And everyone else says Santa?

I say Santa but my posh DH and all his family and posh friends say Father Christmas.

Anyone else noticed this? Or AIBU?

YABU. I say Father Christmas (and hate it when people say Santa) and I am working class all the way!

dementedma · 05/12/2019 12:22

I prefer Father Christmas - it sounds nicer. But pretty much everyone in Scotland says Santa where I live.

LaurieMarlow · 05/12/2019 12:22

Well I'm in Ireland and no one says Father Christmas here. Santa or Santy.

That may not be very helpful though.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/12/2019 12:23

I'm not posh and I say Father Christmas

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 05/12/2019 12:23

Santa is American

Finfintytint · 05/12/2019 12:23

It was Father Christmas in our house. Definitely not posh.

neonglow · 05/12/2019 12:23

‘Father Christmas’ definitely seems to be a bit more ‘middle-class’, I use either

MistyCloud · 05/12/2019 12:23

I say both. Does that mean I'm an upper class chav? 😂

Wixi · 05/12/2019 12:23

We interchange Father Christmas and Santa Claus, either works in our house. We are not particularly posh.

Doyoumind · 05/12/2019 12:24

I am sad that we have moved away from Father Christmas and towards Santa. When I was young no one ever said Santa. I don't think it's a class thing. I think it's Americanisation.

Invisimamma · 05/12/2019 12:24

I'm Scottish and I thought that Father Christmas was English people thing, as the only people I know who say it are from down south.

Somebodystired · 05/12/2019 12:24

Father Christmas here, always was on the council estate I grew up on too!

Batqueen · 05/12/2019 12:24

I see Santa as a more American thing that has become more and more the norm sadly

user137436 · 05/12/2019 12:24

I think you are right Grin. It is only my particularly posh friends who get worked up about it. I admit I much prefer Father Christmas, and Santa feels wrong, but my children prefer to say Santa. Particularly my speech delayed child who can say Santa but not Father Christmas, so I just have to roll with it.

dreamyflower · 05/12/2019 12:25

Father Christmas here. From working class background. Parents day father Christmas too. Hate the name Santa. My two year old can say father Christmas and it is the cutest thing!

Lipperfromchipper · 05/12/2019 12:25

I’m Irish and I say Santa, dh is from uk and he says Father Christmas.

SweetAsSpice · 05/12/2019 12:25

YABU. I’m common as muck and it’s Father Christmas!

troutknickers · 05/12/2019 12:26

Father Christmas all the way. I am definitely not posh.
I have always seen Santa as a bit American really although do use it on occasion

DiscoDown · 05/12/2019 12:26

It was Father Christmas for us growing up, and we're as working class as they come! Like someone says up thread, it makes me a bit sad that it's fallen out of favour.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 05/12/2019 12:26

Santa Claus is American? I say Father Christmas as a Brit.

KondoKonvert · 05/12/2019 12:26

Santa has always been a Scottish/Irish thing. I don't know anyone Scottish who calls him Father Christmas.

geojellyfish · 05/12/2019 12:27

I prefer Father Christmas and that was what we used as children, but feel I'm fighting a losing battle with DH and DC1 who say Santa. Grrrrr!

Newbie1999 · 05/12/2019 12:27

I say Father Christmas because to me, ‘Santa’ is more American. Very working class here!

pinkcardi · 05/12/2019 12:27

I believe that Santa comes from the Dutch word Sinterklass

I'm Scottish and would say Santa. My v English and quite posh DH insists on Father Christmas. Drives me potty. He's Santa and I always call him that to the DC when DH isn't listening. My own personal tiny rebellion.

drspouse · 05/12/2019 12:28

It might be age, my DPs say FC but more parents of younger children seem to say Santa, especially if young themselves.
