BBC news output is a total disgrace

For a long time they were accused of having a left-wing bias and there was definitely some truth in that, despite their constant banging-on about their impartiality.

Now they have swung the other way and are clearly biased against Labour. I remember being amazed at a 'profile' of Corbyn soon after his election as Labour leader - it was such an obvious hatchet job I couldn't believe it had been cleared for broadcast.

They have hammered the Labour antisemitism issue endlessly but let Tory islamophobia and antisemitism go by. They have at least twice been caught out editing footage of Johnson to show him in a more positive light.

Yesterday we saw an extremely combative interview of Corbyn by the ridiculously puffed-up Andrew Neil. Apparently Labour were assured by the BBC beforehand that Johnson had also committed to an interview with Neil. Now we hear that they have not got any such commitment and the lying scumbag will almost certainly refuse to turn up.

Their journalistic standards have been fatally corrupted by their desire to suck up to whoever will be in government and make sure the money keeps rolling in for the fat salaries of the top dogs.

Could not agree more. The BBC reports on anti-semitism never once mentioned that the Chief Rabbi who criticised Corbyn has described Boris Johnson as a”lifelong friend” and that he’s had Theresa May and her husband at his house as dinner guests.

AutumnCrow · 27/11/2019 22:40

Is Kuenssberg up Johnson's arse or what? That is the question.

BastardBBC · 27/11/2019 22:45

I agree, but why did Jeremy refuse to apologise? Why?

Not the discussion at hand but, yes, i've been thinking a lot about it today. The thing is, he has apologised - repeatedly, sincerely, comprehensively. What he clearly didn't want to do was apologise as a result of a politically motivated intervention by the reprehensible Chief Rabbi as well as having to make that apology to the sneering face of Andrew Neil.

It looked preposterously stubborn but...I can understand it.

*They really don't. Where's the holding to account over racism in the Tory party? Over the suppression of the Russia document? Over the Arcuri allegations?

We have to rely on other news outlets - such as The Times (The Times!) and ITV - for that.*

And Peter Oborne too, the (former) Brexiter, Tory Daily Mail journalist, of all people, is doing a better job of calling out the lies than the BBC.

It's like the disconnect between all the clips of Johnson being confronted/shunned/heckled in the streets by normal people on the one hand, and the polls on the other. I don't get it. I don't know what to believe anymore.

ferntwist · 27/11/2019 22:52

Wrong Boudicas. Laura Kuenssberg is from a very distinguished Establishment family, including a governor of Nigeria, diplomats and High Court judges. Not lefty.

WorldEndingFire · 27/11/2019 22:52

It's tiresome and odious that they broadcast one leader without having successfully secured the other - flies in the face of any sense of impartiality. Also beggar's belief that all these former Spectator hacks have no idea how to get sold of each other.

Only one way to counter the parlous state of the media though, and that's to get out leafleting or on the doorstep with your local Labour Party before our NHS is sold off for good.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/11/2019 22:53

Why is a labour supporters defence of anti Semitism “well what about Islamophobia In the torie party” like that’s some kind of defence.

As it happens I don’t like Andrew Neil’s interview technique but I think he’s pretty much like that with everyone.

Corbyn is an awful interviewee- sure he can rally a crowd of students but he doesn’t handle journalist questions. Hence he avoids LBC like the plague...and sends “trusty” Diane Abbott instead Hmm

AhNowTed · 27/11/2019 22:54

Today alone Laura Kuenssberg has tweeted Cummings says that Corbyn would agree a Scottish referendum (yep we're now relying on Cummings to tell us what Labour would do), and another retweet of Piers bloody Morgan telling journalists they should "pummel" Corbyn.

She's deleted that one but I have pictures!

Not to mention the BBCs blatant splicing of videos to show Johnson in a positive light.

noblegiraffe · 27/11/2019 22:57

a politically motivated intervention by the reprehensible Chief Rabbi

Thing is, when you complain about the Chief Rabbi and his ‘politically motivated intervention’, you then can’t also complain that the Muslim Council’s announcement isn’t getting enough airtime.

Why is one a ‘politically motivated intervention’ and the other a timely and sincere concern about islamophobia?

Clearly both voices should be heard.

Incidentally the Hindu Council also made an announcement supporting the Chief Rabbi’s intervention and complaining about an increasing anti-Hindu sentiment in the Labour Party, and the Archbishop of Canterbury also supported the Chief Rabbi.

Cam77 · 27/11/2019 22:57

YANBU. These days the right wing papers set the tone and parameters of debate which the BBC then follows along with. Essentially, the week’s new agenda is set by the Telegraph and the Mail. It’s why the BBC report endlessly about antisemitism, rather than say Islamophobia, the Russian documents, or the battle over the NHS. Used to be that those left of centre were the BBCs biggest champions. I’d say that has taken a significant hit the last three or four years.

