And everyone else says Santa?

I say Santa but my posh DH and all his family and posh friends say Father Christmas.

Anyone else noticed this? Or AIBU?

Working class

Father Christmas

BillywilliamV · 05/12/2019 12:29

We quite often say “Favver Christmas”. We’re. Not posh at all

MrsBungle · 05/12/2019 12:30

I’m Scottish and it’s Santa. My granny always said Santa too. I thought Father Christmas was an English thing.

LaurieMarlow · 05/12/2019 12:30

I see Santa as a more American thing that has become more and more the norm sadly

This site sometimes Confused

Just like Halloween, Santa is originally a Scottish/Irish thing that was brought to the US along with settlers. It's always been Santa in Scotland/Ireland, not a new thing at all.

percheron67 · 05/12/2019 12:30

Father Christmas definitely. Santa Claus is American, I think? Don't know about the "posh" part.

Windyone · 05/12/2019 12:30

Scottish here and nearly 50 and our family said Santa Claus. I don’t think it’s American. I think it’s a Scotland/England thing.

Crazybunnylady123 · 05/12/2019 12:31

Father Christmas. I’m English.

DartmoorChef · 05/12/2019 12:31

I'm from the North West, DP is from London. Both of us, all our families, and everyone we know says father Christmas. We are absolutely not posh.

KondoKonvert · 05/12/2019 12:32

What @LaurieMarlow said.

wonkylegs · 05/12/2019 12:32

I'm not posh and it's FC here

SquareAsABlock · 05/12/2019 12:33

How many times do people need to be told that Santa Claus isn't an 'Americanism'? It's Dutch, therefore European. Not that it would really matter if it did originate in America Hmm. Rudolph on the other hand is a pure American creation, yet you dont hear any British person decrying mentioning him or putting him in their decorations.

Father Christmas or Santa is just fine, though the latter is actually reflective of Saint Nikolas for anyone who cares. And most people dont.

astralweaks · 05/12/2019 12:33

Don’t people say Father Christmas to disassociate from the European style?

Whattodoabout · 05/12/2019 12:33

Santa is American.

thismeansnothing · 05/12/2019 12:34

I'm deffo not posh but always been father Christmas when I was growing up. Santa just doesn't sound right

Alconleigh · 05/12/2019 12:34

May be an age thing as well as a regional thing. I am English, and 43. Everyone said Father Christmas when I was a kid. I think of Santa as a change from the last 15 years or so, at least in England. Noted re Scotland / Ireland using it.

Cobblersandhogwash · 05/12/2019 12:34

Father Christmas here.

I thought Santa Claus was more American and became established in the UK in 1980s.

Am I wrong?

astralweaks · 05/12/2019 12:34

I prefer saying Santa because I like Europe and its style.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 05/12/2019 12:35

I'm Scottish and I thought that Father Christmas was English people thing, as the only people I know who say it are from down south.

This is my experience too. I'd have said Father Christmas was an English thing rather than a posh one.

HarrietTheFly · 05/12/2019 12:35

I think Santa is more traditionally used by Scottish and Irish people, but has spread to a certain generation of English people mainly because of American usage?

I say father Christmas and santa Claus, so does DD.

ambereeree · 05/12/2019 12:35

father Christmas just reminds me of Raymond Briggs

Electrocute1980 · 05/12/2019 12:36

I don't think Santa is an American thing - I'm Scottish and we've always said Santa here. Never heard anyone local say Father Christmas.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 05/12/2019 12:36

Can't get wound up over Santa/Father Christmas name.

Pssst He is NOT real.

SentimentalKiller · 05/12/2019 12:36

Proper working class here and it's Father Christmas

longwayoff · 05/12/2019 12:37

I just call him Dad.Xmas Smile

IndecentFeminist · 05/12/2019 12:38
