Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

🙂 good luck!

poltergust · 03/12/2019 10:09

Would be interesting to hear if anyone who has had a genuine rebate, received correspondence about it before the transfer?

I had an unexpected tax rebate from my first ever job, but I got a letter in advance of the money from HMRC and I'd presume this would work in the same way?

Kazzyhoward · 03/12/2019 10:10

Please contact the bank and ask for their advice. It's probably not from HMRC. It could be accidental from a client, could be a random firm who've put in the wrong account digit. Don't spend it. Don't engage with anyone who contacts you directly asking for it back as they could be scammers or money launderers. Let the bank know and let them tell you what to do to keep you safe.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 03/12/2019 10:13

Fingers crossed for you OP.

We lost our CTC when DD was one because I rang up to correct their spelling of her name (silly me). From that, it somehow went on their records that she hadn't lived with us for the first year of her life Hmm

It took nearly a year for them to correct (and only because I badgered them constantly).

Choice4567 · 03/12/2019 10:17

Waiting to hear the outcome!! 🤞🤞

Straycatstrut · 03/12/2019 10:18

(my sister got £4k by mistake from TC years ago she told them straight away but it took them 3 years to ask for it back!)

Wow she had to just hold onto it for 3 years without spending it? What kind of evil games are they playing with people?!

MotherOfLittlePeople · 03/12/2019 10:18

Ring your bank and see where it's defiantly come from and ring ctc after. Waiting to hear the outcome

ohfuckimskint · 03/12/2019 10:19

Good luck op x

thingsgetbetterf · 03/12/2019 10:21

I hope you get to keep it!

stickerqueen · 03/12/2019 10:24

the only time I got a big payment from tax credits was when my husband applied for dla for dd. I never told tax credits but dla must have
I did not know the tax credits would go up.

bluehairandheartbroken · 03/12/2019 10:26

The sooner you call them, the sooner you'll know :-)

Fingers crossed for you that it's correct. Tax credits have been doing their award reviews as I had a letter this morning - sadly mine is to say that I owe them £937 (I already knew this, I've already been paying it back).

A few years ago now though, I did same as you and checked my bank and they'd put £6000 in there. I was terrified but it was correct! I was too scared to spend it, I called them about 3 times to check before I'd touch the money but it was definitely money we were owed. Hope it's the same for you OP.

If they do state that it's yours, get them to confirm it in writing along with the fact you have offered to return it. Might safeguard you for the future!

I hope it's yours OP 🤞

whojamaflip · 03/12/2019 10:35

I had this about a month ago - £2000 paid into my account from tax credits but not showing on my gateway account.

It was apparently the underpayment from last year as I hugely overestimated dhs self employed earnings and when I sent the final figures in October they sent me the underpayment. All above board apparently but back payments don't show on the payment schedule on the gateway for some reason.

BertieBotts · 03/12/2019 10:36

Yes - call the bank first. They should be able to see if it's really a tax credit payment or identify if it might be some kind of scam.

Crackerofdoom · 03/12/2019 10:39

We got a similar overpayment from CTC but when I called they said it was correct, only to write to me a year later to tell me it was actually wrong. However, they do have to put you on a repayment plan AFAIK so I ended up paying back about 3k at 30 quid a month and no interest. Would have taken a decade to pay it back but with no interest accruing, it wasn't actually a problem.

At the time, it was a total godsend to be effectively given an interest free loan.

IVEgotthetinselBITCHES · 03/12/2019 10:43

Oh i hope they give me some extra money Grin

ign0re · 03/12/2019 10:43

Whattodo1610 · 03/12/2019 10:55

aroom .... my tax credit summary clearly states how many children I’m claiming for, how many dla I’m claiming for, how many days I’m claiming for .... it can’t be missed - it can be wrong however.

Eg - 3 children tax credits for 365 days, 2 children dla for 365 days,

They ‘overpaid’ me as dh’s Self employment earnings were more than previous year due to slightly different employment - they’re now —clawing— reclaiming it back from this years award so I get nothing! I’ve lost hundreds per month .... we’re now really struggling.
