Channel Four rip-off show tonight in which HBC praises her brave gramps who did stuff in WW2.

Any mention of your Great-Grandad, HBC? He was the effing Prime Minister responsible for Gallipoli and the Somme.

Did you forget?

OP posts:
BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:26

#iklboo if she's not responsible then why make a programme about the good relative. Fuck all to do with her, isn't it.

longwayoff · 27/11/2019 20:27

Indifferent to her but love Kathy Burke. Who has a point.

raspberryk · 27/11/2019 20:27

Well I think she's quite marvellous.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:29

@BerwickLad. “ if she's not responsible then why make a programme about the good relative”

Have I understood this correctly? If I wanted to make a programme about my dad, who did loads of amazing things, I’d have to make a programme about paedo great grandpa instead?

MistyCloud · 27/11/2019 20:30

@MockersFactCheckMN

I do like her coz she is a bit bonkers and eccentric, but I guess YANBU to be miffed. It's your right to feel how you want to.

I just checked on who her great grandfather was exactly, and more than anything, I am GOBSMACKED that he was a LIBERAL Prime Minister.

From wiki

Helena Bonham-Carter's famous great grandfather was Henry Herbert Asquith (1852-1928), he served as Liberal Prime Minister of Britain from 1908 until 1916.

I didn't know Liberal had ever had a Prime Minster. Blush

misses point of thread...........

MarySidney · 27/11/2019 20:31

Winston Churchill was his usual war loving self and got his fingers badly burnt for it, ending up in the trenches out of guilt.

As First Lord of the Admiralty, Churchill had the authority to give orders to naval ships - his original plan being to force the Dardanelles by means of a naval bombardment. He didn't have the authority to send troops to Gallipoli. That was a matter for Kitchener, the Minister for War, and the Cabinet as a whole.

And yes, the Somme offensive was fought to relieve pressure on the French, who were in trouble at Verdun.

BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:31

She doesn't generally register for me because she's just soooo posh. Don't have any view either way normally but I saw the title of the thread and thought yeah that's hypocritical.

BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:33

@AutumnRose1 yeah you've misunderstood. What I've said is quite clear and I'm not going to repeat myself so if you want to carry on arguing against your version of what I've said then crack on.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:34

It’s hypocritical for someone to make a show about a decent relative because of the problems of another relative.

How much glue is doing the rounds tonight?!

ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2019 20:35

What is she supposed to do - travel back in time and tell him not to?

MarySidney · 27/11/2019 20:36

he served as Liberal Prime Minister of Britain from 1908 until 1916.

I didn't know Liberal had ever had a Prime Minster.

Have you never heard of Gladstone?

Asquith's ministry from 1908-1914 was possibly the second most important peacetime ministry of the 20th century, after Attlee's. It began the welfare state, introducing Old Age Pensions and National Insurance.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:37

“ What I've said is quite clear”

If anyone wants to clarify Berwick comments for this thick poster, I’d be grateful.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 27/11/2019 20:38

It’s part of a series on “what famous actors’ grandparents did in WWII”. It’s not an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? It’s not about WWI, and it’s presumably not directed and produced by HBC herself.

And yes, as others have pointed out, Asquith was not personally responsible for Gallipoli.

PreseaCombatir · 27/11/2019 20:38

I didn't know Liberal had ever had a Prime Minster.

Not liberal as in Lib Dem.
The liberals were basically the Labour Party of the day, up against the Tories.

Livelovebehappy · 27/11/2019 20:42

I’m tracing my ancestors currently, and two of them were locked up for thieving. I’ve been sharing this information with friends and family, but now I’m wondering whether they are judging me for my ancestors’ past demeanours?!

MistyCloud · 27/11/2019 20:43

@longwayoff OOOOH, I love Kathy Burke too! Grin

So good as Waynetta, but loved her so much in Scrubbers from about a decade before that. And who can forget her in Gimme Gimme Gimme?!

Thanks for that @PreseaCombatir Smile

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 20:48

Why should a heroic ancestor be ignored because of another one's actions?

OP you should find out about your own family history instead of raging about someone else's.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/11/2019 20:49

Because it's a 4 part series about WW2 not WW1?

Aragog · 27/11/2019 20:53

But I hate these shows which are all about promoting the sleb by pretending they are just like you and me.

So don't watch it then. It's not compulsory.
Personally I like these kind of programmes.
I'd rather watch them than a lot of other stuff on TV.

As for not mentioning her great grandfather - well that isn't the focus of this TV show is it? It's title kind of gives it away in itself. This programme is about her grandfather and his role in ww2.

Regardless, no one is responsible for their ancestors behaviour surely?! She didn't even know the man!

Drabarni · 27/11/2019 20:53

As if these celebrities aren't rich enough and couldn't afford to get someone to do it for them if they wanted Angry

When there are people in the world who have no idea who they are and if they find out they're on the other side of the world couldn't afford to go.
Lots of people have interesting people in their family trees. Not just the famous.

Aragog · 27/11/2019 20:56

But it's fine to question what you're leaving out and why you're focusing on that particular thing,

Dis you read the title of the tv programme?
As already said - the title gives it away. It tells you exactly what the focus is and why.

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 20:57

Lots of people have interesting people in their family trees. Not just the famous.

but the public is not interested by the story of a nobody and his ancestors, that's why it's around a celeb.

Aragog · 27/11/2019 21:00

Lots of people have interesting people in their family trees

But your average tv viewer is going to be more interested in watching a programme about a famous person (who they know off so have some form of connection with often) than Fred Smith who lives in Basingstoke who they've never heard of, never seen and have no form of link with at.

It's why our tv and films are generally filled with famous people and celebrities rather than random strangers.

CoolCarrie · 27/11/2019 21:06

I think this is going to be an excellent series, so don’t watch it OP, if she pisses you off so much, nobody is forcing you! Now I am off to watch it
