but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

@Fruityb, one of those fucking monstrosities went in the bin yesterday evening because it was absolutely fucked as it had been since I accidentally yanked it down last Boxing Day.

The thing I'm eternally grateful he hasn't spotted on Amazon is fucking foil curtains. I had to painstakingly attach 9m of the cunting things to a stage for school shows (without using the sticky strips or staples, I was told to use BluTack), trim them to size individually with a pair of children's scissors so that they were perfectly even across the 29' 6 1/3" run (on an uneven floor with an uneven stage front), collect the offcuts and then use those, sticking each cunting thread up individually to cover the 0.87m remaining and the steps to the stage. And then the little shits would inevitably pull at the things and tear them in rehearsals, so I had to replace individual strands in a way that made the repair invisible, and then, after the final show, remove them, fold them for storage and keep them for next time. At which point, they'd decide to use a different colour or say 'Wouldn't it be lovely to use thinner strands this time? How about you cut each strand in half down the middle?'. And 'whatever happened to the lovely gold ones we used two years ago? Surely you've looked after them, Mitzi?'

Can't imagine how a Sixth Former got wind of them also being known colloquially as 'sodding stripper curtains', but before long, Stripper Curtains were no longer a feature of performances. I still had to endure bastarding confetti cannons and a thousand balloons (Fuck The Environment should have been the school's motto, rather than something about God), but at least the biggest bane of my working life were gone.

every time i see tree robins now it makes me laugh

70sWitch · 11/12/2019 11:45

First time having robins. They are funny but I like them. No reaction from the cat yet but he's an idle bugger.

LoseLooseLucy · 11/12/2019 11:53

Ooh I have Robins too, and tinsel Xmas Grin

The foil garlands remind me of childhood and parties in the hall of the local social club. Smile
They're terribly decorations but bring back fond memories.

PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2019 09:46

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but the multi-coloured garlands are being sold in Poundstretcher.

longwayoff · 12/12/2019 10:02

Tacky? You haven't seen tacky if you haven't seen The Alton Marmot. In place of a lovely Christmas tree, the council decided on the monstrosity. Please Google to see it in all its glory, cant link from phone.

PurpleHoodie · 12/12/2019 11:25
Grin

Oh that is...something.

BeyondMyWits · 12/12/2019 15:59

I . just . have . no . words... a marmot... a marmot??? really??? Grin

LoseLooseLucy · 12/12/2019 16:17

Xmas Grin Haha, wow!

romany4 · 12/12/2019 16:27

I still have garlands every year. Lounge looks bare to me with just a tree.
DH loves them too

gamerchick · 12/12/2019 16:36

I've been trying to find the foil streamers like in the OP for a few years now. They don't seem to sell them anymore anywhere

I got some from home bargains last week. They sell fast.

Christmas has to be cheesy Grin

donttellmetwice · 12/12/2019 16:37

I was just thinking about these decs yesterday. I was looking at my ceiling, where there are no hanging decs, and wondered if they'll ever come back into fashion. I absolutely loved these as a kid and wonder if my little girl will ever see them hanging during her childhood.

gamerchick · 12/12/2019 16:38

The problem with poundstretcher it's a complete gamble on whether you get ones that work or they're the stapled wrong rejects. Still worth a try though.

gamerchick · 12/12/2019 16:39

and wondered if they'll ever come back into fashion

Does it matter if they're in 'fashion' though? Decorate how you want if you want the bairn to see them.

ChristmasMovie · 12/12/2019 16:39

We had most of the ones mentioned on this thread, plus tree decorations similar to this. They had a box with individual spaces for each one. I don't remember a time when at least half of them weren't broken and clumsily glued back together with brown blobs of glue.

Shesalittlemadam · 12/12/2019 17:05

@longleggedgal I got mine from the pound shop!

EerieSilence · 12/12/2019 17:10

Most of our decorations are things that my DD made in the creche and at school in junior and senior infants and at home as well. They're not perfect, they won't make the tree a design perfection straight from a catalogue but they're full of love and excitement and pride and when she looked at them last year and wanted to throw them away because she was self-aware and saw their imperfection, I point blank refused and told her that they need to have the best place on the tree, anything else is irrelevant.
A Christmas tree and Christmas decoration is not about your house looking like you're decorating for a Good Housekeeping photo-shoot, it's about love and memories. These are our memories. And I would also put in some old-fashioned stuff if it reminded me of my childhood too. My DM still uses decorations she bought in the 70s and I almost cried when I saw the photos because it brought me back to my childhood.

Shesalittlemadam · 12/12/2019 17:10

No mention so far of.....

LAMETTA!!!!!

ChristmasMovie · 12/12/2019 18:28

... Apart from all the previous posts talking about it Hmm and cats pooing it out Xmas Grin

rosydreams · 12/12/2019 19:36

you have to be very careful with cats and tinsel .It cost a friend of mine thousands in vet bills when hers ate some.Thankfully the cat was fine after a trip to the vets

Mileymileymoomoo · 12/12/2019 19:50

Not sure if they’ve been mentioned yet but we had the most amazing fairy lights. They were alternate lanterns and carriages in gold and different coloured “glass”.
