but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

I love a good shiny foil decoration. Proper Christmas!! Anyone still do paper chains?

BuildBuildings · 06/12/2019 07:58

I knew they were going to be these ones when I clicked on the title! I have some similar ones from wilko. They remind me of childhood too! I don't go for classy and understated at Christmas so I'm not particularly bothered if they're tacky.

rosydreams · 06/12/2019 08:01

when my other half and i had children we realised we needed to make the home festive.Generally we go for anything christmassy and cover the house in it.Dont really know what were doing but but if it looks festive ok then

lol our house must be tat central but i always thought it was important for the children to make christmas feel special

Freddiemercuarysmoustache · 06/12/2019 08:02

The foil garlands and also big individual foil stars hanging down from the ceiling. Does anybody remember them i think there were snowflakes aswell.

lborgia · 06/12/2019 08:04

We found some lametta that my grandma had not used, in what looked like fifties packaging... it was weirdly heavy, my brother and I loved it, but suddenly my mum freaked out and snatched it away. Ice just remembered, I think the stuff had lead in it or somethingShockConfused

Love the 70s pub look!!

MidnightCircus · 06/12/2019 08:05

Ye gods, this whole thread is basically my childhood! Christmas eve, tree up, we go to bed and mum would then hang the reindeer, hang the garlands (with fold-out foil bells), so when we got up Christmas day, was all done! So exciting, felt like a proper special day.

tinselbaubletinselbauble · 06/12/2019 08:06

These type of things? @Freddiemercuarysmoustache

We had that sleigh and reindeer too. Found this last year - not quite the same but close www.gingerray.co.uk/festive-reindeer-santa-sleigh-bunting-christmas-snowman.html?gclid=CjwKCAiAlajvBRB_EiwA4vAqiLRB23R3UyAhx9i4TXjCFCvODMdJSmI4faugpbx4AQMcTSyimCawiBoCm-EQAvD_BwE

CeCeLaine66 · 06/12/2019 08:09

I love them, we had those and the cardboard Santa sleigh. I remember the smell of the tinsel but it doesn’t smell the same nowadays!

Debated buying the foil ones on Saturday in b and m for the kitchen as I have a retro thing going on in there. I didn’t get them but might pop back and pick some up.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/12/2019 08:11

@evilharpy omg I think we had one! That's brought back a lot of memories,I'm 39 are you a similar age?

lborgia · 06/12/2019 08:12

Holy crap, it is lead!!

JellyFromTheBlock · 06/12/2019 08:13

Love love love these! I fondly remember getting up every morning to see that one had fallen down! Brings back memories of happy childhood Christmases! 😊

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/12/2019 08:13

We used to have the little gold candle-lit Angel Chimes .

Every year it came out and every year there was a bit missing .

I found some back in the late 90s , found the small thin candles and had the lovely sounds of the metallic 'click' as the angels' wands struck the bells.
They go at quite a rate and the candles burn down too quick.

lborgia · 06/12/2019 08:20

70isalimit you can still get them, and the secret is to only use 2 of the 4 candlesXmas Wink much slower burning, and less frantic merry go round!

Freddiemercuarysmoustache · 06/12/2019 08:20

tinselbaubletinselbauble thats the ones my nan had them in silver and gold different colour on each side. Makes me feel all nostalgic.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/12/2019 08:23

I hate those. I'm still very annoyed that my parents replaced the much-loved paper streamers with these 35ish years ago. The paper streamers were Christmas.

Thestrangestthing · 06/12/2019 08:24

They both remind me of my grannies houses

Willow2017 · 06/12/2019 08:25

Love all these decorations. Blasts from the past, such wonderful memories from my childhood. I don't have any now (i wore the old ones out😀) except one of those fold out decorations that looks like frosted mistletoe hanging down. Old and selotaped but I love it.

Maybe I should look out for these decs when I go shopping today😁 our 'new house definitely needs cheering up.

My tree is a mix of very old decs, ones kids made, gifts and ones kids and i picked that are in a variety of shades/hints of gold and blue. I also have tinsel on my tree in same colours. We also have cardboard decs from way back when kids were tiny. I would be lynched if I didn't put them up😁

Who cares what decorations other people have? Do what you like in your own home. It's supposed to cheer everyone up and be festive. If it makes you happy sod everyone else's ideas of 'tasteful.
If I won the lottery and I had a huge house I would have one tree and room done in.expensive co-ordinated decs just because I like that style too but I would still have my old ones on another one. My tree is a collection of memories I care not a jot what anyone else would think.of it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/12/2019 08:33

M personal hate is coordinated Christmas trees, where it's all one theme or colour.

I agree . . they are soulless . . .

CroissantsAtDawn · 06/12/2019 08:34

I'd totally forgotten we had those decorations. All throughout the 80s. By the 90s my mum had moved onto other decorations.

But I still remember every year looping them from the 4 corners of the room towards the centre light fitting... and every time at least one would break so we'd sellotape it together and put it back up.

Also like PP, sometimes we'd come down in the morning to find they'd broken again.

My mum also used to have massive card holders that she'd hang up for the hundreds of cards she received.

Making me all nostalgic. We have a tree and a few decorations but nothing like that because we have little storage space and we can't bring ourselves to pin/tape stuff to the walls/ceilings.

Coldhandscoldheart · 06/12/2019 08:37

People that understand the smell of tinsel! People always look at me as if I’m mad when I say that IRL

amusedbush · 06/12/2019 08:38

My personal hate is coordinated Christmas trees, where it's all one theme or colour.

I'm the total opposite, I can't stand a messy, mismatched tree Blush

I love a symmetrical tree with a coherent theme Grin

WatchingFromTheWings · 06/12/2019 08:39

I love that style of decoration and still buy and use them. They aren't as good quality as they used to be though. My mother had the same ones for years and years but nowadays they tend to last a year or 2 at most then they stretch and break.
