to think these are the tackiest Christmas decorations?

but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

@iheartchristmas92, thanks so much for posting that photo. We had the same kind of decorations when I was younger and you've brought back a lot of lovely memories. You just don't see these kind of decorations anymore.

Thanks to all the other photos too...

MzPumpkinPie · 06/12/2019 09:51

My grandfather had these cross crossing every ceiling downstairs in his house!
I'm a strictly no tinsel person and my husband hates our tree 😂
His yearning for tinsel is hilarious

MurrayTheMonk · 06/12/2019 10:01

I love those. My parents had them all over the place and I thought they were the best things ever! I might go to the range and see if I can find some-DD's would love them! (I've banned tinsel as I dont like it but they are obsessed with it and have it in their rooms. These would be even better I think)

RollOnNextYear · 06/12/2019 10:04

Wilko sell them but not multi colored.dh wanted to get some. I wasn't so sure.

Katiepoes · 06/12/2019 10:05

Oh now I want them - my granny had so many in her living room you could barely see the ceiling, all nicely hung so she could easily walk underneath - she was 5 feet tall - but everyone else had to constantly duck. She also had a tree almost entirely decorated with her grandkid's craft efforts - I adored her house! My Mam has snooty ideas about decorations so we never had tinselly things - I am off now to find some just to wind her up Grin

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 06/12/2019 10:08

I hate the idea that Christmas is supposed to be tasteful.evilharpy I remember my mother having a similar wall frieze and it's great to see yours displayed so proudly.

I am very keen to get hold of some 1980s style soft/pastelly coloured lights, but none I've found are quite right Sad.

thenightsky · 06/12/2019 10:11

I've been trying to find the foil streamers like in the OP for a few years now. They don't seem to sell them anymore anywhere Sad

They are proper Christmas OP. Put them up.

BlueStocking007 · 06/12/2019 10:15

@evilharpy OH MY GOODNESS !
What a wonderful, magical memory seeing these. We had small 4 ft tree on the sideboard, with tinsel every colour of the sun. hanging decs meeting in the middle and this wonderful cardboard reindeer sleigh on the back wall

4DrivetPrive · 06/12/2019 10:36

Those garlands are Christmas to me, I'm still hunting for some that are red/gold/green/silver and more compact and rounded just like when I was small. I see them in Poundland etc a lot but never those four colours in one.

Has anyone ever found lights which look like the 80s/90s ones (with the plastic shades and pink as one colour) new even if LED? I was gutted when my set died!

cheesenpickles · 06/12/2019 10:38

Omg yes about the smell. I miss that smell and you don't seem to get it from modern ones.

Who remembers that horrible angel hair from the 80s? I had my cousin shove it in my pyjamas and they had to be thrown away. Spent all of Christmas Day itching. Turns out it was fibreglass Shock

HowlsMovingBungalow · 06/12/2019 10:38

I've got some of the old skool tinsel decs in charity shops before so do check in your local ones!

ItsMs · 06/12/2019 10:39

@70sWitch

Thank you! I've been looking for Xmas lights like that for several years (am a 80s child) in the shops but haven't found. Going to order those off Amazon right now, maybe some foil hanging decorations too Smile

bettytaghetti · 06/12/2019 10:42

Thank you Op and everyone who has posted pics for the wonderful trip down memory lane! It's amazing how just looking at pictures can bring back the smell! Xmas Grin

evilharpy · 06/12/2019 10:49

We had the exact Pifco lantern lights in this ebay auction. They were lovely but the bulbs were constantly blowing and ours were mostly held together with electrical tape.

I'd love another set but they go for crazy prices on ebay. However Noma has some that are rather pretty, I'm tempted. I'd need another Christmas tree to put them on though Grin

ItsMs · 06/12/2019 10:53

Just bought my Canterbury bells lights and these beauties:

northbacchus · 06/12/2019 10:55

I love all Christmas decorations but there’s some I wouldn’t personally choose to own! The foil garlands, tinsel, bead strings and any outdoor Christmas sculptures are personally not for me.

I do love to see them elsewhere though! Xmas Smile

Knittedfairies · 06/12/2019 10:59

I'm loving all these childhood memories! When we were first married (early 1970s) I bought a snowman candle for 50p in the January sale at Boots. Every Christmas he sat by the tv in a battered circle of tinsel, getting more and more battered himself - and never lit. What I didn't realise until about 5 years ago was that he symbolised Christmas for my now adult daughter. She mentioned it one summer, so I packed it up and gave it to her the following Christmas - and she was delighted! I thought no more of it until a couple of years later when I unwrapped the snowman at Christmas.... Except it wasn't the original - she'd tracked another one down in Colorado and given Christmas back.

Best 50p I ever spent.

FredaFrogspawn · 06/12/2019 11:14

My mum refused to have new fangled lights in the 60s and early 70s, insisting on real little candles in clip on holders. We only lit them on Christmas Eve and mum and dad were always hovering about to put out the small tree fires which happened every year or so. But they were magical.

FizzyIce · 06/12/2019 11:29

I used to love those Xmas Smile
But no tinsel in this house , I love the smell but I think it looks terrible .

CroissantsAtDawn · 06/12/2019 11:44

I remember those multi coloured lights with flower casing. Having to plug it in every year before putting it on the tree to see if they would work...then tightening every bulb to see if that worked....then eventually having to replace the bulbs before it finally all lit up. Fantastic

This has inspired me to do some craft with the DC this weekend. (Im even mlre rubbish than them so the results should be interesting)

tillytrotter1 · 06/12/2019 11:48

I'm on the lookout for them atm. Apart from amazon and eBay I can't find them in any shops. Love them they smell like Xmas.

Do you have one of those shops where you can buy stuff you thought they stopped making years ago? Ours is wonderful and they have lots of those. We used to buy stuff at B M bargains before they went a bit posh, for them that is!

70sWitch · 06/12/2019 11:58

@itsMs . You're welcome indeed Smile. I have 3 sets of Canterbury Belles on my big tree and they look fab.

fourquenelles · 06/12/2019 12:14

@evilharpy I have the Santa sleigh, a row of blue angels and a row of happy Santas all bought from Past Times the shop that went into administration 7 years ago (where does the time go?). I have had them for about 30 years (?) I reckon. They haven't made an appearance for about 4 years now - maybe it's time to get them out of the loft again.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2019 12:16

We had satin baubles and a little knitted angel. The cat adored them, he'd play with them but leave the rest of the tree alone!

DanaPhoenix · 06/12/2019 12:24

Not to my taste, but then again I’m not much of a fan of tinsel. But Christmas is a time for tradition and memories. I had some lovely Christmas decorations some from childhood some gifted by my DM some handmade by my boys. These were sadly lost in a move so I couldn’t find them. Mum had passed away that January and I was inconsolable.
