To find these retail practices annoying

  1. Having to pay 10% service charge added to the bill (with no pre mention of the fact) in Yo Sushi - which is expensive enough for what it is anyway. I only noticed when I read it on the receipt afterwards. I always tip waiting staff 10% anyway but I give it in cash to the actual server so I know they get it. If Yo Sushi want to pay their staff higher wages, they can do it themselves.

  2. Lush - I know some people hate it but I don’t. I like their products but I can assure you that I buy FAR LESS when some stranger is standing beside me, disturbing my rare moments of peace and making me smell stuff I’ve no interest in.
    Stop it Lush!

I hate the faux-love the sales assistants show at the changing room or when you go up to buy - to reinforce the sale in case you were in any way wavering. "oh, I love this, I tried this on too" "I love the colour of this" "this is suuuuch a versatile piece, hope I can buy it before it sells out" kind of bollocks.

Cos are experts of this, whoever does their sales training, it's very convincing but it drives me irrationally mad.

l worked one Christmas season on the checkout in an M & S Food Hall years ago. We were pushed and pushed to upsell stuff. l hated it. People don't want to be pestered. They just want to do their shopping.
My ex's daughter used to work in Clintons, and if they were heard by management serving a customer, and didn't do the upselling during the conversation, they got bollocked for it.

katseyes7 · 03/12/2019 18:40

Years ago, in my home town up north, we had a small independent chemist's shop. The owner was so pushy for sales, he used to make the poor staff pounce on people as soon as they set foot through the door. After an incident when one actually came out and asked if they could "help me" while l was outside looking in the window, l never went near the place again. lt was well known for it. And such a shame, because they sold lovely things, especially in the run up to Christmas, but l know so many people who wouldn't shop there for that very reason. l felt so sorry for the staff. lt must have been awful for them.

Why do lush do it if everyone hates it so much? Genuine question

I hadn't been in Lush for yonks but I took my child in who's 6. They did what everyone's saying here with her and spent a good amount of time with her showing her stuff. She was taking a long time to decide - normal as there's a lot there. So sales person decided to take it on her to select a few products to make it easier for her. Fully expecting at the end she'd choose one from her selection. While my child responded well to her she didn't want to choose one for this person's selection, she wanted to keep looking round choosing. I had to say to her do you want to keep looking? If I hadn't said that I think she might have chosen one from the small selection from the sales person just because of her asking her and I know she just wanted to keep looking.

I work in retail and you do know that most of these things like email details, add on sales etc are all pushed by our managers breathing down our necks and if we get caught not doing it we get a bollocking!
It’s pathetic and you can tell most customers just want to buy their stuff and leave!
My manager is so awful on the till, asks customers 1000 questions all in a high pitched false voice but apparently we “all need to watch her and copy her good customer service”!! Grin

ilovecherries · 03/12/2019 18:50

Oh, pet hates :) In Scotland you don't get any kind of bag or wrapping, paper or plastic. Which is good, we've now all been trained to take our own. But the assistants seem to have also stopped folding items and putting them in your bag. So you are left trying to hold your purse, your handbag, your shopper, possibly a child/buggy/walking aid AND wrestle whatever you've bought into your bag. All while fielding inane questions about what you are doing next. In M+S I asked the assistant to fold and put the items in my bag and she said 'oh we've stopped doing that, it's about health and safety'. WTAF???

purpleme12 · 03/12/2019 18:51

I don't mind the upselling / email receipts so much. With the upselling I just say no thanks (no big deal) and with the email I say can I have it by paper. Can't let myself get annoyed by it.

Spacerader · 03/12/2019 18:52

I’m another one who finds lush staff annoying when the pounce on you. However, I can see how it works because I know many people who end up spending more than they wanted.

Beauty counters in department stores, every counter has their own assistant who pounces. And even if they do retreat the area you are browsing in is so small that you can feel their eyes burning through you which just makes you uncomfortable.

Asking if you have a loyalty card. I pop in the co-op regularly on my way to work. And the same lady who serves me every time asks for my card knowing full well I will say no. I don’t want one thank you Shirley.

Shops with so much crammed in it’s a struggle to get around. The jd by me is small and you can barley move through all this tails scattered about.

Cashiers who talk to me to much, I’m miserable and don’t want to chat with you. I’m happy with basic pleasantries, good morning, thank you. Even the odd ‘how are you’ and a basic ‘good thank you’ in return. But I really don’t care beyond that.

Those shops in booths on the street, usually selling sky, or conservatories. And the sales person is standing outside thrusting leaflets in your hand.

E-mail receipts. I always say no because I don’t want you to have my details and I don’t want to be bombarded with emails trying to sell me things.

Ragwort · 03/12/2019 18:54

Actually my pet hate is retail assistants that don’t offer to help you, I agree that it help should be offered in a friendly, non pushy way but I don’t want to spend my money in a shop where I am ignored or not offered any help. I run a shop myself (charity retail) & we always offer to assist our customers, finding things for them, putting clothes away after they have tried them on etc. I hate struggling to hang clothes back in the ‘right place’ after trying them on, so why should my customers? We delivered something today to a customer at work who couldn’t get to our shop, she had been asking for a specific item that we were able to find for her, she was delighted.

