And everyone else says Santa?

I say Santa but my posh DH and all his family and posh friends say Father Christmas.

Anyone else noticed this? Or AIBU?

i'm in Ireland and we say Santa or Santy. If we say Father Christmas, it will probably come out like 'faadder crismiss'. 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm in my 50's, I alternate between the two. I was brought up with Father Christmas. I think that was because my GM was born 1911 and my Mother 1928 and there was still a dislike of anything German. Santa came from sinterklaas, so that wasn't used.

Which is a bit ridiculous because we still put up Christmas trees.

Santa is associated with the US but that was only because they incorporated and changed the names, the various immigrants used into one's used by everyone.

GameSetMatch · 05/12/2019 13:20

I’m not ‘posh’ I say Father Christmas because that’s what I was brought up saying. I’m not keen on americanisms.

Booksandwine80 · 05/12/2019 13:21

To me Santa Claus is an American term, I’ve always said Father Christmas and always will. Xmas Smile

Spidey66 · 05/12/2019 13:24

We said Father Christmas as a kid.

My dad was a builder.

Posh we ain't.

CornishMaid1 · 05/12/2019 13:24

We say both. Father Christmas usually but we do say Santa in an excited child-like voice!

MadeleineMaxwell · 05/12/2019 13:24

I grew up vair middle class with Father Christmas, but have lapsed a bit as an adult and we use them interchangeably. I think DS prefers Santa as it's less of a mouthful.

But it does come from various European languages, e.g. Sankt Nikolaus (Klaus) in German (whose day it is tomorrow, when he does his rounds of all the good German kids who haven't been carried off by Krampus - gotta love a good Christmas tradition!), santa for saint in Spanish. So what if it got here via America?

MindyStClaire · 05/12/2019 13:25

This site. Hmm

Santa is global, Father Christmas is English.

And for some posters - not everything new or unfamiliar is American, and not everything American is bad.

MissDew · 05/12/2019 13:26

I say Father Christmas because I always have. Nothing posh about me.

Why comment on it ? Why make a thing of it ?

rhubarbcrumbles · 05/12/2019 13:27

Yay, I'm posh! Never mind that I'm living in social housing, unemployed, overweight, reliant on benefits and bringing up my children as a single parent, I'm now posh Xmas Grin

bloodywhitecat · 05/12/2019 13:27

Father Christmas, I am late 50s, grew up in the south of England definitely not posh.

user1471449295 · 05/12/2019 13:28

Yabu with your sweeping generalisation.
I’m far from posh. Brought saying, and still saying Father Christmas. Santa is American

Whatsacill · 05/12/2019 13:28

Father Christmas here... the Americans can keep Santa!

Becuna · 05/12/2019 13:29

I'm Scottish and we say Santa or in some areas of my town they say Sunty Grin

LaurieMarlow · 05/12/2019 13:30

This site

Santa is global, Father Christmas is English.

I know, right?

You can say it and say it and say it. Nothing goes in.

notangelinajolie · 05/12/2019 13:31

For posting purposes on mumsnet I may type Santa. But in RL it's Father Christmas all the way Xmas Smile

OT slightly but another word I use a lot on here is kids but always say children in RL.

PinkCrayon · 05/12/2019 13:31

I say father christmas, I prefer it to santa. I am not posh.

Thehagonthehill · 05/12/2019 13:32

Father Christmas though I do get a pressie every year from Santa.

MindyStClaire · 05/12/2019 13:33

I think there were fewer Halloween threads this year Laurie. Maybe in a few years we'll be on the way to conquering the Santa ones too.

BeTheHokeyMan · 05/12/2019 13:33

Santy here in Ireland 🎅🎅

AnnaNimmity · 05/12/2019 13:33

I say Father Christmas because I'm not American.

Straycatstrut · 05/12/2019 13:34

OT slightly but another word I use a lot on here is kids but always say children in RL.

Ooo I do that actually. I do it for quickness but would never say my "kid" or my "kids" in real life. I usually say "my son/s"

Ftumch · 05/12/2019 13:34

Middle class Scottish family, we always said Santa, DH's working class English family say Father Christmas.

SpiderCharlotte · 05/12/2019 13:34

Santa is American

People always say this like it's an unshakeable fact. Grin

It's not American at all. Another Scot here and we always said Santa and so did everyone I know growing up.
