Title says it all really.. providing good service is given of course.

If good service, absolutely. Poor service, not a chance.

SimplySteveRedux · 04/12/2019 18:59

an optional service charge is a legal thing to put on a bill for a table of over a certain amount of people so the government can see what we're being tipped

Whenever I tip I see the amount reflected on the bill, the not-so-optional service charge simply bullies patrons with many embarrassed to sufficient degree to avoid asking its removal.

I believe in tipping in a restaurant. I find it a bit weird for things like hairdressers.

Ticklemeelmo · 04/12/2019 19:04

I nearly always tip, except on rare occasions where I've had shit service

makingmammaries · 04/12/2019 19:09

Tipping is a really weird custom. Hate it. In the USA everyone seems to be chasing tips. In Switzerland I had a concierge who started to be really horrible after I failed to tip him at Christmas (had no idea it was the expectation). In France the firemen come at Christmas expecting tips. Ffs. Tipping should be outlawed and then we’d all know where we stood.

Everyone is paid at least minimum wage so why just tip waiting staff, what about you're cashier at the supermarket, your childcare provider, your bin men, it would be endless. I will tip my hairdresser but only because she fits me in at short notice due to me having 2 jobs and often working at short notice (minimum wage no tip).

Butchyrestingface · 04/12/2019 19:58

You are the most ridiculous person I've seen on MN and that's saying a lot

Your sojourn must have been of short duration. Xmas Grin

I saw worse within 2 minutes of powering up the app.

NO
tip the men who sweep streets, pick up rubbish, doctors , nurses, people who take blood samples, policemen, cinema staff, teachers.... the list is endless. Restaurant staff should get decent wages. Owners have a big markup on their foods anyway!

StudentMummy92 · 05/12/2019 08:49

@SimplySteveRedux I don't like the optional service charge either.

Owners have a big markup on their foods anyway!

They also have high overheads and lose 20% of all sales income to VAT even before their staff wages, rent, power, etc etc.

They also have high overheads and lose 20% of all sales income to VAT even before their staff wages, rent, power, etc etc.

Most business have all these costs but food is high markup

MiniMum97 · 05/12/2019 14:01

YABU I don't see why waiting staff deserve a tip anymore than any other low paid worker who provides a service.

Prjam · 05/12/2019 14:37

No tipping. Get employers to give fair decent wages. This is the only way to ensure all workers are paid their worth. Why prop up somebody else's inadequate decisions. If we all band together then no tipping will become norm and workers recognised and paid for their hard work.

KarmaStar · 05/12/2019 16:43

I tip unless the staff has been rude,or the service poor.
I do this because I remember how hard it is in the catering industry, split shifts, poor diet, long hours dealing with the public.
It's not just a quick pay at the till like in a shop where you see the staff for two minutes.in a restaurant they greet you,fix drinks, bring menus, chat about menus giving advice, serving, clearing, fetching more drinks, back with pudding menus, and so on,so you build a connection with them and then leave a tip as a thank you.

Prjam · 05/12/2019 17:12

Everone has off days. Some might have personal problems but still come to work. Some might be unwell but cannot afford day off. This can reflect in poor service as they might be under pressure. Not their fault but under circumstances. Fairer wages are the way foreward. This also eliminates being belittled if people do not leave tips because of what they have percieved or experienced.
