AIBU for the teacher not to use the word Numpty

My son who is 6 used the word numpty and I asked him where he had heard this. He said his class teacher is using this word to describe the children when they've done something a bit silly and has called.h and other children that. Am I over reacting or is that just not ok, she is basically calling them stupid and encouraging the kids to name call

I wouldn't have a problem with this. To me, numpty is an endearing term for someone who's done something a bit silly.

I used to think teachers were lucky with their holidays. Then my eldest started school and I joined a Facebook group of school mums and they tend to spend a lot of time complaining over petty, ridiculous shite like this.

Suddenly I have nothing but respect for teachers. Because this would drive me to despair.

Teachers can’t do right for wrong - and kids need to learn some resilience and how to deal with being wrong sometimes.

I know I’m unreasonable. I wouldn’t complain about it. But I absolutely hate it and would tell my child not to use it.

I call my kids (both mine at home, and the ones I teach) numpties when they've done something a bit silly because they've not been thinking. So forget your maths book, you're a numpty. Knock over a bottle of water, you're a numpty. Call someone a mean name, not a numpty, that's unkind and we have a far more serious conversation. Forget your homework, you're a numpty who has a detention to do your homework then.

Numpty is generally used affectionately. Obviously if she's using a horrible tone, or using it when a child is upset, then that's different. But most people, ime, use a very affectionate tone and it's used to denote you having been a bit silly but no harm done.

Teachers aren’t supposed to be robots. Our relationships with the children are the most important tool we have in them making progress.

You really need something better to occupy your time.

YABU and oversensitive. Numpty is harmless. There’s a lot worse your ds will encounter in the future.

To me “oh you numpty” is an ideal way to point out to a child that what they have done is a bit daft but they aren’t in trouble for it!

Well you should know better.
Eejit means stupid unless you have a time machine those names were left behind in the 90's.
Our teachers used to call us eejits or amadons when they were allowed to be verbally abusive to DC.

Maybe you should home school then the only influence on your child will be you.