Offering good service clearly works, we have many, many regular customers & my sales figures are high Smile.

Babybel90 · 03/12/2019 18:55

@Lulufluff I didn’t even have a handbag with me and she passed it to me in a neat little pile so I think she was actually expecting me to just carry it around in my hand 🤦‍♀️

AreWeAnywhereNear · 03/12/2019 18:55

I bought a metal storage box from Argos and the guy behind the till asked if I wanted insurance on it Confused

Errrr no, it's a metal box why on earth would I want to insure it against any damage, he didn't even have the good grace to be embarrassed.

I get the up sell and the targets but it's getting silly.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/12/2019 18:59

I still object to the (service charge) method. Surely it must be illegal?

I'm no lawyer, but thought they can't impose a service charge unless it's been stated on the menu

Has that changed, does anyone know ... ?

DianaT1969 · 03/12/2019 19:01

Keeping everyone waiting in the queue waiting while they sign someone up to a loyalty card, requiring full details that the cashier has to key in - looking at you Holland & Barrett. Is my time not of any value?

tillytrotter1 · 03/12/2019 19:02

Sale prices being described in huge letters as 'up to 50%' when in fact they mean 'up to 50% off' but don't say that. I once queried an item reduced from £40 to £30, as I tried to explain this isn't in line with their notice of sale prices 'up to 50%'. It was like trying to knit fog.

ForalltheSaints · 03/12/2019 19:06

The retail practice I dislike the most is nothing to do with the high street in most cases. Deliveries that are 'in the morning' or 'in the afternoon'. No-one should have to sit in for long periods for any delivery, a two hour slot should be standard, even if you have to book it in a few days in advance.

Autumntoowet · 03/12/2019 19:09

Sadly they are staring because shoplifting is rife and in a small ?independent shop it can break a business.
Nothing makes me hold on to my wallet more that being watched as if si was a thief.
I always end up across the road spending my money there instead.

IcedPurple · 03/12/2019 19:09

I won't hear a single word against the Boots Number 7 vouchers - they're great! Combine them with a 3 4 2 deal and you can almost make a profit on your purchase sometimes!

What does bother me is trying to force some about to expire Twix Bars on me at the check-out. Or the new 'Would you like the receipt?' Yes of course I would! Or the inevitable loyalty card palavar. No I don't have one and no I don't want one.

I should add that I don't blame the check-out assistants themselves for this - they're told to do it and are just doing their job. Doesn't make it any less annoying however.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2019 19:15

1) Body Shop (all branches) following me around like I'm a shoplifter.

YES!

They do this here, too!

You can't get a free moment to decide what you want.

The80sweregreat · 03/12/2019 19:15

If they want to push any perfume onto me I just say ' I have an allergy to perfume' which is true and usually makes people go a bit quiet. I know it's their job and they have to do it. I feel sorry about the up-selling thing especially when it's knee deep in the aisles and nobody wants to buy it! No wonder the high street is dying when the staff are given all these silly targets.

daisychain01 · 03/12/2019 19:18

The stench coming out of Lush shops makes me heave. All those nasty chemicals! Simple unperfumed every time, much better for you.

Jayaywhynot · 03/12/2019 19:23

Discretionary service charge, small print, I paid £20 service charge that I didn't see on the bill then left £20 tip in cash! Also, Boots no7 vouchers, does anyone use them?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2019 19:24

The free CRISPS

Fuck the crisps - where's my crisis? Angry

The80sweregreat · 03/12/2019 19:24

I go to an outlet / hair accessories place that does shampoo etc you can't get on the high street. They don't allow your own bags to be brought in and they watch you like a hawk ; it's quite intimidating as the minute you pick anything up to have a proper look they come up to you and just glare. They are so unfriendly it's untrue and chat away at the tills to each other while I am trying to pay.
It's cheaper than buying on line so I have to just put up with it to get some decent shampoo. They don't upsell , they are too busy trying to get people arrested I think for looking at the goods!
Lidl throw the food at me at the speed of light. I am finding shopping stressful lately!

The80sweregreat · 03/12/2019 19:26

The morning or afternoon delivery thing for big items is annoying. I sometimes think that shops really don't want customers sometimes! They seem to make it hard.

VanGoghsDog · 03/12/2019 19:29

Staff who wont leave you alone, I was followed around currys today at lunch time. I had gone in to buy a new fitbit, but after being hassled by the forth member of staff I left.

I went to Currys to buy an oven, they are upstairs, on my way up the stairs I passed an employee who vaguely said "are you OK there?" or something, while looking the other way. I mean, I was just walking up the stairs so I was more or less OK I suppose but had no idea she was talking to me. So I stopped and looked at her and said "are you talking to me?". she looked a bit surprised that I had asked but she really wasn't looking at me when she said it. Anyway, I told her I was fine - I carried on upstairs, she carried on downstairs.

Everyone was OK. Until I needed help with the ovens - then I couldn't find a sales person for love nor money and went and bought it in John Lewis!
