Title says it all really.. providing good service is given of course.

Yes of course

SandyClawsIsComingToTown · 04/12/2019 11:52

I think restaurant owners should pay their staff properly so customers don’t have to tip them on top of paying usually very over-inflated food prices. I live in London so 12.5% is usually added to the bill, which I pay even if the service is a bit rubbish. But if it’s not added I would only tip for really great service.

Spam88 · 04/12/2019 11:52

Not particularly. We do because it's custom, but I don't see why they're any more deserving of extra money than other people on minimum wage who would get sacked if they were found accepting tips.

PBo83 · 04/12/2019 11:52

Depends on the place and depends on the service.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/12/2019 11:58

Why just stop at waiting staff?

Why not anyone you buy anything from? They've all played a part in you obtaining it.

lily2403 · 04/12/2019 12:00

Not in the UK wait staff get at least minimum wage same as what someone who works in a shop....I do not tip the cashier at tesco or the person serving me at mcd

ShinyNewNameTime · 04/12/2019 12:01

Yabu. I don’t see waiting as being any more deserving of extra cash than any other minimum wage job such as auxiliary nursing, factory work, call centre work etc.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 04/12/2019 12:03

I agree that it’s down to restaurant owners to pay their staff properly. It shouldn’t fall to a customer to pay extra.

Mamabear88 · 04/12/2019 12:07

I usually tip 10% IF i've had decent service. However i've worked minimum wage jobs in the past where it wasn't expected to tip so it does seem a bit unfair that restaurant workers get tips but say shop workers don't...

andpancakesforbreakfast · 04/12/2019 12:08

No

I tip when someone makes an extra effort or to say a special thank you, I don't tip people who do their job.

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2019 12:08

YABU. Totally depends on the service received. Sometimes you don't even get a smile.

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/12/2019 12:09

It is the convention to tip.
But why tip waiting staff and not for example nursery workers who have a far more responsible job and are often on not much more than minimum wage (or less if they are apprentices)?

GingerRH · 04/12/2019 12:10

I very rarely tip unless A - were a large group or B - service went above and beyond.

I don't get tipped for performing my job. Always of the belief if they want a better wage they should get a better paid job.

Will probably get roasted for this but 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/12/2019 12:12

It depends on the service. I tip if I get good service in a restaurant I go to regularly but I don't always if I'm not planning on going back

MerryDeath · 04/12/2019 12:13

no.. why would i not then tip the nice lady stacking shelves who tells me where the UHT milk is? a nice man in mcdonalds made
my son a balloon animal the other day. didn't do it for a tip. in this country we have NMW and we've watched too many american films who have yet another of their barbaric arrangements in place that we've adopted out of immersion

MsTSwift · 04/12/2019 12:13

Yes of course.
But you will be inundated with tightwads with convoluted “reasons” as to why they don’t tip.
I am not sure they exist irl have never eaten a meal with a non tippet

MerryDeath · 04/12/2019 12:14

i do tip btw but only because it is expected of me, not because i agree with the logic.

adaline · 04/12/2019 12:15

No, I don't agree with tipping.

misspiggy19 · 04/12/2019 12:15

**No

^This. I am far from a tightarse. I just don’t believe that waiting staff are more deserving of a tip than others

thatguiltyfeeling · 04/12/2019 12:16

I worked four jobs just to pay rent a few years back. Was often leaving the house at 6, working with children all day then off to a kitchen job to work until 11 at night, home at 12, and repeat the next day. Those tips were the difference between eating or not. At my lowest I couldn't afford the petrol on a moped (so a tenner or just over week on petrol) so was hitching to work with strangers who would pick me up at the edge of town and then hoping somebody could give me a ride home.
I wasn't even front of house staff so if people weren't tipping them then I didn't get anything (all tips were spread throughout the staff, FOH got the most, then chefs, then the KPs like me.
Nowadays I tip everyone if I can.

AgeLikeWine · 04/12/2019 12:18

No.

Tipping is outdated, feudal & demeaning. It is also discriminatory. Why don’t you tip the staff at McDonalds, or the kitchen porter at the restaurant etc etc.

The minimum wage has now increased to £8.21 per hour, a level at which tipping is unnecessary.

heartsonacake · 04/12/2019 12:18

YABVU. Tipping is not necessary in the UK; everyone gets a minimum wage and they are paid to do their job.

I don’t agree with tipping and I never do it. It’s hypocritical; why tip some low wage jobs but not others?

snowybaubles · 04/12/2019 12:19

Always of the belief if they want a better wage they should get a better paid job

Ah, so simplistic.

I tip because I remember being the person on the low wage (it was before NMW) and tips really gave us a boost, both mentally and financially.

StudentMummy92 · 04/12/2019 12:23

@GingerRH not everyone is in the position to just get a better paid job.

I always share my tips with the bar staff and the kitchen for example.

As for shop keepers and the staff in KFC and McDonald's, they don't spend 2hrs+ waiting on hand and foot for customers who can be downright difficult. Difficult and then they'd soon moan if there was no one to serve them their pint of Fosters or large Pinot Grigio.

Certain minimum wage jobs, should be paid more.

StudentMummy92 · 04/12/2019 12:26

@heartsonacake not all low paid jobs are them. The girl serving you fags in Tesco takes 2 minutes, me serving your party of 10 for 2hrs whilst another table of 6 and several 2s, 3s and 4s at the same time while making sure you're having a good time is a bit more work than someone sat behind a till.

How about all bar/restaurant staff quit then you can't go out for your anniversary or whatever?
