To be annoyed by extravagant elves?

My social media is full of joyous parents sharing the antics of their elves. All fine, I even partake myself.

But why are the elves now bringing Christmas pyjamas, selection boxes, gifts, teddies and even tickets to events? Surely this is going to cause endless confusion amongst children whose elves (if they even have one) don’t???

Why can’t those gifts come from the parents?

Yes one tin of shaving foam isn’t the cause of the state of the planet . But neither is one plastic carrier bag. It’s just inconsiderate and wasteful.

Yet you’ll find thread after thread on here of ppl defending to the death their right to drive 4x4s and fly long haul Wink

dontcallmeduck · 02/12/2019 17:15

@minipie It’s not about not giving as much/ more than others. I just personally don’t like that all this stuff comes from magical beings and so less fortunate children then feel inadequate or wondering why said magical beings don’t bring them that stuff and is it because they’re bad etc.

Maybe it comes from me working with vulnerable children who are lucky if they get anything at all from Santa. I think great if you can and want to give your kids the boxes, matching pj’s, expensive gifts, absolutely do what you want but IMO it should come from the parents not the magical beings who then does nothing for others who also believe.

I’m really not trying to bash the tradition, I just think there needs to be some consideration for others who can’t afford and so why not say the elf does cheeky things if you want but leave the expensive stuff to come from you.

I agree @Itsrebekahvardysaccount it’s like people who put their Xmas tree up in November, they have to tell everyone about it. Lol

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2019 17:16

They’re in the minority

And where is your data to back that up?

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 02/12/2019 17:17

Christmas is so magical and I remember my Christmas times as a child and they were perfect, absolutely perfect and in a way it makes me a bit sad we’re constantly trying to improve on it. I don’t think I’ve worded it right.

IceniSky · 02/12/2019 17:17

We didn't do elf, but DD kept asking for one last year as all her friends had it. I told her only children who mis behaved needed one (first mistake) to keep an eye on them, so she wouldn't need one, but we could go to The Works to get one that was just a toy, for her to play with. She was perfectly happy with that.

Made it clear to DH it was just a toy and not to move it around. He bloomin moved it and made it do things. Now she expects it. Grr.

Jellybeansincognito · 02/12/2019 17:17

You’re asking for data on a fairly lighthearted thread @LaurieMarlow ?

Get yourself some wine, don’t forget to post a photo of your glass on SM though.

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 02/12/2019 17:17

@LaurieMarlow why are you taking this so personally? Confused

PineappleDanish · 02/12/2019 17:18

But why are the elves now bringing Christmas pyjamas, selection boxes, gifts, teddies and even tickets to events?

Because the parents are consumerist idiots who think ££££ shows how much their love their children.

Dreadful "tradition". Tacky, most people do it purely for the social media and so they can post #makingmemories shite.

MutedUser · 02/12/2019 17:18

For those saying how can anyone find it creepy? Your right there is nothing creepy about a soft toy coming alive at night and running around the house. My friend has hers draw on her kids during the night l actually drawing on their faces while they sleep. No nothing creepy about that at all. Then she wondered why they wouldn’t sleep in their own rooms for weeks.

dontcallmeduck · 02/12/2019 17:18

Rebecca Vardy I understand you completely.

I’m calling you on your not particularly nice assumption.

OldElPasoHadAChicken · 02/12/2019 17:19

I love what @Boots20 wrote.

I didn't realise yesterday was the first of December so I didn't get out the calendars, or the bastarding elves.

Last year and the year before, our elves did smoking, drinking, stealing, upskirting, dinosaur sodomy..... These were for the benefit of the adults, and they did less bad things for the kids.

This year I can't be fucked

dontcallmeduck · 02/12/2019 17:19

@IceniSky that’s what I said to mine too, only misbehaving children needed an elf but they were so good they didn’t need one. Had a challenging few months and we now have an elf!

OP posts:
IceniSky · 02/12/2019 17:21

She told her friends I'd said they had an elf as they were naughty!

Jellybeansincognito · 02/12/2019 17:21

@LaurieMarlow you can’t prove my assumption isn’t right, so your opinion is also an assumption.

It’s a bit pointless to take it personally.

How can you not see the majority of elf on the shelf par takers will be those who put everything on social media?

Fucck · 02/12/2019 17:21

Yabvu to be indulging in this shite full stop. It's just piffle, purely for showing off on social media.
Everyone I know who has started it has bitterly regretted it.

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2019 17:22

why are you taking this so personally

Because I have a perfectly harmless tradition that my children love and I am going to stand up for myself when ppl call it tacky, creepy, attention seeking and earth killing. It is none of those things.

Hope that helps Wink

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2019 17:22

you can’t prove my assumption isn’t right, so your opinion is also an assumption.

I didn’t start it Wink

Jellybeansincognito · 02/12/2019 17:23

Have you told Facebook it though? @LaurieMarlow

Wineislifex · 02/12/2019 17:23

Eee there’s some Scrooge’s around! If it makes your children smile who cares if other people think it’s tacky or showy!
I can’t wait to do the elf and the Christmas Eve boxes and carrot for Rudolph and sherry for Santa etc I have fab Xmas memories and I want it to be the same for my DD!

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2019 17:23

Told fb what?

Jellybeansincognito · 02/12/2019 17:23

No, but you argued it @LaurieMarlow
And have taken personal offence.

LaurieMarlow · 02/12/2019 17:24

You’ve lost me jelly

Jellybeansincognito · 02/12/2019 17:24

Your elf on the shelf partaking (what else would you think I’m asking you about? Unicorn ownership?)
