Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

TheWildOnesNeverDie · 03/12/2019 00:18

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

OP posts:
BrickTop999 · 03/12/2019 14:47

ive had to call tax credits multiple times including mandatory reviews etc
I cant recall ever hanging on for more than 40 mins maximum
Me thinks this could now be classic wind up thread
For £8k Id have been on the phone at 8am on the dot

noodledoodler · 03/12/2019 14:48

ReallyLoveChickens · 03/12/2019 14:48

Hope you’re out having a nice boozy long lunch Wine

changeforprivacy · 03/12/2019 14:50

If possible could you go into bank branch and see if they can trace where the payment originated from?

It came from tax credits. Despite the OP stating it only said bank giro credit, she later dropped this....It says child and work tax credit on my bank statement

Metaplasia · 03/12/2019 14:52

Hope it's all yours OP! Good luck

KaleidoscopeEyes · 03/12/2019 14:54

They paid me a one off payment of 2100 once, about 5 years ago. I rang them straightaway and they told me I was entitled to it as they had been underpaying me the year before. I spent it. And then... you guessed it, a year later they told me they'd overpaid me by 2100 and I had to pay it back.

I don't even bother claiming it anymore, it's more hassle than it's actually worth. I don't trust a word they say tbh.

PearTreeParty · 03/12/2019 14:55

Any news OP? Really hoping it's a legitimate windfall for you.

I take your point Sunshine however I have followed a good number of threads in the past when the Op after gaining a lot of attention for their post simply cuts out and vanishes.

GunpowderGelatine · 03/12/2019 15:24

I once had a big lump sum OP - not near £10k though 🤣 - I had been on maternity leave and they'd cocked my payments up so backdated it in one payment.

kateandme · 03/12/2019 15:26

i came back for an upate.

stayathomer · 03/12/2019 15:42

Noooo!!! Where's the update?! Hope op is off spending the money. I haven't read every post in a 13 page thread for a while. Whether it is a wind up or not, great thread, so much goodwill and a lot of laughs too!

HollowTalk · 03/12/2019 15:50

The OP has packed her bag and gone on holiday already.

Derektheelf · 03/12/2019 15:53

Someone I know was paid 100% salary for 12 months of maternity leave, by accident, they never noticed or charged her. Personally I would expect it to be reclaimed, so I couldn't spend it!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/12/2019 15:53

We once got £4K put in our small business bank account from an account in the Cayman Islands. So possibly a bit dodgy. We didn’t touch it for a few years just in case, but then we just spent it. 15 or so years ago and no one ever chased it up.

Someonesayroadtrip · 03/12/2019 15:54

Come back OP!

HolyheadBound · 03/12/2019 15:56

Oh I really hope this is a Christmas windfall!

But I couldn't spend it either without knowing for definite.

MockersFactCheckMN · 03/12/2019 15:56

@TinklyLittleLaugh

Somewhere, there's an angry drug dealer with an account one digit different from yours who wants a friendly word.

changeforprivacy · 03/12/2019 15:56

but apparently the OP discovered a large sum of money just after midnight and by 11.30am when they last updated the thread, still hadn't called anyone

Nah, soap was about to call tax credit just before 11:30am - she is still on hold Grin

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/12/2019 15:56

I can only dream of such fortune, if it turns out to be fortune. If it is, enjoy the breathing space it gives you. :)
