Channel Four rip-off show tonight in which HBC praises her brave gramps who did stuff in WW2.

Any mention of your Great-Grandad, HBC? He was the effing Prime Minister responsible for Gallipoli and the Somme.

Did you forget?

DrDreReturns · 27/11/2019 19:41

If you go back far enough a lot of my ancestors will be wrong 'uns! What's the problem? You can't choose your parents etc

littlepaddypaws · 27/11/2019 19:43

ffs, one of my black sheep relatives was a baby farmer, three committed murder and there are others which although horrible i'm not going to apologise for long dead relatives, they did the crimes and were rightly hanged.

LauraBradshaw · 27/11/2019 19:43

Helen takes on roles which encapsulate herself as someone who has morals,When she played Lady Jane the role was perfect for her as she would not accept a forced marriage which was common at the time,it seems her grandparents are the same and can think for themselves and not be forced into doing things against their will

Patroclus · 27/11/2019 19:45

Asquith wasnt responsible for the somme or Gallipoli. Gallipoli would be Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Haig and the French responsible for the Somme (which is considered a victory)

SuckingDieselFella · 27/11/2019 19:45

The angle of the programme is that relatives WHOM WE KNEW did heroic things we don't know about.

She didn't know her great grandfather. You are being unreasonable.

Start a thread about her great grandad and his wrongdoing if you wish but it doesn't have anything to do with her.

TheoriginalLEM · 27/11/2019 19:46

Kathy Burke speaks very highly of her! www.thepoke.co.uk/2016/10/27/kathy-burke-wonderful-response-helena-bonham-carter-letters-page-time/

Willow2017 · 27/11/2019 19:46

When she played Lady Jane she refused a forced marriage and had to endure regular severe birchings on her bare bottom until she adhered to her parents wish so it shows she had her own mind, so I think she is a good person to host this programme

Err that was her playing a character in a film [losely based on history] not her actual lifestory! WTF has that to do with her being on a tv programme about her ancestors?

Op there wouldnt be much point in her being on the programme if it was all about her GGF would there? He is well known and its easy enough to research him if anyone wanted to. The whole point is to find out things you didnt know about your relatives I think you are missing the bleeding obvious here.

AutumnRose1 · 27/11/2019 19:47

Patroclus, thanks, I was about to look up what I thought was a massive error in my (scant) knowledge of Asquith.

steff13 · 27/11/2019 19:48

When she played Lady Jane she refused a forced marriage and had to endure regular severe birchings on her bare bottom until she adhered to her parents wish so it shows she had her own mind

I'm not saying HBC is not a good person, but I don't understand this comment?

Bluerussian · 27/11/2019 19:48

That's a rather unpleasant post. Why be resentful because Helena Bonham Carter is proud of her grandfather and didn't even know her great grandfather? You seem so very cross and I don't understand that.

HotCrossPun1 · 27/11/2019 19:49

YABVU! She's an amazing actress and I love her. Leave the poor woman alone, she's not responsible for those who came before her

Yes, this ^ x100

TheoriginalLEM · 27/11/2019 19:50

I have a resentment of HBC - she used to be my girl crush, until belatrix and my DP declaring he fancied her!! The bitch Grin

Hepsibar · 27/11/2019 19:51

I think Helena B-C is a fabulous actress. I feel she comes across as v interesting and reasonably natural in interviews.

She cannot help her relatives anymore than any of us can.

Andypromqueen · 27/11/2019 19:53

I believe she lived in a house next door to Tim burton for the entirety of their marriage. For that alone I love her!

For her affair with Kenneth Branagh not so much (poor Emma Thompson!)

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 27/11/2019 19:54

Got no feeling on her either way but she is a great actress , it has to be said .

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/11/2019 19:54

Jeez, I only know scant information about one set of my GGPs (bizarrely, the non British ones) the other three sets I have no idea.
If they all turn out to be baby murderers or otherwisely dodgy I’ll neither be shouting about it nor apologising for it. A “gosh” and a shrug would cover it.
Nothing whatsoever to do with me.

Similarly HBC holds no responsibility for her GGF, nor does she owe anyone an apology for him.

donquixotedelamancha · 27/11/2019 19:55

He was the effing Prime Minister responsible for Gallipoli and the Somme.

I think military officers tended to formulate strategy and command troops back then.

The last time the Prime Minister personally commanded the army was probably Waterloo :-)

user1471510720 · 27/11/2019 19:56

This has to be the most silliest post by an OP, Firstly she was wrong about Gallipoli and the Somme, it’s probably unwise to post something you clearly have no knowledge about and perhaps you should donate a weeks wages to ‘ help for hero’s’ . And secondly, its called history and it saddens me that many people died for people like you to post trash.

DeathStare · 27/11/2019 19:56

Helen takes on roles which encapsulate herself as someone who has morals

Well that's debatable! She also played Bellatrix le Strange in the Harry Potter films, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, and Mme Thenardier in Les Mis.

Not that any of that matters. She's an actor. Those are roles she is playing

iklboo · 27/11/2019 19:56

This is taking 'sins of the fathers' just a tad too far.

MockersFactCheckMN · 27/11/2019 19:57

OK, Just me.

But I hate these shows which are all about promoting the sleb by pretending they are just like you and me.

OP posts:
egontoste · 27/11/2019 19:58

Asquith didn't start WW1, as far as I recall it was someone else who was responsible for assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Her great-grandfather just so happened to be Prime Minister at the time.

acatcalledjohn · 27/11/2019 19:58

By that reasoning, OP, all Germans are responsible for what the Nazis did in WW2.

YABVVVVVU.

All of us with direct ancestors involved in slavery are racist, elitist cunts.

What a twattish attitude.

Keepmewarm · 27/11/2019 19:58

I love her. I want to be her.
She is not her ancestors.
@MockersFactCheckMN do you feel responsible for your ancestors actions?

donquixotedelamancha · 27/11/2019 19:59
