To Not Use Self Sevice Tills

Because:

  1. I'm not employed by the supermarket as a cashier and don't want to work for nothing

  2. They will eventually put cashiers out of work.

Clearly not because that's why there's the option to serve yourself or go to a cashier.

SillyUnMurphy · 27/11/2019 10:41

I hate them with a passion. Without fail, every time I use one something goes wrong and I'm left there for ages.

I also agree with you that I'm not paid to check out my own shopping and it's lovely to have dedicated cashiers to do that.

TiceCream · 27/11/2019 10:42

I like self service tills. It means I can do my shop with zero social interaction.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 27/11/2019 10:43

I try not to use self service tills but sometimes especially if you shop early in the morning it is the only option available.

I popped into Sainsbury’s this morning about 7.30 and the only member of staff I saw in the whole store was by the self service checkout. No tills we’re open at all.

LaMarschallin · 27/11/2019 10:44

Reason 1) YABU. I'm happy to do a bit of swiping if it's quicker and more convenient for me. I can go at my own pace and swipe and pack heavier items first. And not have to make laboured conversation with someone who's equally bored by the small talk but has been told to ask about the weather or compliment a customer's child/food choice/whatever.

Reason 2) YANBU.

NannyR · 27/11/2019 10:46

I actually like using them, it makes the checkout process quicker, they rarely go wrong (in my experience) and if they do they are usually sorted out quickly.

Nottoomuchgarlic · 27/11/2019 10:46

Did you see the Sainsbury’s documentary which featured their Holborn store going till-less altogether?
You just sign up for the App apparently and scan & go.

Nottoomuchgarlic · 27/11/2019 10:48

It looked awful. Even more zombie-like.

adaline · 27/11/2019 10:49

I went to Tesco this morning at about 8.45am and they only had one till open and there were 3-4 people in the queue. I put a £60 shop through the self-service and when I left, the same people were still queueing at the till Hmm

I'm all for being served by actual people but I'd rather not spend time stood in a queue if it's avoidable!

tillytrotter1 · 27/11/2019 10:49

In our local Tesco I've seen one assistant doing the scanning and another the packing on the self-service tills for people who can't use them.

OhMsBeliever · 27/11/2019 10:51

I hate people.

So I love self service tills. Until they go wrong and then I'm forced to talk to people. They do seem to go wrong far less these days though.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2019 10:52

It’s quicker. Plus a lot of supermarkets don’t employ staff just to be on tills. They do lots of other stuff as well. So the putting staff out of work isn’t necessarily true. You want some stock on the shelves right?
Scan as you shop is even better.
But if you want to queue up for a human being that’s fine.

AntennaReborn · 27/11/2019 10:52

I use them when I just have a few items and I'm in a hurry.

Few things infuriate me more than other customers ahead of me in the queue telling the cashier their life story, then acting surprised when it's time to pay, and slowly patting each of their pockets in turn until they eventually locate their chosen method of payment, points card, etc. then KEEP TELLING THEIR POINTLESS STORIES after they are done paying and stopping me from moving forward with my trolley. I know it's probably a disproportionate reaction but it drives me bonkers! Grin

Insideimsprinting · 27/11/2019 10:53

I like them if I'm just buying one or two items and I have loose change. I do agree however the utter irritation if your buying more than that and it starts with the 'unexpected item' crap or when it keeps spitting out notes as they arnt completely flat.

Sometimes I have enjoyed the convenience other times it would have been quicker to wait.

Mrsjayy · 27/11/2019 10:53

I hate them I get flustered if they don't work and we won't talk about bag In Bagging area Angry. Staff in shops know what they are doing. Let them do their job. I went into Sainsbury's last week you need to walk past lots of self service to get to a person operated till!

ISawyouinTescoyesterday · 27/11/2019 10:56

I like self service tills because I have anxiety and I hate waiting or having a long line of people behind me puts my blood pressure up! My dh however refuses to use them.

Mrsjayy · 27/11/2019 10:56

Tbh I only use them if my DC is there they have worked in supermarkets and whizz through the shopping

SunshineAngel · 27/11/2019 10:58

I'm the most anti-social individual on the planet, I think, so self-scan tills are my absolute dream situation.

Pinkblueberry · 27/11/2019 11:01

Yes scanning an item or two yourself is very draining...

SerenDippitty · 27/11/2019 11:01

I use them when I just have a few items and I'm in a hurry.

Me too.

mumwon · 27/11/2019 11:02

& banks - went into B(clue)IG bank on Saturday - on line it says: open till 2 - uh the counter shuts at one & you have to wait around to see someone when you need to check an issue (which couldn't be done on line). More bank counters/banks are shutting everyday & causing problems with vulnerable people or people who need help or proof of payment etc - similar issue.

ELM8 · 27/11/2019 11:03

I hate small talk so I love that they remove that!

bingoitsadingo · 27/11/2019 11:04

Personally I don't mind scanning stuff myself rather than standing there twiddling my thumbs. If it makes prices more competitive I'm all for it.

I also don't think we should preserve pointless jobs for the sake of it. I'd rather free people up to do something more productive.

scaryteacher · 27/11/2019 11:07

I like scanning with a device and then paying at a till at the end...as opposed to self service checkouts. Even better in Belgium are the supermarkets where the cashier packs for you, so bags in one trolley, shopping on the other, and away they go. They are focussed, so don't talk at you, the process is quick, and they pack beautifully.

lotsofoysters · 27/11/2019 11:07

Do you still insist that a shop assistant goes around and collects all of your items for you, too, like in the good old days? Or are you happy to do that "job" for no pay?
