Council worker smoking

Jasmineflair · 05/12/2019 13:18

Just witnessed a council maintenance worker smoking whilst doing something for my neighbour. He walked up to the door with a fag on and continued to smoke whilst completing the errand on their front garden! Really doesn’t give off a good look. Should they be smoking on the job?

Well at least I’ve contributed to one good thing here, probably the only smoking related AIBU on MN where the person smoking isn’t in the wrong or ‘killing themselves and everyone around them’. I feel honouredXmas Smile

Oh get a fucking grip. I abhor smoking but can't get worked up over something like this. Most of the council workers around here are overworked and under paid.

turkeyontheplate · 05/12/2019 14:06

Congratulations OP, you've won this year's "most passive aggressive update on a preposterously petty thread" award!

What exactly were you defending your vulnerable elderly neighbour from in this instance? Was she at risk of being blown flat by a blast of smoker's cough?

Cop yourself on. And Merry Christmas Xmas Grin

amusedbush · 05/12/2019 14:07

Fucking hell, I can't believe your neighbour complained. That's so petty and mean-spirited. The guy having a fag wasn't harming anyone.

Danni91 · 05/12/2019 14:08

Lol
Awkward
So young yet so bitter. That sucks! Focus less on others and more on yourself and your mood may improve
Fwiw - idc if my postman smokes...why would that affect anything to do with me?

Food delivery is 100% different because of confined space.

Council worker taking rubbish away from my garden ?? I couldn't spend the energy on even pretending to be fussed by it

Genuingly dont see why its an issue that 'it looks bad on the council' when you openly state theyre no good anyway??

Iamallatsea · 05/12/2019 14:08

Could be worse, he was smoking but still working. I work for a council and stop my work entirely to make a brew or go to the toilet during paid work time! Maybe I should report myself? Sorry not sorry

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/12/2019 14:09

Does it matter? He was outside, why on earth would it bother you.

And yet on other threads people complain vociferously about having to walk through cancer causing toxins clouds of cigarette smoke on the street and say it shouldn't be allowed in public.

I think it looks pretty unprofessional for someone to be smoking (or vaping) while actively working, and I'd not be impressed if the smell floated into my house - but smokers can't catch a break, can they!

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 05/12/2019 14:09

Best pay more and employ your own contractors then. Actually I've ever heard of council workers working on privately owned property, is this a thing, how do I get someone?

Aridane · 05/12/2019 14:11

Round here you can pay the council to help you with house and garden maintenance if you own your home. I presume most councils do

What??!!!!

Berrylove · 05/12/2019 14:12

Doctors and surgeons work long hard hours, quite often with no breaks. They still abide by work rules and do not smoke on the job.

Doctors and surgeons don’t have the opportunity to do so though do they? Maintenance workers are outside for basically they’re whole job, where they have all the opportunity to smoke and therefore take said opportunity.

Yes it was a bit inappropriate to not finish smoking before he went to the door but neighbour should have just asked him to stop.

kiki22 · 05/12/2019 14:14

It would be a waste of his time to stop what he is doing outdoors to stand a few feet away for a smoke.

I'm not a smoker but it wouldnt bother me unless he was indoors.

multiplemum3 · 05/12/2019 14:14

You're well on your way to being a Karen aren't you lol. Get a life for fucks sake.

user12345796 · 05/12/2019 14:15

Have you ever read Jack Black and his dog Silver? It was a comic strip in Viz.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/12/2019 14:17

I'd report it, OP. If you're lucky, he'll be sacked before Christmas.

Puritans, zealots and thought police - checking the website in case I've been directed to the Mail or the Granuid? nope.

Pukkatea · 05/12/2019 14:18

You and your neighbour sound like utterly miserable people.

Aridane · 05/12/2019 14:18

What's "being a Karen"?

LakieLady · 05/12/2019 14:23

He smoked a cigarette. He didn't take a shit on her doorstep.

Grin

Blimey, it's bad enough on here when a workman takes a shit in someone's lavatory.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 05/12/2019 14:25

I am wondering if this is an "age thing" - you are 24, so have grown up with smoking being A Bad Thing and Disgusting.
When I was at college in my teens, we had a lecturer who smoked while teaching a class, and nobody batted an eyelid.
Smoking is NOT illegal, he was outside, presumably didn't drop his fag end in the garden, and nothing and nobody was harmed (apart from his own lungs) so why the fuss?
Are you genuinely shocked by this incident, or just "posting for effect"? Genuine question.

ShadowOnTheSun · 05/12/2019 14:26

So the man was cleaning the rubbish OUTSIDE and having a fag whilst doing it? Jeez, how do you manage to get worked up about this? SO WHAT??? It was outside! Initially I thought he lit up inside and yes, that would be absolutely unacceptable (unless with owners permission), but outside..

I smoked myself for 20 years and now I vape, so I'd feel an absolute hypocrite bitching about a person smoking in the garden. If the elderly lady would be standing next to him getting billows of smoke in her face - that's bad and shouldn't happen. But that didn't happen.

I've had builders, maintenance men and removal company people on my property. They smoked and didn't even ask me (ok, one did). Couldn't care less, as long as they were doing their job properly and on time.

messolini9 · 05/12/2019 14:27

Yes I must get a life instead of looking out for elderly lone neighbour who can’t defend herself.

Defend herself against what?

I’ll just tell her to stuff it next time!

As opposed to winding her up by informing her that someone had a few illicit puffs on a fag as they were walking on her garden path?

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/12/2019 14:27

Iirc the op, who lived next to the alleyway finally admitted to smoking in the alleyway and not her garden, which is why she was royally slated.

This is weird...I could have sworn I was on MN

Of course he shouldn't be smoking while collecting up garden rubbish from someones land.

Other people who work outside and shouldn't smoke while working include: builders, postmen, binmen, landscape gardeners living statues and bagpipe playing buskers.