Actionhasmagic · 27/11/2019 22:59

I honestly cannot believe what I’m seeing from the bbc... like I knew the world was corrupt but the media is handling this very badly it’s all men helping men helping men get rich

tttigress · 27/11/2019 23:02

Problem is Jeremy Corbyn made a complete fool of himself yesterday, that is not the BBC's fault.

He seemed distracted at times, almost like he had lost concentration.

He could have handled some of the questions a lot better, even with a combative interviewer.

Cam77 · 27/11/2019 23:04

A lot of the bias the BBC shows for the conservatives is unconscious rather than purposeful. reporters with right wing sensibilities like Andrew Neil and Kuessenberg see the political centre in a different position to those with left wing sensibilities. It’s not so much that they address an issue unfairly - it’s that the very things they deem worthy of being “News” is itself a consequence of their own political prejudices. Thefore the chief rabbi (a lifelong conservative) attacking Labour is news. Thousands of Conservative party members self identifying as being against a multiracial/multi faith society isn’t news. It’s their universe, but they think it’s everyones universe. They don’t realize their own journalistic filters and prejudices and how those were what got them promoted to position of power in the first place as opposed to someone who had different filters and prejudices.. Chomsky talks of this a lot.

Cam77 · 27/11/2019 23:08

@tttigress
He didn’t. He refused to apologize because if he apologized the right wing media would have had a week of saying “See! We told you he is antisemitism.” Which he most clearly isn’t.
The interview was more an argument than an interview. The whole point is for the politician to crash and burn. If he doesn’t duck it, let’s see how Johnson fares responding to why he won’t say how many kids he has, why he is an adulterer, why he hates Muslims, why the Tory membership hate living in a multiracial society, why he called women “fickle” and homosexuals “bum boys”, why he threw away millions on that bridge, etc etc. I’m sure he’ll come out smelling of roses.

Katharinblum · 27/11/2019 23:08

Was it last year that they had a picture of corbyn wearing a flat cap like lenin and vaguely cyrillic shaped lettering above his picture on the bbc news ?
Funnily enough in the 2015 election ed milliband got absolutely hounded by the right wing press because his father who happened to be jewish but also a
renowned academic marxist 'hated britain' but that was somehow ok ? Nobody bothered about the anti semitic flavour then

Cam77 · 27/11/2019 23:10

Why he thinks it’s appropriate to use the NHS and access to reasonably priced medicine as a sacrificial lamb to beg a post deal with the US. Yep, it’s going to go down a storm. He’ll duck it, or else end up with his admirer Kuessenberg rather than Neil.

Cam77 · 27/11/2019 23:11

@Katharinblum
And the irony is look how close the Tories are to Russian blood money.

brieandcrackers · 27/11/2019 23:12

YANBU - Sturgeon and Corbyn pummelled by Andrew Neill, and the BBC tweet a video of Boris eating scones! They shouldn't have gone ahead with any of the AN interviews before they had confirmations from all major parties.

Sparklybanana · 27/11/2019 23:14

Andrew Neil is a tough interviewer, mainly because he knows the facts about what questions will be asked and few politicians know them enough to counter. He also doesn’t let them get away with not answering the question no matter how many times he has to ask.
Boris needs to turn up for his round because as Theresa May found out, ducking out when everyone else is present is more detrimental to results than having a bad interview.

scubadive · 27/11/2019 23:23

I am no Tory supporter but they do the same with Boris. Your own bias informs your opinion.

This

Tillygetsit · 27/11/2019 23:25

I am totally disgusted with the bias of the BBC. You said exactly what I've been thinking OP.

noblegiraffe · 27/11/2019 23:30

If you want to hear a Tory being ripped into by the BBC, Michael Gove got his arse handed to him by Nick Robinson on the Today show last week.

www.msn.com/en-gb/finance/other/michael-gove-had-an-absolute-nightmare-on-live-radio-after-dodging-questions-on-islamophobia-and-brexit/ar-BBWHruO

Walkingdeadfangirl · 27/11/2019 23:33

They have hammered the Labour antisemitism issue

There is a reason for that. Because Corbyn is antisemitic.

HTH

AhNowTed · 27/11/2019 23:40

"Because Corbyn is antisemitic."

I don't believe that for a minute.

He is anti-Israeli government policy regarding the Palestinians. So are many people including British and Israeli Jews.

He is no more an anti-Semite than an anti-Trump person is anti-American.

happymrsc · 27/11/2019 23:41

YANBU. I have been horrified the last couple of weeks at just how biased the media is and how much of an influence it has. I knew it went on but today has really cemented it.
