I went into my local shop this morning and the female shop assistant was wearing a Xmas jumper. Not unusual for the time of year you might think. A black jumper with pretty red and green sparkly bits including bells.
But underneath the design were the words in big gold letters, 'Gingle Bells'.
I said nothing because I know the woman and didn't want to spoil her day. But really, this is right up there with redundant apostrophes and other language crimes.
Still wish I'd said something now Xmas Confused.

hoist on your own petard

nope - with, or by, never on... (slinks back to corner)

SauvignonBlanche · 06/12/2019 13:49

I’ve made a tit of myself on here before but at least I admitted it.

I want one of those jumpers. Xmas Grin

Witchend · 06/12/2019 13:53

Dig... dig...dig...

MinervaSaidThat · 06/12/2019 13:55

Me acting superior? You mean like the posters on MN frothing at the mouth over 'Chester draws' on facebook? Yeah I've seen the gin puns everywhere. But no need to call someone a 'dickhead'. I guess my obsession with spelling blinded me to the pun. Tends to happen when you've a first in English (not a boast, just to counter the implication I'm thick).grin

First of all - Nelson style HAHA! Joke’s on you, OP.

Secondly, anyone who says they have an obsession with spelling and posts a thread about such a mundane thing sure as hell is a SPAG pedant and I bet you are the one frothing at the mouth over ‘Chester Draws’ and are now deflecting.

HAHA

spanglydangly · 06/12/2019 13:56

@starshine1926 people did start off as gintly as possible, they were trying to point out that you ginuinley got the wrong end of the stick. Now it would be gracious to accept the ginuine comments on here and pour a large gin and have a good old laugh at yourself?

It's gin o'clock somewhere in the world surely?

MinervaSaidThat · 06/12/2019 13:57

Gintly Grin

@MinervaSaidThat there are more, keep reading! 😂

MinervaSaidThat · 06/12/2019 13:59

Oh yeah 😂

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 06/12/2019 14:00

I've got a third and I still know what a pun is.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 06/12/2019 14:00

@spanglydangly Most excellent Gin

Softskin88 · 06/12/2019 14:01

Perhaps “gingle” bells is the traditional English way of spelling it?

Just like how the American “jail” has replaced the English “gaol” in most print news now.

FizzyGreenWater · 06/12/2019 14:03

BeyondMyWits, I don't have a first so I neither know nor care Grin

And here I thought this was going to be a dull thread, then OP came back....

Boom45 · 06/12/2019 14:10

Hi! I also got a first in English (and I am totally boasting, it was an awesome achievement that I am very proud of and hasn't led to me earning over the average wage in the 20 years since so I need to brag about it to stop myself feeling like an over qualified failure).
I am also dyslexic so my spelling is amazingly bad and my my apostrophe use erratic. I don't care about "language crimes" - my favourite thing about English is its adaptability and the way it has shifted and changed over the centuries. "Should of" for instance will be accepted usage in a couple of generations, and why not? It's the joy of English.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 06/12/2019 14:11

Anyone else humming this?

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 06/12/2019 14:12

It's a play on words. Xmas Hmm

GingleJangleScarecrow · 06/12/2019 14:12

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Whattodoabout · 06/12/2019 14:12

Grin the only daft one is you for missing the very obvious pun.

Mia1415 · 06/12/2019 14:15

Completely ignoring the fact that you missed the joke, why on earth would you even think it was OK to comment on someone's clothing (joke or not). How rude!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 06/12/2019 14:15

@Itsallgonewoowoo - you have just made me properly cackle, like the MN days of yore Grin

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 06/12/2019 14:15

I guess my obsession with spelling blinded me to the pun. Tends to happen when you've a first in English

I would have thought that a first in English would have made you more alert to subtle word play, not less.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 06/12/2019 14:21

Just like how the American “jail” has replaced the English “gaol” in most print news now.

I cannot forgive the world for this. Angry

GingleJangleScarecrow

Seeing Gingle's name, I now have user name envy. Is that a thing?

Boom45 · 06/12/2019 14:23

@GingleJangleScarecrow 'fraid so. Language change is inevitable....

Excited101 · 06/12/2019 14:27

I got a Desmond and I still got the pun... do I get a prize?! 😆
