Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 00:18

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

In the past I’ve received tax credits. They owed me a LOT. They split this large payment over 3 months. It’s hard to believe they paid this amount

Ifartglitterybaubles · 03/12/2019 15:58

Still no update?

Hmm
nononever · 03/12/2019 16:02

I have no faith whatsoever in HMRC after our latest shitstorm. Husband got an unexpected tax rebate then a few weeks later his tax code changed so he logged into his HMRC account to try and find out what the hell was going on. Apparently he now owed them money. After 2.5 hours on the phone on Saturday and 40 minutes last night trying to get to the bottom of it we ‘think’ it’s been resolved, they have assured us it has. He doesn’t owe them a penny but they ‘might’ owe him at the end of the tax year. Quite worrying when you speak to so called experts who actually have no clue.

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 16:05

Hi so sorry I haven’t even read the last few pages - update - I called them and confirmed that the one payment of £1k is correct, and another for a couple of hundred but they are going to look into rest !

Keeping EVERYTHING crossed 😆 especially as my husband who is the main earner currently has £250 in his bank 🙈

Good luck OP! Smile

AfterSomeAdvice1234 · 03/12/2019 16:11

Good luck OP! 👍

chocolateisavegetable · 03/12/2019 16:12

Well at least you got £1200 for sure - that in itself will make a big difference, especially at this time of year!

Dodie66 · 03/12/2019 16:13

Well that’s good news 🙂

DarlingNikita · 03/12/2019 16:14

Well, that's good news already!

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 16:14

Thankyou, I’m still shifting myself that somehow they will make this a huge fault on my behalf, but who knows.

And for the people moaning - I saw the amount at 12am, obviously couldn’t do a thing about it so went to sleep and had to resume my life as normal....

I haven’t had much spare time to update, and when people are rude it really doesn’t make you want to update!

For the record - I was underpaid tax credits last year and DID notice, but as I have no idea what is normal and what is not ( my daughter is only 4, Iv only claimed for two years) I haven’t ever quibbled!

Also, I am not going to spend it 😅 Barbour jacket or nay! (Might put it in a safe though Wink)

Open up another bank account and transfer it over they take fucking forever to look into stuff earn interest while its sitting there

BestOption · 03/12/2019 16:16

@TheWildOnesNeverDie

Well, that’s a start! 😊

I wouldn’t bother reading the last few pages if I were you. The giid advice is the same as previously posted and some tears are calling ‘bullshit!’ Because you haven’t updated every few seconds 🙄 I really hope it turns out to be owed to you!

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 16:20

@bestoption Thankyou

(Me too!! Amazing way to end a very tough year.)

Bloody phone. It changes twats to tears! It’s like it doesn’t even know me!

Yes. It would be a fab way to see this decade out & start a new one wouldn't it!

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 03/12/2019 16:23

so went to sleep and had to resume my life as normal.

How did you sleep with £10k in your bank account?? Grin

Hope you get to keep it OP! Everything crossed for you!

Cleanfreshbedding · 03/12/2019 16:25

Delighted for you OP. Couldn’t have happened at a better time by the sounds of it.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 03/12/2019 16:29

My son was made redundant last year so earnt a lot less than it was worked out on. They pais a lump sum of just under 3k

He's been on 4 day weeks for a few months now and they won't up the tax credits until what he's lost adds up to 2k , at which point it will probably increase and they will pay another lump sum 🙄

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 16:30

@IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory not very well, although at that point no one knew. I was dying to tell my husband when he mumbled ‘you all right?’ At about 3am 😆 but I knew it’d wake him up and I figured it was most definitely a mistake!

Hoping they send a letter or more conveniently a call to say it’s ours to keep and enjoy!

QueenOfOversharing · 03/12/2019 16:39

@LakieLady oh really? I had no idea. Thing is, you don't get told about the premiums - so how would you know?

SirVixofVixHall · 03/12/2019 16:39

I have everything crossed for you OP !

Wrybread · 03/12/2019 16:40

They took over a year to tell me I'd been overpaid....even though I told them I thought I had. Might be worth putting it in a separate account to make sure you don't spend it accidentally?

MummyJasmin · 03/12/2019 16:47

Yay!

woogal · 03/12/2019 16:50

I had a claim in for UC but husband found work so we informed everyone we needed to and they closed the UC account.

£700 appears in our joint account from UC. I phoned them and said I've been paid this but I'm not due anything as husband found and started work two weeks after we opened the claim.

They told me to keep it.

I've not spent it, it's sitting in my savings account for the day they turn around and say I wasn't entitled to it, which I've told them repeatedly.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 03/12/2019 16:51

Wow.

Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for you!

hennythe100footbird · 03/12/2019 16:51

I also think you should stick it in the premium bonds. Last month, one of the £1million winners had less than £5k worth of bonds! You can reinvest any winnings and if you need it out to give them back it will be in your bank account within 3 days!

Good luck OP xx
