Council worker smoking

Jasmineflair · 05/12/2019 13:18

Just witnessed a council maintenance worker smoking whilst doing something for my neighbour. He walked up to the door with a fag on and continued to smoke whilst completing the errand on their front garden! Really doesn’t give off a good look. Should they be smoking on the job?

OP posts:
messolini9 · 05/12/2019 14:32

My OP isn’t about complaining, I’m not even the one complaining.

Um ... you 'reported' to your neighbour, wound her up into wanting to make her own complaint ... then posted here to complain.

I think most pp's are responding to the ridiculousness of that, & your inadvertent snobbery in calling the guy "just a council worker", than anything smoking related.
HTH

What makes you think it's any of your business? Life is so much less stressful if you stop trying to get involved in things that are beyond your control (other people's lives for example).

Hirsutefirs · 05/12/2019 14:33

Has he been denounced yet?

messolini9 · 05/12/2019 14:35

Don’t smoke outside while working. Big sister is watching you.
👁 Blessed be those under Her eye.

breakfastpizza · 05/12/2019 14:37

YABNU to think it's unprofessional. I wouldn't involve myself though unless it was a fire hazard (flicking the butt on something flammable).

LakieLady · 05/12/2019 14:39

The council I'm under always put on letters for appointments at home that the residents are requested not to smoke during the duration of the visit.

That's because for the duration of the visit, the resident's home is the worker's workplace, and workers are entitled to a smoke-free workplace.

Some anti-smoking tossers where I work decided that management should try and make us stop smoking in our own cars between visits. Management responded that they had no power to control what we do in our own cars and, even if they did, it would be impossible to enforce.

I was quite surprised, tbh, they're very anti-smoking.

I was in Macdonalds earlier with my 3yo DD (judge away) and there was a staff member smoking outside who then went straight behind the counter and started packing a takeaway bag without washing her hands. That one made me wonder but the guy in the garden wouldn't bother me at all. I didn't complain because I'd left a knife in the fork drawer at home..

Limensoda · 05/12/2019 14:40

Oh, grow up!
There are things that could be in need of your concern. This isn't one of them.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 05/12/2019 14:41

Neighbour. Elderly neighbour. Elderly lone neighbour who can't defend herself.
Council maintenance worker. Two burly men.
You are 24? You sound much older.
Chill out - have a cigarette.
Get a hobby, or two.

MinTheMinx · 05/12/2019 14:41

Does this mean it’s okay for me to spark up whilst helping an elderly person with their shopping or taking them to their doctors appointment? (A carer) Just because they’re maintenance workers doesn’t give them a free pass to smoke on the job.

You're jealous because you can't smoke at work? Or extremely bored? How ridiculous.

1forAll74 · 05/12/2019 14:42

I am a smoker, and I took a ciggy and ashtray into my shed the other day as I was sawing some wood up for my fire, one of my cats sat on the bench in there with me. and never complained.!!

LakieLady · 05/12/2019 14:43

Other people who work outside and shouldn't smoke while working include: builders, postmen, binmen, landscape gardeners living statues and bagpipe playing buskers.

You've missed out farmers, fishermen and the men who dig up roads,@M3lon.

Those farmers are dreadful, exhaling all that smoke into the countryside and giving the sheep respiratory problems...

LunchBoxPolice · 05/12/2019 14:43

He’s getting paid to smoke? Which council is it. That’s the dream for me, that really is.

sonjadog · 05/12/2019 14:47

What are you helping defend herself against?

Yarboosucks · 05/12/2019 14:48

OP, how would you feel if the worker was sacked for this sin?

Branster · 05/12/2019 14:49

I’m surprised anyone would even notice this. How do you know he was from the council? He might be subcontracted and working for a different company.
I lost count of the number of builders and various trades I dealt with over the years and it simply isn’t something I notice. As long as they smoke outside, don’t leave any mess behind and complete the job on time and to a high standards , they can smoke the peace pipe for all I care.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/12/2019 14:51

Shock horror! Report him at once and demand his instant dismissal!

FGS, don't some people have anything better to get all piously worked up about?

breakfastpizza · 05/12/2019 14:53

The pile on in this thread is hilarious. Picturing you all smoking with one hand and furiously typing with the other.

ActualHornist · 05/12/2019 14:56

He might have been outside but he was on the clock?

Having said that, I drink coffee when I’m on the clock so I’m on the fence.

Hotseat · 05/12/2019 15:00

are you the grinch?
ffs
This.

RibenaMonsoon · 05/12/2019 15:02

The examples you give are a bit ridiculous.
A pizza delivery guy is handling food, not the same as someone who isn't. Of course that's gross. But the council worker wasn't doing that.
Doctors aren't f
Going to be able to smoke on the job owing to hospitals and doctors surgery's having a no smoking policy.
I honestly couldn't give a shit if the postman smokes on the job, as long as he doesn't put fag burns on my post what's the problem?

The council worker was outside, wasn't hurting anyone (except himself). I really don't understand the fuss. It's not like your neighbor would have had her wi Dow open in this weather.
As long as he didn't chuck the butt in her garden that's the only way I can see this affecting her.

OlaEliza · 05/12/2019 15:02

You need to get a hobby op.

And no one likes a grass.

Grin @breakfastpizza - just for you, a small slice of one's gracious home life -

EntropyRising · 05/12/2019 15:09

I hate having people smoke around my house but it's just life, innit. Please don't report him.
