Channel Four rip-off show tonight in which HBC praises her brave gramps who did stuff in WW2.

Any mention of your Great-Grandad, HBC? He was the effing Prime Minister responsible for Gallipoli and the Somme.

Did you forget?

MN baffles me at times.

It's no way she is responsible for the actions of her GGF. That's bizarre.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:00

OP I don’t really watch these shows but that doesn’t relate to your original comment in any way.

I do think there’s a major issue going with sins of the fathers and politics and it’s a genuinely damaging thing to judge people by any relatives. We absolutely don’t choose them.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:03

Sorry, I mean OP explanation doesn’t relate to original comment in any way.

PreseaCombatir · 27/11/2019 20:04

I don’t really believe in original sin.

Helen takes on roles which encapsulate herself as someone who has morals

Not always, she isnt a one trick pony.
Lucy Todd wasnt very moral, neither was Belatrix Lestrange or Mdme Thenardier Wink Brilliant acting roles to get your teeth into but not a moral between them Grin

You seem to be blurring the lines between fiction and reality. I do not for a moment think HBC picks roles just to tell the world what a morally upright person she is in real life. That would be a bit weird. Its called acting. An actor can be the most horrible person in real life but can act as a fabulous person in a film if they are being paid to do it. There are plenty examples in Hollywood/Theatreland.

shadypines · 27/11/2019 20:06

🔥🔥🔥🔥

Anyone else hot?

Patroclus · 27/11/2019 20:06

Infact both Asquith and Lloyd George tried to hold back troops and stop the unimaginative offensives throughout that war. Winston Churchill was his usual war loving self and got his fingers badly burnt for it, ending up in the trenches out of guilt. Whos the nationl hero now?

Patroclus · 27/11/2019 20:07

She may take on 'social justice roles' but shes tory to the core, although seemingly suitably ashamed of it.

Clutterbugsmum · 27/11/2019 20:10

But I hate these shows which are all about promoting the sleb by pretending they are just like you and me.

I'd far rather watch something like this then cheap reality TV shows full of wanna be's and has been's.

The Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland?

GuyFawkesDay · 27/11/2019 20:13

Oh and I know lots of people in the TV/film/stage world who love her. She's apparently really good fun, not at all stuck up and game for a giggle unlike some big name actors.

So....

NearlyOutedMyself · 27/11/2019 20:14

HBC also played the Queen Mum in The Kings Speech. It's just a part!

BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:14

I do think it's a little disengeuous to make a tv programme about how heroic your family are by concentrating on the ancestor who is heroic and ignoring the one who commanded wholesale slaughter. I mean, you don't have to make any such programme at all. But if you do, given the scale of the utter fucking carnage involved, you might expect a little whataboutery.

Andypromqueen · 27/11/2019 20:16

I’m going to watch it - thanks for highlighting it op Grin. I admire anyone who dresses the way she does and totally carries it off - she’s an original.

LoobyLou1976 · 27/11/2019 20:17

and played murderer Mrs Lovett in Sweeny Todd!

ViserionTheDragon · 27/11/2019 20:17

I think she's fabulous.

PooWillyBumBum · 27/11/2019 20:19

My great grandfather made bombs for the IRA, sold off all his land property to gave money to “the cause” and let his wife and 10 kids go destitute.

Am I not allowed to speak fondly of my kind, unassuming, hard working grandfather now or must we all be accountable for every family member?

BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:19

She's posh so yeah she gets a lot of love. If she was working class looking the way she looked all shit hair and unmatched clothes she'd be being shared on Facebook.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:20

@BerwickLad “ I do think it's a little disengeuous to make a tv programme about how heroic your family are by concentrating on the ancestor who is heroic”

Why? You can make a programme about who you like.

ShagMeRiggins · 27/11/2019 20:20

I hate these shows which are all about promoting the sleb by pretending they are just like you and me.

Okay, but...everyone has ancestors. Who knows what would turn up if television producers commissioned a programme for the average Jane Doe to explore her lineage?

Maybe put together a pitch for television production companies and see how it goes. Lots of non-celebrities have explored lineage and some have come up with interesting details that inform our history of life in times that aren’t written about in biographies.

Usually these are presented in snippets of documentaries rather than one-off episodes of an entertainment programme.

But it’s always worth trying if you feel strongly about it. I’m not sure why you think they’re pretending HBC is like the rest of us; she’s not. That’s the lure for viewers, and ratings.

iklboo · 27/11/2019 20:22

Why? She, her father and grandfather are not responsible for any decisions made by her GGF.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:23

“ If she was working class looking the way she looked all shit hair and unmatched clothes she'd be being shared on Facebook.”

I dunno. I sat near her in a pub recently and she’s insanely beautiful in real life. If she wasn’t famous, she’d have had every irritating git in the pub trying to chat her up.

The Red Queen is also the first role I think of.

BerwickLad · 27/11/2019 20:24

Yeah of course you can. But it's fine to question what you're leaving out and why you're focusing on that particular thing, especially when there's another particular thing not so far removed in time that contrasts greatly. Sure, she's not responsible for the sins of her forebears. But when she rests on the laurels of others of her forebears and indeed devotes a whole telly programme to doing so even though it has fuck all to do with her it's fair play to look and contrast.

iklboo · 27/11/2019 20:24

She's posh so yeah she gets a lot of love. If she was working class looking the way she looked all shit hair and unmatched clothes she'd be being shared on Facebook.

So nobody likes Kathy Burke? A brilliant actress who dresses how she likes and doesn't care.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 20:25

I bet money Asquith will be mentioned in the first ten minutes anyway.

Think you’ve done a lot for the ratings, OP.
