chance of winning back northern/Welsh voters.

The Labour Party need to get rid of Momentum if they ever want to form a government
Momentum aren’t going anywhere. Jon Lansman, on ITV up against Alan Johnson stated
Alan wants to kick [Momentum] out. I think that would be a disaster for the Labour Party
So, whatever a disaster looks like for Jon Lansman and Momentum, apparently last night wasn’t it. He also said that both Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband resigned too soon after their defeats and that Jeremy Corbyn, has to decide for himself, but nothing should happen til at least next year. And if Momentum aren’t going anywhere, I don’t think that the likes of Yvette Cooper or Kier Starmer will be able (or willing) to work in that frame.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/12/2019 15:48

Andy Burnam
Keir Starmer
Jess Phillips

I didn't vote for Labour yesterday, but would like to point out that Corbyn got over 32% of the vote, which is higher than Ed Miliband (30%) and Gordon Brown (29%).
The reason why Labour lost, is the number of Labour voters who voted Leave in the referendum, millions of them, and the fact that the Labour MP's were constantly trying to stop Brexit.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2019 15:56

I don’t think he’ll go that easily.

billysboy · 13/12/2019 15:57

I wish to personally thank Mr #JeremyCorbyn and the entire #LabourParty Front Bench for delivering a clear and concise demonstration of how out of touch their brand of #socialism really is.

how true from twitter

tillytrotter1 · 13/12/2019 15:59

Let's hope that McDonnell or some other deluded far left idiot gets the job, they'll never get elected. I'd suggest Diane Abbott also puts her name forward or is she doing Rachel Riley's maternity leave?

fromthefloorboardsup · 13/12/2019 16:16

@FizzyIce That photo was photoshopped, she had a matching pair of shoes on.

Areyoufree · 13/12/2019 16:22

Clive Lewis could be a pretty good option.

Harpingon · 13/12/2019 16:25

Jess Phillips. Yvette Cooper is too unpopular and divisive.
