To hate home made gifts!

Christmas is approaching and no doubt one of us will end up with some sort of home made crap gift 🙄

Am I the only one who hates anything hand made? They usually look shit and just add to clutter!

I'd love to see any decent homemade gifts anyone has received, if they're brave enough to share a photo? Grin I doubt there's many that will change my opinion.

I cross stitch, and usually I only make cards rather than gifts, and those only for close friends or family because they takes ages. But last Christmas I made a cross stitch picture of a piece of music my brother particularly likes, which was bloody hard. Hopefully it's attached.

A friend often makes me cross stitch and frames them etc. They're.. OK. I've got no where to put them and I have to put them up whenever she visits, moving other stuff to make space. Obviously I can't tell her I don't want them so just have to put up with them

I would absolutely tell her (tactfully). Like other crafts, cross stitch takes time and money. Better to let your friend know so she can stop wasting her time and money on gifts that you don't like and resent having to put up and use that time to make something for herself!

I love receiving handmade gifts and wish someone would give me jams or chutney. I'd be thrilled with a blanket too.

I'm planning on giving someone jewellery that I've made but I'm now worried that they'll sneer!

I have a friend who gives me jewellery she has made. It's lovely.

katseyes7 · 30/11/2019 14:05

Practicalmagico lt's quite a basic pattern if you're a knitter, to be honest. There's more skill involved in making the thing up. And the pattern's on Ravelry if anyone would like to make it.

DimplesToadfoot · 30/11/2019 14:25

@FrenchSchnoodle "I'm planning on giving someone jewellery that I've made but I'm now worried that they'll sneer!"

I was in exactly the same boat as you, but I've already decided against giving the knitted set I'd made, While I was making it I knew my friend would like it, I was certain, but these 2 threads have totally made me doubt myself :-( so I'm playing safe, I'm even feeling bad about the dolls I knitted last year and I was asked to make those lol

I hate Christmas with a passion, hate it but I make an effort, give presents, put tree up etc even though I'd rather not and now I'm thinking why even bother, it would be so much easier to be the grinch I want to be and do nothing,

FrenchSchnoodle · 30/11/2019 14:31

Dimples I'm sorry that you feel the same. I also hate Christmas (for many reasons) but I appreciate that others love it and so I don't tend to moan/say anything.

I don't want to play it safe because it's the first time I've ever made so many gifts but I totally understand what you've said... and will probably bottle it!

stuckinarut

That is simply amazing & beautiful! What pattern is it?

Campervan69 · 30/11/2019 14:42

YABU I much prefer them to some pointless tat or a box set of smelly stuff.

My sil makes fudge every year and it's delicious.

Campervan69 · 30/11/2019 14:43

FrenchSchnoodle that jewellery is beautiful. I would love that as a gift.

Susiesoap7 · 30/11/2019 14:46

I have a lovely gingerbread man my gd made for me at school at least seven years ago, she was so proud when she gave it me!
I treasure it!!!

FrenchSchnoodle · 30/11/2019 14:50

Campervan thank you. That's so kind. I'm v nervous about it and so really appreciate your comment.

dreichXmas · 30/11/2019 15:01

@FrenchSchnoodle I also think the jewelry is very nice and would be delighted to receive it.

FrenchSchnoodle · 30/11/2019 15:14

stuckinarut if your friend doesn't love that, send it to me!

I love it when I come across things that I've made for people years earlier still obviously in use or on display in their homes - quilts, socks, scarves, wall hangings, pictures, tea cosies. I try to give people things they will find useful and beautiful and I try not to give people handmade things unless I know they will value them. It's not worth my time, frankly, to make things for people who don't want them.

bridgetreilly · 30/11/2019 17:11

PenguinBollard I have bought TN inserts from you!!! And they were lovely!

Subeccoo · 30/11/2019 17:17

I found out today you can make homemade baileys and my entire family are going to love their gift from me!

Mosaic123 · 30/11/2019 17:20

I make mosaics, usually a tray, as a gift. They are mostly well received. This was for someone recently. They take many hours and the materials are not cheap either.

stuckinarutwithyou · 30/11/2019 17:25

Some beautiful things on show! Well done everyone!

Thank you for the lovely comments on my blanket! @PurpleFrames it's a crocheted blanket, much simpler than I expected! @ifIwerenotanandroid the pattern is Persian Tiles Eastern Jewels by Janie Crow (I think). It took me forever but I really enjoyed it. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do now though 😂

I sometimes get requests for amigurumi toys and baby blankets too. Always up for a request!!

Roussette · 30/11/2019 17:57

Frenchsnoodle that jewellery is class, love it all !

And I'm sure Dimples your jewellery is just as great.
People pay an absolute fortune for handmade jewellery. There is a town near me that have shops with locally crafted jewellery, beautiful stuff but costs a fortune.

Well done all you clever people on here. The best I can do is pickled vegetables, people love them Grin

Roussette · 30/11/2019 17:58

Mosaic love that tray too. We need a Clever Mumsnetters shop to sell all this great stuff.

Mummyshark2019 · 30/11/2019 18:04

You sound delightful OP.

billhubbard · 30/11/2019 18:13

@stuckinarutwithyou Beautiful, well done you , I have a friend making same one and she is struggling.
I made my dh dishwasher sherbet lemon vodka as a surprise for Christmas yesterday , if he doesn't like my homemade present then I will happily drink it for him .

Onwardsagain · 30/11/2019 18:15

@goldierocks I love that advent calendar so much, I've had to take a photo. Really wanted to make DS one this year but couldn't come up with a good design. It's also lasted so well!
