To hate home made gifts!

Christmas is approaching and no doubt one of us will end up with some sort of home made crap gift 🙄

Am I the only one who hates anything hand made? They usually look shit and just add to clutter!

I'd love to see any decent homemade gifts anyone has received, if they're brave enough to share a photo? Grin I doubt there's many that will change my opinion.

I think yabu a bit. People take time and effort to make something. Even if it's not very good, it's the thought that counts. I've made DSD a landscape playset for her horses, with diorama bits. But then again she thinks my crafting is the bees knees so I'm onto a win there, bless her. My Dsis and BIL run their own wood burning business and have given us very thoughtful gifts over the years that they have made. A wood burning of DS scan pictures,a box with x family memories and four hearts to represent me, DH, DS and DSD. We don't have much money for my parents and Sister and BIL, so I was going to do a hand print of salt dough from DS painted as an ornament, or cook with DS and DSD and wrap some biscuits in some cellophane for the kids to give them.

I made this blanket for my friend's 50th birthday earlier this year; it's single bed sized and is for her to snuggle on the sofa with. (I know that she loves it because it regularly features in her instagram posts.)

Personally, I like receiving handmade stuff (particularly gin and chocolates) however, I know that lots of people would hate to have a woolly blanket for a present so I wouldn't make one for them!

@QueenOfToast is that a Lucy Attic Hydrangea?

QueenOfToast · 30/11/2019 10:27

@funnelfanjo Yes it is - well spotted!

I've made this as a gift for someone. It's taken me months and months to do. I really like it and I hope she does too. I love homemade gifts. (I hope the photo loads properly!!).

This has been done to death now with the whole homemade gift threads Hmm

limpingparrot · 30/11/2019 10:43

You just need more talented friends and family.
My friend made chopping boards from her new worktop cut offs, that has been a brilliant present.

livingthegoodlife · 30/11/2019 10:46

I love homemade gifts. But then I've never been given a hideous glittery wineglass or other tat.

Some people are so talented!

marjoretta · 30/11/2019 10:52

The jury is out for me.

If someone made something especially for me, because they knew I liked that sort of thing, I'd be delighted. For example, I live reading so if they made me some beautiful bookmarks I'd be chuffed over the time and effort they put into thinking about what I liked and doing that for me.

On the other hand, if someone made a batch of plum jam because they have a shit load of plums in their garden and they've given plum jam to all their family and friends, then I'd be less than impressed. Personally I hate plum jam, and so clearly no time and thought has gone into my present. I don't make things but I do put a lot of time and thought into getting people presents that they'd like, so it's a tad disappointing when they can't do the same for you.

Of course, I'd accept politely, but I would be miffed at what is essentially a generic homemade present - after all, it's not made for me, making the present is all about them and getting rid of their plums / apple cider / whatever it is or spending time doing the hobby they like to do.

alittleprivacy · 30/11/2019 10:53

Didn't we do this thread last week?

Anyway, I do a reasonable amount of homemade gifting. I'm a decent knitter and crocheter but as I'm really busy at the minute the main homemade gifts I do are custom toys and action figures that the elves do for my son's Christmas stocking. I try to make him up some fantasy toys every year. Last year I made him some Imaginext Young Justice figures and a mash-up between Freddie Fazbear and Monster 500 cars. He was completely thrilled.

I like receiving homemade presents, it reminds me of the giver every time I use it/ look at it.
Stuckinarutwithyou that blanket is gorgeous!

DimplesToadfoot · 30/11/2019 10:55

@PavlovsDeafDog Thank you, every year I make myself a new hat and scarf set and my friend always takes my old ones I do knit new for her too so I thought she might like these, but these threads have made me doubt myself, I gave dolls last year and got no feedback eek! (If I remember I'll post pics)

Shoot me a PM if you do want anything :-) I dont normally knit for others but for you I'll make an exception :-)

@dreichthanksgiving. Thank you, I'm sure my friend will like my alternative gift and I can also knit a set if she wants :-)

@HollyGoLoudly1 Thank you. Fingers crossed Santa brings you something like them :-)

I've received chilli jam, limoncello, home made scarf, earrings...have consumed/ still use them all.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 30/11/2019 10:59

I love the blanket above.

I still have a couple of gorgeous home made blankets that were given to me as a baby

goldierocks · 30/11/2019 11:00

This is one of my son's favourite hand-made gifts. He received it for his 5th birthday, a few weeks before Christmas.

He's in his first year at uni now and still looks forward to me putting it up on his bedroom door, filled with chocolate of course!

I made it for him, money was tight at the time.

I have a hobby business making leather products.
The leather I use is the best money can buy, mainly Tempesti Italian leather - each gift is stamped with the recipients initials.

Retail value starts at £50, the books (Filofax style Planners) go up to £150.

I learned from YouTube videos and trial and error, so no professional training.

I'd be gutted if my friends family were sneering about it behind my back.

stuckinarutwithyou that’s beautiful, I’d be over the moon with that.

I love the idea of time and love going into a homemade gift. My brother made me one of those wooden bath plank things last year with space for candles, wine glass and a book. I love it and think of him every time I use it, he could have quite easily bought me one off the shelf but it wouldn’t mean so much to me if he had

User342109097569098 · 30/11/2019 11:10

I’ve never received a home made gift

Roussette · 30/11/2019 11:10

OP you obviously haven't had the right homemade gifts.

I prefer them a million times over crap gift sets. I wouldn't care if I had nothing bought from a shop at all.

DD made me a huge supply of home made granola last year, it was the most delicious thing. I've had chilli oil, homemade with homegrown chillis. Biscuits. Truffles. A kilner jar of pickled vegetables. Damson Gin.

What's not to like?

Roussette · 30/11/2019 11:12

Penguin your leather goods are fantastic.

I hate people sneering at home made stuff. It take a huge amount of time and effort and comes from the heart. But maybe some prefer a Baylis & Harding gift set from Superdrug...

zaffa · 30/11/2019 11:12

@DimplesToadfoot if you aren't using those for your friend, I'm happy to step in as recipient - they're gorgeous!

Velveteenfruitbowl · 30/11/2019 11:16

I’ve received and given some lovely knitted items, baked goods are also great when home made. But if it’s just a question of tat, I don’t like tat of any kind regardless of how it was made.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/11/2019 11:18

It definitely depends on the gift. A friend often makes me cross stitch and frames them etc. They're.. OK. I've got no where to put them and I have to put them up whenever she visits, moving other stuff to make space. Obviously I can't tell her I don't want them so just have to put up with them.

Good homemade gifts are great. Oftentimes it is a vanity project for the giver and not about the recipient.

Welltroddenpath · 30/11/2019 11:18

I make patchwork quilts, I think they are quite nice as I have been going to classes for five years. They cost about £100 to make and take many hours. Like the ones you see in Zara or White company but bigger.

I wouldn’t risk gifting something like that that’s cost so much time and money to be not wanted. The only time I gift them is to charity auctions. Once my bunting made £30 for charity so I know it was actually wanted.
