So who's going to replace Corbyn?

Worst election defeat since Michael Foot in the 80s. Surely Labour has to realise that they need someone to appeal to the masses and the floating voters like me who would never vote for the Momentum crowd.

Keir Starmer is impressive. He's bright, articulate and has a life outside politics. Would Yvette Cooper be up for it?

And more importantly, can the Momentum lot take their blinkers off and realise that THEY are the problem?

i know how bad it was. But ten million people voted Labour. That’s not “dead”. Those people need representation.

Of course they do. But in context 10 million and declining its devastating.

MsPepperPotts · 13/12/2019 08:54

I knew he would not stand down. He's an arrogant, thick skinned, self serving idiot with absolutely no interest in the people of this country.

I live in a town that has just gained the Conservative seat for the first time in over a hundred years. That surely has to tell you something about the whole Labour shit show and people have had enough.

PineappleDanish · 13/12/2019 08:55

Has anyone said that Labour isn't still a major force in politics?

But they have gone from 418 seats won under Blair in 1997 to 413 in 2001, 355 in 2005, 306 in 2010, 232 in 2015, 262 in 2017... to

203 in 2019. That's less than HALF the seats which Blair got. Even if you take off hte Scottish vote, it still indicates that Labour has a massive problem in the UK as a whole.

They need to move swiftly to remove Corbyn, and his front bench, and start to rebuild. Dithering for another couple of years is just going to make the vote slump even further.

He will stand down. I understand him not doing it immediately. Am sure in the new year the party will go about selecting a new leader. I think Keir Starmer would be a good choice.

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 09:00

Labour does have a problem, but yes, someone did say they were dead. And they’re not.

Medievalist · 13/12/2019 09:00

My opinion of McDonnell went up last night when the exit polls came out and he was honest enough to admit it was a disaster. He didn't try to put a positive spin on things.

But he did say it was entirely due to Brexit - nothing to do with him and JC. No siree ...Hmm

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 09:01

But I think Corbyn faced a perfect storm in this election. I don’t believe another leader would have done significantly better.

Eyewhisker · 13/12/2019 09:02

Ruralbliss - you may love the manifesto but the voters didn’t. It was unrealistic and unaffordable with zero understanding of economics (and I say that as an economist). The manifesto seemed to be - if it moves, nationalise it. Why would any company invest in a country with that attitude?

And I hate BJ and all he stands for

yep the manifesto isnt the problem, its presentation is, and the leadership. If you look at labours 1997 policies, they really arnt that much more radical. If you present the policies to people with 'labour' or 'socialist' they like them. The press in this country is a fuckin disgrace.

Centrism is dying a much quicker death, and rightly so.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 09:08

kjhkj · 13/12/2019 09:10

I didn't vote for them but IMO it needs to be Kier Starmer. As much as I hate to admit it and accept that prejudices still exist, a female candidate is less likely to do well and so i think KS is a better bet than Yvette Cooper.

Angela Rayner would be a complete and utter nightmare. She would alienate even more people than Corbyn.

HappydaysArehere · 13/12/2019 09:12

Jess Philips is one I would trust. Yvette Cooper is another and yes Keir Starmer. We need someone positive, central and with immense common sense.

Moonmelodies · 13/12/2019 09:13

What's Ed Balls up to these days?

Cwenthryth · 13/12/2019 09:13

Jess Phillip's would just be another joe swinson.

Really? I don’t see that at all.

Jess Philips is fierce, honest, listens to her constituents, lives in her constituency, strong on women’s and children’s issues and true social justice.

Jo Swinson is patronising, says what she thinks her base wants to hear, doesn’t listen to anyone who isn’t paying her, sold women’s rights off for woke cookies, seemed to have forgotten where her constituency is and voted for austerity at every possible opportunity when she was in coalition.

Is my take on comparing the two.

macaronicheese345 · 13/12/2019 09:15

The Labour Party need to get rid of Momentum if they ever want to form a government.

meyouandlulutoo · 13/12/2019 09:18

I think Dan Jarvis is a principled MP - I don't even live in his constituency but I have always thought he would make a good leader.

angemorange · 13/12/2019 09:18

Keir Starmer probably the voter's choice, but Corbyn will probably try to set up the next leader in his image which will be a disaster.

Watching Alan Johnson last night I was struck what a good leader he would have made.

Cyberworrier · 13/12/2019 09:18

How would Jess Phillips be another Jo Swinson? Apart from being female and young? I think Jess Phillips a much more confident politician and with a really good rapport with the electorate.

I agree the manifesto wasn’t the problem (or the only problem..), it was the leadership. It doesn’t matter if we have the most excellent ideas to transform society into a fair and caring place if Mr and Mrs Average think we are the Bolsheviks. Please let the next leader be someone with wider appeal, like Keir Starmer- and NOT JOHN MCDONNELL.

Gave up my membership because of the poor handling of anti semitism. May rejoin.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 09:20

What happened with Swinson? didnt expect her to stand down. Why are the lib dems changing leader every 5 minutes? to make way for bloody Chuka and co?

Bluntness100 · 13/12/2019 09:24

She had to stand down, she lost her seat, she can't be leader if she's not an mp.

Didiusfalco · 13/12/2019 09:24

She lost her seat patroclus Chuka too.

GinUnicorn · 13/12/2019 09:25

Keir Stammer or David Lammy get my vote

Didiusfalco · 13/12/2019 09:28

I’m not sure about Jess Phillips. She’s a bloody good local MP, but I’m not sure she’s level headed/strategic enough for leader. I would like to see Yvette Cooper or Keir Starmer. I’m a moderate labour voter, I want them to be electable. However great the manifesto looked it’s a pipe dream if you can’t get into government.

Cwenthryth · 13/12/2019 09:29

Hmm David Lammy interesting. I don’t agree with him on everything but have a lot of respect for him and a black leader of the opposition would be a good first.
