but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

I love them too! Covering my house in them tonight 😂

falcon5 My posher husband says 'it's like living in a 70s pub'- is inspired in its ability to be condescending, succinct and brilliant. After a few Christmas snowballs I shall using that insult over the festivities. Many thanks

I went through a "trying to not be naff at Christmas" phase and mentioned to dd that tinsel was tacky. She was horrified and gave me a lecture about making Christmas fun. I realised I was being weird and controlling a bit, so tinsel it is.

This is the stuff. Angel hair spun glass.

I found lots of the foil decorations at the range this year, DP said no, he thinks they're grotty, not grotto- so I bought some and they will be going up along with the tree at the weekend 😁😁😁 and this year I have a hefty case of tinsilitis!

HubeusRagrid · 06/12/2019 07:40

We had these as our work office decorations along with mismatched bits of tinsel and other random donated decorations until sadly a few years ago a manager decided that they were tacky, threw them all out and insisted on matching decorations. I miss the random retro decorations, it doesn't feel the same!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 06/12/2019 07:41

DH says it's like livng in a 1970s pub

Funnily enough they are similar to the decorations ive put in our little pub shed in the back garden

1979’s pub is exactly what i was going for

PortNStilton · 06/12/2019 07:42

I got loads of these decorations last year in a bid to recreate my childhood Christmases, and my house was indeed like a 1980s pub. It was great! Grin. It was the most Christmassy my house has ever felt and my kids loved it, too.

Not going all out this year - going away for Christmas and can’t be faffed - but I think tacky spangly decs are the absolute best when it comes to Christmas.

I shudder at the Scandinavian style of things made out of twigs and scraps of cloth, or the matchy matchy John Lewis ‘themed’ stuff. Give me coloured lights and foil any day.

Weloveoptimus · 06/12/2019 07:42

@longleggedgal they have them in B&m, Home Bargains and Wilko x

Chesntoots · 06/12/2019 07:43

We had the cardboard sleigh when I was little!! I thing my brother got it when dad died.

It's made me all nostalgic now

ColleysMill · 06/12/2019 07:47

@evilharpy we had one of those too!!! Id forgotten all about it!!

FreedomfromPE · 06/12/2019 07:48

All metallic ones are awful. Tinsel, baubles in glitter. But then all of Christmas is a kitsch nightmare.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 06/12/2019 07:48

Did anyone else let their DC loose with lametta on their tree?

Mine got so carried away it looks like an elf threw up on it.

MrsBobBlackadder · 06/12/2019 07:48

Another one here who had the cardboard sleigh growing up!! I used to love that thing. I wonder where our parents got it from? Woolworths probably Grin

We also used to have the foil garland thingies. They would be strung across the room, and every morning without fail at least one (sometimes all four) had fallen down, much to my dad's irritation. Back up they went, for the exact same scene to be replayed the next morning. Happy days!

iheartchristmas92 · 06/12/2019 07:49

@SalemShadow the range, poundland and Asda have them apparently x

My ceilings are too high so I can't get up there but if I could I'd be using those! We always had them when I was growing up too. Not sure where you'd even get them now.

MrMeSeeks · 06/12/2019 07:50

Love them!! Used to have them too Grin

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 06/12/2019 07:51

Oh cross post Xmas Smile

overnightangel · 06/12/2019 07:51

When I think of Xmas decorations I think of these at my Mam and Dad’s, didnrealise they were out of fashion!

JumpingOnTheBed · 06/12/2019 07:51

My das puts these up every year. When I see them in the shops it always makes me smile!

iheartchristmas92 · 06/12/2019 07:52

Here's a sleigh for sale! Are all the bidders MN-ers?!

amusedbush · 06/12/2019 07:54

@evilharpy

My granny still has that cardboard sleigh! It's older than me Grin

OP, I love those decorations. They are just so ugly and tacky and it's not Christmas until they are criss-crossed from each corner of the living room Grin

TheNoodlesIncident · 06/12/2019 07:55

I have some of these, they are German ones and more robust than the ones out of China. They are also chunkier and I swag them around the picture rail with those giant foil snowballs and snowflakes that open out. It all looks a bit... erm, garish, but it's so cheerful and Christmassy and I do love it.

My mum never put many decorations up because she said she hated the contrast of how bare it looks when you take it all down. That might be understandable but is no excuse in my opinion. As kids we were all for "the more the better"!

I love that sleigh with the reindeer, we had similar stuff (grew up in the seventies) but not that actual one, and I want it now! Nothing says Christmas more than sparkle and cheerful colour imo.
