I feel utterly in despair. How can people not care about the NHS, the planet, the homeless.... etc etc etc...

OP posts:
BerwickLad · 13/12/2019 00:02

Yes Blyth Valley voted leave and the previous incumbent and longstanding Labour figure was also for leave. New candidate was a centre left social worker who primarily campaigned along the Trump is going to buy the NHS bullshit.

Labour has lost to a bloke in a fridge because they had incoherent policies and also their selection process is fucked. Momentum have got rid of lots of old party stalwarts and the people parachuted in are not popular. Even when local parties have been able to field more moderate candidates it's been a scramble.

HeIenaDove · 13/12/2019 00:03

Speaking of buying champagne i actually think a fair amount of people will reign in their Christmas spending because of not knowing what/where Tories will cut next.

January retail figures will certainly be interesting.

Will probably drop below this.

LoveNote · 13/12/2019 00:05

how can anyone vote for Corbyn though? he's deluded

aintnothinbutagstring · 13/12/2019 00:08

I voted Labour, but I feel handing Brexit to Labour would have been political suicide for the Labour party and JC. Let the Tories finish what they started and handle this hot potato, because we're all gonna be watching and waiting for it to be delivered and delivered well. Let the labour party reform properly and gather strength to fight back once Brexit is 'done'.

heyday · 13/12/2019 00:08

All people care about is bloody Brexit!!! We can now say goodbye to everything good about this country. Sit back and watch the rich become even richer....sickening and quite frankly unbelievable ( if exit polls are correct)

BerwickLad · 13/12/2019 00:10

Exactly, @LoveNote. Also he is surrounded by awful people who have done untold damage to the party at local level.

These seats that are turning blue - Blyth Valley, Sunderland, Wakefield ffs - they aren't just "Labour strongholds", to coin a phrase. They're the places where the Labour party is from. They are full of people who have supported, worked alongside and campaigned for Labour all their lives. And they're not stupid, or callous, or uncaring. For Corbyn to lose them is damning.

ChristmasCroissant · 13/12/2019 00:11

I do feel quite out of step with the rest of the country. I thought Boris would get a small majority that would be at risk if everyone else banded together - that doesn't look as if it's going to be the case.

As I said on another thread, we need an effective and electable opposition party no matter who is in power. We don't have that.

followthestardis · 13/12/2019 00:11

i was holding out with my acquired stoicism, but yeah, the polls make me genuinely afraid of the future (not mine, specifically, OURS, as a society)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/12/2019 00:11

Johnson isn't gunning for no deal, he's gunning for his deal

He hasn't got a deal, it's a withdrawal agreement. He needs to do something like 700 trade agreements in a year which is simply not possible. He's said he won't extend the transition period so that only leaves no deal.

BrickTop999 · 13/12/2019 00:12

Labour almost bankrupted this country and brought in soooo many stealth taxes
Who could ever have faith in Corbin and Abbot !

HeIenaDove · 13/12/2019 00:12

I read @Awwlookatmybabyspider comment out to DH His words were "shes 100% correct"

wonkylegs · 13/12/2019 00:12

I shed a tear at this whole election campaign from every side.
It's our 19yr anniversary today and we were just ruminating on how the U.K. has become less compassionate, more divisive, less equal and less forward thinking in that time.
We are quick to believe shit on SM and the quality of information we receive seems to be from the gutter and people don't enquire and question that information. It's seems it's more about mudslinging, the cult of personality and blaming others rather than finding answers, co-operation and making the world a better place.
I don't think this is just a U.K. problem however it is the place where we notice it most and obviously it currently affects us most here.
The country is full of different people with different situations and views and we should be trying to make that work in the best compromise possible not shouting about how shit everybody else is for not being exactly the same as us.

BonnesVacances · 13/12/2019 00:13

They’ll get Brexit, but I hope they don’t need education, healthcare, a stable climate or any financial support.

Actually I hope they do.

AnalUnicorn · 13/12/2019 00:16

I’m incredibly tired of Tory voters being cast as not caring ”about the NHS, the planet, the homeless”

I do care about all of those things. I happen to think that Labour’s plans to bankrupt the country are not the right way to resolve them.

AlexaShutUp · 13/12/2019 00:19

Perhaps if all you Tories care about the NHS, the planet and the homeless, you could actually start showing it? You know, by actually trying to help in some way instead of making things worse?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/12/2019 00:22

maybe if they put their kids first they'd be well fed. It's not rocket science

What a vile comment. Maybe you should try volunteering at your local food bank and talk to people about the real reasons they are suffering. You haven't a sodding clue.

LoveNote · 13/12/2019 00:27

alexa how do you know we don't? corbyns lot care too do they? do they buggery.....

EdinaMonsoon · 13/12/2019 00:29

@ginginchinchin

"maybe if they put their kids first they'd be well fed. It's not rocket science"

You've clearly never had any real & meaningful interaction with people living in poverty. A truly despicable attitude. And it's not "rocket science" to realise you cannot sustain and live a healthy & meaningful life on the peanuts thrown to the very poor & vulnerable of our country.

AlexaShutUp · 13/12/2019 00:29

I'm no fan of Corbyn, but I know the Tories don't do anything to help because I've witnessed their actions in government for the last decade. And I've seen the stats!

cannycat20 · 13/12/2019 00:32

I asked a Tory once how they slept at night. The answer? On a big, fat, wad of money.

I'm so glad the Brexiteers are going to get what they wanted. I just hope they know their 1930s history. Or even better, their Boer War history....

theunknownknown · 13/12/2019 00:36

They are full of people who have supported, worked alongside and campaigned for Labour all their lives. And they're not stupid, or callous, or uncaring
Au contraire, they are fucking stupid. And racist. After voting labour for all of my adult life (even though I would probably be better off under tories) I'm done. If the stupid fuckers in Blythe Valley et al voted tory, let them suffer the worst of it.

AlexaShutUp · 13/12/2019 00:39

If the stupid fuckers in Blythe Valley et al voted tory, let them suffer the worst of it.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel about it. Let them reap what they sow.

The sad part is that many innocent people will also suffer.

Paintedmaypole · 13/12/2019 00:47

Brexit has been a bigger factor than anything, it is obvious from which seats are showing tbe biggest swings. Sadly theunknownunknown has a point.

BerwickLad · 13/12/2019 00:47

Because that will win back the people who are the reason the Labour party exists at all..

zsazsajuju · 13/12/2019 00:51

I think we can firmly blame Jeremy Corbyn for this. He is alienating not just centrists but labours core voters. We need to persuade and bring along enough people with us. If we can’t, we can’t just blame them. We have to think why we don’t appeal to them.
