DH ordered me a surprise present from John Lewis.
It was just delivered - wrapped in thin plastic, visible for the whole world to see. No box. WHY??????
Surprise ruined!!

Hmm... JL use cardboard boxes for delivery and bubblewrap inside depending on item/s.....

Some people lead utterly joylous lives judging by this thread . Of course you are not being unreasonable, aside from spoiling your surprise why would you want the postman, or your neighbours knowing your spending habits.
Opaque bag as minimum.

JemSynergy · 07/12/2019 22:06

There are some really cold people on here. I can see your disappointment.

Pancakeflipper · 07/12/2019 22:11

I'd be disappointed if I was your husband (but that's cos it's hard to think of anything to surprise my partner and to have it ruined would make me grumpy).

Aridane · 07/12/2019 22:22

@TooSweetToBeSour Grin

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 07/12/2019 22:24

Why ask AIBU if you think everyone who disagrees with you are "miserable Grinches"

This.

Aridane · 07/12/2019 22:28

Aw - why has @TooSweetToBeSour's post been deleted? It was the best post of the thread!

SashayThatWay · 07/12/2019 22:30

Tricky if he's bought you a surprise sofa, they're a SOD to get in a box

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 22:37

I missed it!
That'll teach me to take time off MN for IAC.

Could you just be happy he’s done something thoughtful? Forget how it’s arrived and thank your partner?

This surprises me. I placed one order with John Lewis for 4 items, they arrived in 3 separate boxes, 2 boxes were delivered on the same day and the third delivered a day later. The boxes were massive and filled with those air filled bags. Honestly, the amount of wasted packaging puts me off ordering from them again.

AgeShallNotWitherHer · 07/12/2019 22:42

ReallyOP growup.
Packaging is a problem - too much of it.
Your DH should have picked it up from a local store click and collect and hidden it in the office/garage. Or gone to a JL store himself.

KatherineJaneway · 07/12/2019 22:42

@saraclara

Then I'd complain about it.

poorstudent1010 · 07/12/2019 22:42

Some items are suitable to be shipped in their retail packaging, ie without needing any extra support/protection. So I suppose your ruined surprise has helped the environment if that’s any consolation! As you know what it is, you/him may as well check the item over to ensure that it isn’t damaged.

I personally wouldn’t get angry over this though. I could understand if the gift giver was angry that the surprise was ruined, but not the recipient.

poorstudent1010 · 07/12/2019 22:43

Him = he

TreeMenDos · 07/12/2019 22:46

Mumsnet is so weird.

It's December
People are obviously buying gifts for family. Why any company would send out a parcel with the contents visible is completely beyond me. 90% of things sent out this month are going to be gifts. Of course the contents should be hidden!

Even outside of Christmas. We've had a massive issue with couriers and missing parcels. If people can see exactly what's in a parcel I think the number of expensive items being 'lost' would sky rocket

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 22:48

Mumsnet is so weird.

Yep. You're not wrong.

Another40ththread · 07/12/2019 22:48

Was thinking exactly the same @TreeMenDos

@CallmeAngelina sorry about your dad Thanks

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 22:49

And we seem to be approaching "cancel the cheque" territory here.
Anyone else like to suggest that dh should have ordered it via the store or "click and collect?"
Can't be bothered to explain, yet again, why not.

@poorstudent1010 that may be true objectively however it’s not for a store to decide this. Consumer privacy is paramount

ginghamstarfish · 07/12/2019 22:55

'source' Grin sorry OP but this made me laugh. He didn't charter an expedition up the Nile, he ordered it off a website.

AgnesNaismith · 07/12/2019 22:56

I was with you.....until you said the words ‘my DH SOURCED’ Envy
