To think this is an odd Christmas present

I met up with a friend yesterday for lunch and we usually exchange small gifts, nothing fancy, up to about £20. For reference I got her a nice candle, a mug and some chocs. Just general little goodies.

She gave me a necklace, which is lovely, but it has the name of her daughter engraved on it. It's a lovely necklace and her daughter is lovely, and I'm sure it would be a lovely present for her... but surely it would make more sense to get my own kids names engraved on it?

It was a lovely necklace but I just don't understand! I'm only really posting as dh thinks she might of ordered that one for her and one with my own kids name on for me and got them the wrong way round and said to ask her. Or is this not as weird as it seems in my head?

Bloody hell I can't believe it wasn't a mistake.
Who does something like that? Totally weird.

Youseethethingis · 07/12/2019 14:38

It’s very odd as she would’ve spent half the budget at least just on the engraving Xmas Confused

BrieAndChilli · 07/12/2019 14:40

I’d like my own kids names on a necklace but no one else’s!! I wouldn’t have my niece and nephews names on a necklace either? Just a bit wired

cricketmum84 · 07/12/2019 14:41

Bonkers.

I can beat that one though. SIL got a tattoo of MY daughters name. But got it wrong. Hyphenated her first and middle name where there is no hyphen. Batshit or what?!

BlackCatSleeping · 07/12/2019 14:41

Can’t stop laughing at this!!

PFB alert!

christmassymcchristmas · 07/12/2019 14:43

What on earth did you put to make her think you don't like it?!

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 07/12/2019 14:45

I'm cringing for her. She's deep in PFB syndrome.

ShouldI101 · 07/12/2019 14:45

And you have your own baby? That makes it even weirder that she would think you would want to wear someone else's baby's name round your neck.

WildfirePonie · 07/12/2019 14:45

Keep it and regift it back next Xmas.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 07/12/2019 14:46

It is slightly odd. But people are strange. And mostly harmless. It was so obvious to me that the message was intended, that I’m really surprised other people could not see it. It was a bit of a social solecism on the part of a new mum. The OP is not castigating her friend, so it seems unkind for the internet to do so.

Si1ver · 07/12/2019 14:46

I'm sorry, can we all just stop to unpack this giant ball of batshit?

I can beat that one though. SIL got a tattoo of MY daughters name

How on earth did this possibly come up? Over Sunday lunch round the in laws? Hey look at my new tattoo?

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 07/12/2019 14:47

Like the parents who present teachers with a framed photograph of their child as a gift. Odd as fuck, but it happens!

Oh God - our class did that once with a whole group photo which cost the earth. I was utterly bewildered as to why they the class rep thought our kids were so special the teacher needed a photo of them when the cost could have bought a spa weekend or a case of champagne. I really resented being asked to cough up towards it when it seemed so bloody arrogant. I ended up buying a gift on top which was more personal for the poor woman who had to stand there, saying Yes just what I always wanted at this fancy schmancy picture on titanium or whatever it was. The parent who had taken the photo and messed with it digitally also took payment for his services ''minimum'' charge but cheeky fuckery at its best.

cricketmum84 · 07/12/2019 14:47

@Si1ver she came round to show us 😂 I know. Serious serious batshit ball of crazy there.

Not sure I could close my mouth for long enough to actually speak.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 07/12/2019 14:51

i was once gifted a Build A Bear voucher, the gift being I could take a friend’s child and pay for the child’s bear. I still have the voucher. that’s so funny!!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 07/12/2019 14:52

Some of this seems a little unkind. First time motherhood can be quite unsettling. Why not just let it go as an anomaly? Why criticise the gifter so much? She hasn’t actually caused any harm.

Si1ver · 07/12/2019 14:53

@cricketmum84 where is it? Is it fancy script surrounded by hearts and swirls? Was this immediately after your child was born? Has she since developed a close and loving relationship with the child? Does she have any of her own?

I have so many questions.

BuffaloCauliflower · 07/12/2019 14:53

That is really strange, why would she ever think someone would want that?! I have lovely DNs/godchildren but can’t think why I’d want their names on jewellery Confused she’s very strange

Moggymorn · 07/12/2019 14:55

@LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood I definitely wasn't trying to be mean. Just thought she'd bought two with both our dcs name on and got them muddled

My friend gave me a framed photo of her dogs for Christmas. Grin

People are so weird!!

avocadotofu · 07/12/2019 14:58

That's a really weird gift, especially as you have your own baby who's name you'd probably rather wear?

Panpastels · 07/12/2019 15:04

If she gets snottier ask whether she wants a necklace with your dc's name engraved on it - that might alert her to the fact she is not in her right mind on this one!

Iwouldlikesomecake · 07/12/2019 15:05

You can always say, "look I was just checking before I got too happy about what a lovely thing to do, in case it wasn't meant for me and then I'd have felt really presumptuous. I'm really touched it was meant for me, it's a lovely thing to have".

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 07/12/2019 15:07

Sorry OP. I didn’t think you were at all mean. Some of the comments were though.

SweetSally · 07/12/2019 15:08

I really don't want to say this but the cynic in me thinks that she has regifted a necklace she has been given as a gift and she doesn't like
