And everyone else says Santa?

I say Santa but my posh DH and all his family and posh friends say Father Christmas.

Anyone else noticed this? Or AIBU?

Father Christmas every time
P. S. I'm not posh

IndieTara · 06/12/2019 17:49

Always been Father Christmas here and I'm absolutely working class. Hate Santa!

Prevegen4U · 06/12/2019 17:50

At least 45 years ago NO British person said Santa, it was always Father Christmas NEVER Santa. Santa was American/European. Britain is losing (lost) its traditions.

Cutesbabasmummy · 06/12/2019 17:50

YABVU. I'm from a working class background and have always said Father Christmas. Santa is American or from the original Santa Kaus which I think is German?

Chemenger · 06/12/2019 17:50

@ekd1 RTFT and don’t show yourself up. Santa is not American for the eleventy millionth time you idiot.

dontmentionbookclub · 06/12/2019 17:51

Father Christmas all the way here and definitely not a posh background.

OkPedro · 06/12/2019 17:51

This thread is the gift that keeps on giving

HowlsMovingBungalow · 06/12/2019 17:52

Can't believe this has been an argument on here for 10 years! I've been on MN for that long and never have seen the divide in Santa/FC before. I must have been under a rock!
Maybe MN NEEDS to delete the crap from now on in.

Ellyess · 06/12/2019 17:52

We say Sanity Clause. As in the Marx Brothers Films when they were told there was a "Sanity Clause" on a legal document which meant if the person wasn't sane they were not covered. When they said "But what about the Sanity Clause?" one of the Marx Brothers said "There aint no Sanity Clause. It's yer parents".

Otherwise we say;
Fatty Crimble
Farty Crimbo
Fatty with his sack full of crap (from a Christmas card)

FuzzyPuffling · 06/12/2019 17:55

My Scottish DH says "Father Christmas". It is why I married him.

I wonder what he saw in you?

My sense of irony.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 06/12/2019 17:56

"At least 45 years ago NO British person said Santa, it was always Father Christmas NEVER Santa. Santa was American/European. Britain is losing (lost) its traditions"

Oh fuck off you ignorant prick.

Ellyess · 06/12/2019 17:56

PineappleDanish
Have a wee lie down Pet and don't let the burgers get to you.
Hope father C brings you some nice relaxing bath things and you have a peaceful Christmas.

VK456 · 06/12/2019 17:57

I grew up in the South and he was Father Christmas to everyone.
Moved to the Midlands and everyone called him Santa!

Tildycatpuss · 06/12/2019 17:59

No i'm certainly not posh and I say Father Christmas.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 06/12/2019 17:59

I AM posh and I say Father Christmas! Hate Santa but don't mind Santa Claus!

Ellyess · 06/12/2019 18:00

Fatty Crimbo, Farty Crimble etc are adult soubriquets (Coo posh!)
Actually with the young children we are a Father Christmas family. Since I was tiny. Many many years ago.

onegiftedgal · 06/12/2019 18:00

I cringe when I see or hear 'santa' and I'm not 'posh'. It's very American, crass and tacky.

Chemenger · 06/12/2019 18:01

Britain is losing (lost) its traditions"

Like writing correct English. I think you meant “England is losing (has lost) it’s traditions”. I’m fairly sure that’s what you were trying to say in your little goady post.

derxa · 06/12/2019 18:01

No wonder Nicola wins so many seats

thefootofourstairs · 06/12/2019 18:01

YABU we’ve always said Father Christmas, definitely not posh . I thought Santa was the posher name tbh

SpiderCharlotte · 06/12/2019 18:01

At least 45 years ago NO British person said Santa, it was always Father Christmas NEVER Santa. Santa was American/European. Britain is losing (lost) its traditions

Oh ^ this is just embarrassing.

We, and everyone we knew in Scotland said and still say Santa. I am 52. My parents and grandparents also said Santa. Do you think all us Scots and Irish posters are making it up? Grin

DowntownAbby · 06/12/2019 18:02

Father Christmas all the way!

'Santa' is awful. And I'm northern and not all that posh.

Chemenger · 06/12/2019 18:03

I did not put that incorrect apostrophe there my stupid phone is punishing me for being mean to a troll.

RuffleCrow · 06/12/2019 18:03

I'm not posh but he's always been Father Christmas to me. Like the Raymond Briggs book. Santa is an americanism afaik like Kris Kringle (wtf?!)

reginafelangee · 06/12/2019 18:03

My English relatives say Father Christmas but everyone I know in Scotland says Santa.
